Delhi reached out to private hospitals to join Centre's PMJAY health insurance scheme
However, big corporate hospitals have raised concerns over delayed payments and low package rates.
The National Health Authority, which is the implementing agency for the scheme is training state health authority officials and doctors on the scheme's modalities.
The Delhi government has allocated ₹ 2,144 crore for PMJAY, which is the world's largest health assurance scheme, benefiting the poor as well as over-70s.
'NHA informed that it has started handholding Delhi government to implement the scheme. It has started the training of the State Health Authority, sensitizing hospitals, officials etc to onboard the scheme,' said an official familiar with the matter requesting anonymity.
The official said the Delhi government is aware of the concerns raised by private hospitals and discussions are on.
Dr Girdhar Gyani, Director General, Association of Healthcare Providers said, 'Delhi government had earlier had its own scheme. The government had earlier issued an order that all those empaneled with the Delhi government schemes are deemed to be empaneled unless they certify that they are not interested. Those bigger hospitals who are not part of the Delhi government scheme had a meeting a few days back to discuss the key concerns regarding the scheme implementation.'
'The main issue is that hospitals are concerned about timely release of funds within one month. We have to understand that treatment package rates are low and if cash flow is not good, it would be difficult for them. Private hospitals are planning to meet the Delhi government to discuss the matter,' he said.
Major private hospital chains are not fully participating in the Ayushman Bharat scheme, primarily due to the inadequate pricing structure. The scheme's reimbursements fail to cover the genuine costs incurred by large hospitals, and these rates have not been adjusted for inflation, said on the corporate hospitals requesting anonymity.
Dr. Narin Sehgal, Sehgal, Medical Director, Sehgal Neo Hospital and Secretary Delhi Chapter AHPI said the basic problem with PMJAY is payments to the hospitals are very low.
'The smaller hospitals will be able to take the PMJAY willingly, but bigger corporate have been urging to modify the rates. PMJAY is very good scheme. But, hospitals like Max, Fortis and Apollo may consider the scheme if government consider their requests. We are in touch with the Delhi government to discuss PMJAY implementation in the city," Dr Sehgal.
Notably, Delhi has become the 35th state/UT to implement the PMJAY scheme. It is estimated that around three million poor and another 600,000 senior citizens will be the eligible beneficiaries, making a total about 3.6 million people in Delhi.
A senior Delhi government official aware of the matter said there is no shortage of funds and the government is in continuous talks with the bigger hospitals to onboard them on PMJAY.
'We have held several meetings with the big corporate hospitals to discuss the scheme implementation. We are listening to their concerns and we are hopeful that we will join us,' the official said.
A representative of Apollo Hospital said they are awaiting directions from the Delhi government.

108 CHCs identified for laxity in implementation of Ayushman Bharat scheme
At least 108 community health centres (CHCs) have been identified by officials of the State Agency For Comprehensive Health and Integrated Services (SACHIS) where Ayushman Bharat scheme is not being implemented properly due to issues in pre-authorisation. The meeting was attended by chief medical officers and other officials of the districts. During the review it was found that 108 CHCs do not run the scheme properly due to issues in pre-authorisation. In the meeting officials were asked to ensure all CHCs start facilitating the patients who have Ayushman Bharat cards. The officials were told to ensure in the next meeting that the scheme was implemented properly. 'With the payment received by the other CHCs in the state, several new equipment have been purchased that have improved the treatment facility and also incentive for the medical team. This has motivated staff at many CHCs and the same is being expected at all places,' said a press statement. Ayushman Bharat card provides ₹5 lakh cashless treatment for various health problems. A community health centre caters to over 5,000 population. State has over 960 CHCs empanelled for Ayushman Bharat scheme.

Super-speciality treatment now accessible to poor in UP: Yogi
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday asserted that adequate advanced medical facilities, along with the Ayushman Bharat card, has made super-speciality treatment accessible to economically weaker sections struggling with medical expenses for themselves and their families. 'There is no dearth of funds for treatment. In the past one year alone, ₹1,100 crore has been disbursed from the CM Relief Fund without any discrimination or pick-and-choose policy,' the chief minister said. He said that super-speciality healthcare is now available in Gorakhpur, and common citizens are benefitting through Ayushman Bharat and the CM Jan Arogya Yojana. In cases where Ayushman coverage falls short, assistance will be provided from the CM Relief Fund or legislators' funds. The chief minister also launched the hospital's patient app 'Regency My Care' and inspected the facilities. He said that earlier, expensive treatments were beyond the reach of the poor, but are now becoming easily accessible. The new 250-bed Regency Hospital, with an 80-bed ICU, will serve patients from eastern Uttar Pradesh, north-west Bihar and even Nepal. Yogi Adityanath emphasised that the government's goal is to ensure equal healthcare access without discrimination. He recalled the days when eastern UP had very poor medical infrastructure and BRD Medical College was the only major centre in the region. He highlighted that today AIIMS Gorakhpur, new medical colleges across districts and advanced centres such as the cancer facility at BHU have transformed healthcare in the region. Dr Atul Kapoor, chairman and MD of Regency Hospital, said Regency Health was founded on the belief that world-class healthcare should not remain confined to big cities. 'With the launch of our new super-speciality hospital in Gorakhpur, we are fulfilling that vision by bringing advanced technology, specialised expertise, and compassionate care closer to the people of Purvanchal. This hospital is not just a medical institution—it is a lifeline for the entire region,' he said. Equipped with 80 ICU beds and eight modular operation theatres, the tertiary care facility offers comprehensive services across all major specialties. It also houses the region's first dedicated cardiac care unit with advanced Cath Lab, IVUS technology, and 24-hour bypass surgeons, making life-saving CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) surgeries accessible locally.
