Florida football QB DJ Lagway shuts down injury rumors during 2025 SEC media days
Lagway was limited during spring practice with a shoulder injury, but he told reporters that it is no longer an issue heading into the 2025 season.
"Just to say, I don't have a prosthetic arm," Lagway joked. "Just letting y'all know that."
Lagway, a former five-star recruit out of high school, was recovering from a shoulder issue that kept him from throwing during the spring. Despite the missed reps, the Gators' quarterback said he's confident in how far he's come.
"I'm itching and crawling to get back on the field with the guys," Lagway said. "But I'm feeling great. Training has been amazing, I've been working. I'm actually getting better at doing that, just trying to get back to throwing the ball."
Lagway added that the recovery process has given him time to focus on refining the mental and technical side of his game.
"I've been working on mechanics that's going to help my accuracy this year, help my decision-making," he said. "It's been great. I'm just excited to get out there with the guys."
The injury caused concern throughout Gator Nation this offseason, as Florida's success this season plays a large part on Lagway's health.
Head coach Billy Napier didn't dive into the details of Lagway's injury status during his SEC media days appearance, but he did share a positive update.
According to Napier, Lagway took part in a throwing session earlier before the team's trip to Atlanta, a promising sign as fall camp approaches.
Napier added that the staff expects the sophomore quarterback to be fully healthy and ready to go when preseason practices begin.
"We don't have anyone that we anticipate not being available at the beginning of training camp," Napier said when asked about the health surrounding the team.
While specifics remain scarce with Lagway's status, both he and Napier expressed confidence in his recovery trajectory.
When asked whether he underwent a procedure to address lingering issues, Lagway acknowledged minor setbacks but kept the details minimal.
"Yeah, you know, a lot of players have (nooks) and crannies, little things that was lingering during the season," Lagway said. "Outside of that, I'm just ready to get out there."
All eyes will be on Lagway as he returns to full strength with a chance to become one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC this season.

49ers Training Camp: Could San Francisco start three rookies in their front seven in 2025?
The San Francisco 49ers are motoring through their 2025 training camp at the SAP Performance Facility next to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and that includes their first padded practice session of the year on Monday. With pads on, coaches and players can get a much better idea of how they'll play in games than jerseys, pants and shells. That is especially true for the defense, as they can finally use some of that physicality when making tackles or taking on blockers. Through five days of camp, the 49ers have had a few players stand out, but the three defensive linemen that they took in the first four rounds of the 2025 NFL draft - Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins and CJ West - have stood out. If they're all practicing like they have been, and it continues into the preseason games, they may all earn starting roles, or at least key rotational roles, when the regular season comes along. Williams, 21, was San Francisco's first selection this year (No. 11 overall) after a two-time All-SEC career at Georgia that included a national championship. He should be the team's starting edge rusher opposite Nick Bosa, with Bryce Huff, who the 49ers acquired in a trade this offseason, likely playing a fair amount as well. Collins, 23, played at Texas from 2020-24, earning All-SEC and All-American honors last year before the 49ers took him in the second round (No. 43 overall). At 6-foot-6 and 332 pounds, Collins is a physical presence, who entered training camp with the expectation that he'll push out one of Jordan Elliott or Kevin Givens in the interior defensive line. West, 23, spent four seasons at Kent State (2020-23), where he earned All-MAC honors once, before transferring to Indiana for his final year in college. San Francisco took him in the fourth round (No. 113 overall) this year, and while many penciled him in as a backup in 2025, his performance on Monday have some questioning that decision. Even defensive coordinator Robert Saleh had positive things to say about the former Hoosier after his dominance. 'He's like a little fire hydrant, right? He's powerful. He's got heavy hands,' Saleh said during his media availability after the session. 'He's going to be fine. He's like a lot of rookies, there are so many things that they're learning, especially on the interior of the D-Line where it's a game within a game. You know, the first thing they learn is pocket push and then they learn how to capture an edge and rush from there. I wasn't there. I heard he did a really nice job over there, but I'm excited to get to the tape to see it.' With Williams all but guaranteed a starting role in Week 1, Collins and West are the questions of the trio. They'll have to do enough to unseat Elliott, who played 41.3% of defensive snaps last year and is entering the final year of a two-year, $7 million deal, and Givens, who played 17.3% of the snaps in 2024 and re-signed with San Francisco on a one-year, $2.05 million deal this offseason. It's going to take a lot of work from the rookies, but if they keep this up, all three could be on the field for the first defensive snaps of the season against the Seattle Seahawks on Sep. 7. And, if that's the case, not only will it speak to the front office's impressive work, but it will also set them up with a strong base to build on for years to come. However, it's still a little early for that. Let's let them get a second padded practice in before we put them down on the depth chart in permanent marker. Braves Blockbuster? Atlanta Ace Could Be Valuable Trade Deadline Piece
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Atlanta Braves should be very aggressive sellers at the trade deadline. With a few days to go, Atlanta could be looking to cut ties with more than a handful of its best players. FanSided's Christopher Kline recently suggested the Braves could cut ties with ace Chris Sale despite a lack of hard evidence that Atlanta is looking to do so. ATLANTA, GA - JULY 15: Jacob deGrom #48 of the Texas Rangers and Chris Sale #51 of the Atlanta Braves talk before the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on July 15, 2025 in Atlanta,... ATLANTA, GA - JULY 15: Jacob deGrom #48 of the Texas Rangers and Chris Sale #51 of the Atlanta Braves talk before the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on July 15, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. More Matthew Grimes Jr./"All the reporting around Chris Sale suggests that Atlanta will pick up his $18 million club option for next season and run it back. That is reasonable. Sale won the NL Cy Young award in 2024 and he was a frontrunner yet again this season before an unfortunate rib injury," Kline wrote. "And yet, Sale is also 36 years old, with a long and troubling history of injuries far worse than a broken rib. It is more than fair to wonder if Atlanta is best served by selling high. "Sale, even hurt and even at his advanced age, would return a huge haul for the Braves. Contenders would line up around the block to add arguably the best left-handed arm in the National League. Sale's résumé has few equals in MLB and he's still throwing absolute gas in his 'old' age. He should be back for the playoffs in October, so this injury (in theory) is only a temporary setback." Let's be clear. The Braves haven't shown any indication that they're looking to trade Sale, but it's reasonable to speculate. Atlanta has all the pieces to compete next year if the right moves are made, but it would be very easy for their front office to be blown away by an offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox. These teams have solid farm systems and a huge need for an ace. At the end of the day, it's unlikely, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. Alabama wide receiver named to preseason watch list for top college football award
Per an announcement Monday afternoon, Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Ryan Williams has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Maxwell Award. The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football, and is an honor that the Crimson Tide have received five times before. Those winners were A.J. McCarron (2013), Derrick Henry (2015), Tua Tagovailoa (2018), DeVonta Smith (2020), and Bryce Young (2021). A sophomore, Williams enters the 2025 season coming off a stellar freshman campaign in which he received honors such as First Team All-SEC and Freshman All-America. Across 13 games, Williams hauled in 48 receptions for 865 yards and eight touchdowns, while also rushing for 48 yards and two more scores. Williams also played a role on special teams, returning 12 punts for 120 yards, as well as two kicks for 14 yards.
