The GCA said that it had been monitoring Amazon's actions after warning the company last year to fix its practices. After reviewing more evidence, the regulator decided to launch a formal investigation focused specifically on Amazon's compliance with the payment timing rule. The GCA is responsible for making sure large grocery retailers treat their suppliers fairly, and this move suggests Amazon hasn't done enough to address previous concerns.
While Amazon's grocery operations are smaller in the UK than in other markets, they are still significant. Estimates suggest that Amazon has between 1.6% and 3% of the UK grocery market, compared to Tesco's 29%. Amazon doesn't break out UK grocery sales in its earnings reports, but the Competition and Markets Authority requires companies with over £1 billion in UK grocery turnover to follow the Groceries Code, which implies that Amazon exceeds that threshold. Following news of the investigation, Amazon's stock opened lower on Friday and continued to trade in the red for a third straight session.
What Is the Price Target for AMZN Stock?
Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on Amazon stock based on 46 Buys and one Hold assigned in the past three months. Furthermore, the average AMZN stock price target of $241.64 implies 15% upside potential from current levels.

Euro zone business activity accelerates in August as new orders grow, PMI shows
A man walks on a map showing the countries of the Eurozone in the hallway of the European Central Bank after a meeting of the ECB's governing council in Frankfurt, Germany, Thursday, June 6, 2024. (AP Photo/Michael Probst) LONDON - Euro zone businesses saw new orders increase for the first time since May 2024 in August, helping overall activity expand at the fastest pace in 15 months despite persistent weakness in exports, a survey said on Thursday. The HCOB Flash Eurozone Composite Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by S&P Global, rose to 51.1 in August from 50.9 in July, marking the third consecutive monthly improvement and the highest reading since May 2024. A Reuters poll had predicted a dip to 50.7. PMI readings above 50.0 indicate growth in activity while those below point to a contraction. 'Things are getting better. Economic activity has picked up in both manufacturing and services. Overall, we've seen a slight acceleration in growth over the past three months,' said Cyrus de la Rubia, chief economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank. The manufacturing sector showed notable improvement with its headline PMI rising to 50.5 from 49.8 in July, moving into expansion territory for the first time in more than three years. Manufacturing output grew at the quickest rate in nearly three-and-a-half years, with the subindex climbing to 52.3 from 50.6. Services activity continued to expand but at a reduced pace, with the bloc's dominant sector's PMI slipping to 50.7 from 51.0 in July. Germany, Europe's largest economy, registered its fastest growth since March, driven by a solid manufacturing expansion despite muted services performance. France's downturn eased to a marginal decline, the smallest in a year, while growth in the rest of the euro zone continued but softened slightly. Firms continued hiring for the sixth consecutive month, with the pace of job creation quickening to the fastest since June 2024. The employment gains were concentrated in services, while manufacturers continued to shed jobs. Inflation pressures intensified in August, with input costs rising at the sharpest rate in five months. Service sector cost inflation accelerated to the highest since March, while output prices across the bloc increased at the fastest pace in four months. 'The European Central Bank might wince a little at the rising cost pressures in the services sector. After all, it's banking on slower wage growth to help bring inflation down in this crucial part of the economy,' de la Rubia added. 'That said, there's a bit of relief in the fact that inflation in service-sector selling prices has remained more or less steady.' ECB policymakers are seen waiting until December if they opt to cut rates one more time, a Reuters poll found, but there is no longer a majority consensus for where the deposit rate will be by end-year. European stocks fall, U.S. dollar steady, traders wait for Jackson Hole
FTSE market information is displayed inside the London Stock Exchange, in the City of London, Monday, March 17, 2025. (AP Photo/Kin Cheung) European stock markets fell slightly in early trading on Thursday, hovering just below recent highs, as traders avoided making big moves and waited for the U.S. Federal Reserve's three-day annual Jackson Hole symposium. Jackson Hole starts on Thursday and focus will be on Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech on Friday, which could move markets as traders look for hints about the likelihood of a September rate cut. 'People are sitting on their hands. You have a couple of big known unknowns coming, with Jackson Hole tomorrow and the Fed in September,' said Tim Graf, head of macro strategy for EMEA at State Street Markets. 'This is the time to send the message, if you're going to ease, that it's coming,' he said. 'But I can also see them saying, we don't know the full effect of tariffs and inflation pressure is still not quite out of the economy and being a bit more balanced.' Traders had ramped up bets for a September cut following a surprisingly weak payrolls report at the start of this month, and were further encouraged after consumer price data showed limited upward pressure from tariffs. But they lowered their expectations slightly following the release of minutes from the Fed's July meeting. Stock markets stayed near recent highs during Asian trading, and Australia's benchmark hit a new record. At 0946 GMT, the pan-European STOXX 600 was down by 0.2 per cent, just below the five-month high it hit in the previous session. London's FTSE 100 was down 0.1 per cent, Germany's DAX was down 0.1 per cent and France's CAC 40 was down 0.4 per cent. The MSCI World Equity Index was down 0.1 per cent on the day. U.S. stock futures were mixed, with Nasdaq e-minis steady but S&P 500 e-minis down by 0.1 per cent. A U.S. tech selloff had continued for a second day on Wednesday, in a move analysts attributed to concerns about high valuations, profit-taking and risk aversion. Euro zone business activity accelerated in August, PMI data showed, with Germany registering its fastest growth since March and France's downturn easing. Euro zone bond yields were mostly higher, with the benchmark 10-year German Bund at 2.7374 per cent. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield was at 4.3101 per cent. The U.S. dollar index was up 0.2 per cent on the day at 98.225, and the euro was steady at US$1.1653. U.S. President Donald Trump intensified his effort to influence the Federal Reserve on Wednesday, calling on Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to resign on the basis of allegations made by one of his political allies about mortgages she holds in Michigan and Georgia. Cook said she had 'no intention of being bullied to step down' from her position at the central bank. Deutsche Bank analysts in a research note attributed a rise in gold overnight to renewed concerns about the Fed's independence. 'The news was a reminder of the lingering concerns over future Fed independence and risks of fiscal dominance, though the extent of the market reaction was fairly modest,' Deutsche Bank said. State Street Markets' Tim Graf said that although central bank independence is considered 'sacrosanct' by markets, it was not yet problematic. 'Markets quite rightly look through this, price maybe a little bit of risk premium for sure, but it's not something that I think really upsets the apple cart too much,' he said. Gold prices edged lower on Thursday, at $3340.61 per ounce. Oil prices rose, bolstered by signs of strong demand in the U.S. Reporting by Elizabeth Howcroft in Paris; Editing by Toby Chopra, Reuters
