ITV commentary legend slams Rio Ferdinand over 'MUTV' punditry during Man Utd matches
Broadcasting legend Clyde Tyldesley has taken aim at Rio Ferdinand for his commentary during Manchester United's dramatic Europa League win over Lyon. The former ITV favourite was left unimpressed by the former defender's reaction as the Red Devils booked their spot in the semi-finals of the competition thanks to a late goal in extra-time.
United looked set to crash out against Lyon but goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire saw Ruben Amorim's side win in dramatic fashion. It was Maguire's decisive header that sparked jubilant scenes at Old Trafford - and a wild reaction in the commentary booth.
Ferdinand could be heard cheering for both Mainoo and Maguire's efforts and TNT Sports released a 'commentator cam' that showed him celebrating with his fellow pundit Robbie Savage - an ex Manchester United academy graduate - and Darren Fletcher. It was Fletcher who could be seen attempting to rein in his colleagues' excitement.
Tyldesley took a dig at TNT Sports' coverage by accusing them of straying into the realms of United's own channel, MUTV. He did, however, have praise for Fletcher.
Describing the final moments of United's win in his blog, Tyldesley wrote: "Over on TNT Sport, lead commentator Darren Fletcher was playing gooseberry to two former United players that were just loving the comeback. We know this because Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Savage could not only be heard but also seen on 'CommCam'.
"So, just in case we were wondering if Rio's voice had temporarily lost the frequency of the commentator's traditional neutrality, we could watch his fist punching the air over and over in delight. I got the impression that he maybe knew the hidden camera was there. Could be wrong.
"Fletch had been savvy enough to take a deep breath in the wake of United's equaliser – my wonderful mentor Reg Gutteridge used to call it "thinking time" – before delivering the catchy line 'Kobbie Mainoo is the coolest kid in Old Trafford and Manchester United are level'. Either side of him, Rio and Robbie were unashamedly losing their collective cool to welcome us to MUTV."
Tyldesley went on to lament: "The day of the commentator fan – Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher et al – is here but does it work?"
It's not the first time Ferdinand has prompted Tyldesley's ire either. The 70-year-old was critical of the TNT pundit's reaction to James Tarkowski's Everton equaliser against Liverpool.
"Having the judgment and knowledge to read a game doesn't necessarily give an ex-player the ability to read it out loud to an audience of millions," Tyldesley said. "They are two separate professions with their own techniques and thought processes.
"If you are coming from football into broadcasting, you need to be schooled and coached in the methods and disciplines of communication. Your words should count. 'Oh my God. Oh my God' is not quite enough."

Manchester United agree terms with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo
Manchester United have finally reached an agreement with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo, the PA news agency understands. Six weeks after seeing their first offer rebuffed, Ruben Amorim's Red Devils have agreed terms with the Bees to sign the 25-year-old forward. United are set to pay £65million for Mbeumo, with Brentford reportedly in line for a further £6m in potential add-ons. The Cameroon international is in line to become the Premier League club's second summer signing after Brazil international Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolves in a £62.5million deal last month.

Manager Ruben Amorim has been eyeing a replacement for Andre Onana even before the Cameroonian stopper suffered an hamstring injury in pre-season. And the Red Devils have now opened talks with Antwerp about a £17million deal for Lammens, according to journalist Ben Jacobs. United were first linked with Lammens, 23, in January, with scouts reportedly sent to watch him play. Widely considered as one of the best up-and-coming goalkeepers in Europe, Lammens enjoyed a breakthrough first year as Antwerp's No.1 last term. After the chaos of last season, things were meant to be better from the off for Amorim, but United seemingly struggled to reset their squad in the summer window. But the 40-year-old gaffer's fortunes are set to change after the club finally agreed a £65million deal with Brentford for winger Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo, and potentially Lammens, will link up with fellow new signings Matheus Cunha and full-back Diego Leon. United take on local rivals Leeds at the Friends Arena in Sweden on Saturday at 2pm. The five-player 'Bomb Squad' of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrrell Malacia remain isolated from the tour.

Man Utd to sign Bryan Mbeumo after finally reaching Brentford transfer agreement
Bryan Mbeumo's £71m move to Manchester United has moved a step closer after Brentford agreed to sanction the sale of their top goalscorer. United had failed with two earlier bids for Mbeumo, 25, only for a third offer to be deemed acceptable by Bees chiefs. That will see Brentford receive £65m guaranteed, paid across four instalments, with £6m more to come in add-ons. Mbeumo's representatives had already agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford hierarchy, paving the way for a move to be completed in the next couple of days pending the completion of a medical. The Cameroon international had also had interest from Tottenham Hotspur, a move that would have seen him follow the path taken by head coach Thomas Frank last month. But he has always preferred a move to United, despite the club not being in Europe this season and Spurs returning to the Champions League, and made his intention clear to all parties while continuing to train as normal at the start of pre-season. United's initial bids of £45m and £55m upfront were swiftly rejected by Brentford, whose view was that they should hold out for more than what United paid Wolves for the Brazilian Matheus Cunha at the beginning of the transfer window. United have also signed young full back Diego Leon from the Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno. Mbeumo scored 20 goals and added eight assists having played in every league game for Brentford last season. He joined the club in 2019 and was a vital part of their promotion from the Championship. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
