June 4 created history in AP politics: CM Naidu
Vijayawada: On completion of the first year of TDP-led NDA's victory in Andhra Pradesh Assembly polls, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said June 4, 2024, was the day that created history in the state politics.
"The day when dictators were swept away by the people's revolution. The day the people drove away, the madness that had been unleashed in the name of power. The day when the psycho regime came to an end and every citizen enjoyed freedom and peace," the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president posted on 'X'. Naidu recalled that it was the day when democracy was restored in the state by people who voted as a movement.
He said it was a day when the state, hurt by state terrorism, was placed in the hands of the coalition and ushered in welfare, development, and good governance, a day when the state won with the struggle of the yellow soldiers, the movement of the Jana Sainiks, and the support of the BJP.
The Chief Minister said the coalition government is working every day by treating the power given by the people a year ago as a responsibility to rebuild the state. "To fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people and to live up to the trust they placed in us, we have strengthened the governance, provided welfare and put the development back on rails," Naidu wrote.
The CM stated that on the occasion of the completion of a year of the one-sided verdict given to change the direction of the state and recalling the victory, he bows his head before the people.
"We promise to undertake many more development and welfare programs in the next four years. Congratulations and thanks to the workers and leaders of the Telugu Desam, Jana Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party, who paved the way for the victory of the alliance with their uncompromising fight against the destructive rulers," he added.

New Delhi: The Centre's policies aim to better equip middle-income families to face the future with confidence, an official statement said, highlighting the policy attention this segment will receive over the next four years. The statement, marking the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government's completion of the first year of its third term in office, also noted that 2.3 million central government employees will benefit from the new unified pension scheme (UPS) launched in April this year, which is a hybrid of contributory and assured models. The statement titled, 'the middle class story', discussed various measures implemented so far by the NDA government in taxation, pension, inflation reduction and connectivity. It said this segment of the population plays a vital role in India's growth story. UPS, which assures an employee a pension of 50% of the average basic pay drawn in the last one year before retirement, is open to those with at least 25 years of experience. For those with shorter service tenure, pension will be computed proportionately, with a minimum qualifying period of 10 years. They will get a minimum assured pension of ₹ 10,000 a month on retirement. If an employee passes away, then his family will receive 60% of the assured pension, the statement clarified. It is expected to benefit around 2.3 million central government employees, the statement said, adding that several state governments have also adopted this model, extending its coverage to over nine million individuals currently under the National Pension System. The statement also said the income tax relief announced in the Union budget for FY26 will benefit crores of salaried citizens. The budget had announced that individuals earning up to ₹ 12 lakh annually will now pay no income tax, except on special incomes like capital gains. With the standard deduction of ₹ 75,000, even those earning ₹ 12.75 lakh will pay no tax, the statement said. 'It shows a deep understanding of middle-class needs and comes despite the government giving up nearly ₹ 1 lakh crore in revenue,' the statement said. On the smart cities mission, the government said the plan, rolled out in 2015, saw 93% of the 7,545 approved projects completed by 2025, with a total investment of over ₹ 1.51 trillion.

Germany's Merz says 'no doubt' US to stick with NATO
Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Friday he had "no doubt" the United States would remain in NATO after a high-stakes meeting with President Donald Trump in the White House. Merz said he had raised the issue directly with Trump in talks on Thursday, during the chancellor's first trip to Washington since taking office last month. "The question that was asked was: do you have any plans to leave NATO? I can say it was answered with a very clear no," Merz said at an event hosted by the German family-owned business association. "I have no doubt at all that the American government will stick to NATO now after we all said we're doing more, we're making sure that we can defend ourselves in Europe. "I think this expectation was not unjustified. We have unfortunately been free-riders on American security guarantees for years and that's changing," he said. Merz earlier this year spearheaded moves to exempt most defence spending from Germany's strict constitutional debt limits and has signalled his intention to raise military spending by tens of billions of euros. During an Oval Office press conference Thursday, Trump welcomed Merz's moves to increase spending to patch up Germany's dilapidated military. "I know that you are spending more money on defence now, quite a bit more money, and that's a positive thing," Trump said. The US president has lobbied NATO partners to up their spending commitments to five percent of GDP from the current level of two percent. Defence ministers from the US-led military alliance met in Brussels on Thursday to discuss a change to the spending target ahead of a NATO summit later this month. US defence chief Pete Hegseth indicated allies were close to a deal to boost military budgets.
