VCSC invites students to attend annual Athletics Leadership Conference
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Friday, the Vigo County School Corporation held its annual Athletics Leadership Conference.
Nearly 100 middle and high school students from Vigo County schools attended the event. They heard from the Indiana High School Athletics Association Commissioner, about how to succeed on the court, in the field, and in life. This conference helps give students the tools they will need, to lead their peers.
Updates on the VCSC 2025 budget
'We have a bunch of different speakers come in and talk about leadership and just about what the IHSAA is about and how athletics are run and how you can change your team atmosphere and impact the community through your actions.' said Kylie Lloyd, President of the Student Athletic Council at Terre Haute North Vigo High School.
'Not only having these speakers come in help us, they are sort of showing us how to have good sportsmanship and how to be a better leader within our community.' said Emma Martin, Vice President Of The Student Athletic Board At Terre Haute North Vigo High School)
School officials say this is just one of the many ways they are showing students a path to leadership.

Special Olympics Indiana's Summer Games begin in Terre Haute
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Thousands of athletes, volunteers, and supporters from around the state of Indiana are in Terre Haute this weekend for Special Olympics Indiana's biggest event of the year. Athlete Hunter Canada said the feeling is amazing. 'It's pretty entertaining and fun just being out there with all the other people competing', Canada said. 'I'm wishing everybody good luck.' Athletes compete in a number of different events like swimming on the campus of Rose-Hulman and volleyball, track and field, and pickleball at Indiana State. One duo from Jackson County, AJ Engel and Hunter Canada, claimed the top two spots in their 800-meter race. 'I was expecting him to pass me at the end, but we were expecting to get first and second', Canada said. 'It feels good to take first and second', Engel said. 'The runners were good competition.' Some athletes have been competing for their entire lives. 'I've done this for as long as I remember', Engel said. 'I've run track in middle school and high school. I just really feel like Special Olympics is good.' Other, like Madison Carter, have chosen the volunteer route. 'I've actually been doing this for eight years now', Carter said. 'I started out in high school doing Best Buddies, unified track, peer tutoring, you name it, I've probably done it. Then I've been in volleyball since I was nine years old, so I reached out to somebody here at Special Olympics. I started as a volunteer, then became a part of the management team, and now I'm the manager of it all.' All involved agree the best part about the event is coming together. 'The camaraderie and building those relationships throughout the entire experience here is like no other', Carter said. 'I've seen people since I started eight years ago, all the way to new people this year. I think those relationships are like no other.' Lincoln Park Speedway gearing up for USAC race
PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — It's Indiana USAC week, and Lincoln Park Speedway is gearing up for tomorrow. Gates open in the pits at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. Track Promoter, Jen Estes, said they will have great concessions, a beer garden and an evening full of action-packed fun. 'If you talk to anybody about dirt track racing, they're going to mention Lincoln Park Speedway. It's been a staple in the area since the '60s, so everybody knows, everybody's been here. If you ask drivers and racers, they're going to tell you this is probably one of their favorite tracks to race at,' said Estes. She said Lincoln Park Speedway has racing from April until September. Northview student qualifies for Rowing Youth National Championship
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Terre Haute resident and Northview High School student has qualified for the 2025 US Rowing Youth National Championship. Will Kinne has been a dedicated member of the Wabash Valley Crew since he was in the sixth grade and is the first Wabash Valley Crew rower to qualify for the championships. 'I'm very excited to make Nationals, as it's the first time in club history,' explained Kinne. 'Being around so many members of the rowing community on a national scale is exciting. I'm grateful to my coaches, parents and girlfriend who've pushed me to get better.'
