Guinea's National Elephants and South Africa's Bafana Bafana will face off for the first time in the history of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Monday.
This match, at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in the bustling city of Kampala, will not only add a new chapter to the tournament's history but also mark an important moment for both teams as they aim to secure crucial Group C points.
South Africa will become the 15th different opponent Guinea has faced in CHAN competition, while this fixture will represent the ninth team South Africa have met in the tournament. It will also be Guinea's third outing against a COSAFA nation, having previously faced Zambia twice.
South Africa was back at work on Saturday, a day after sharing the spoils with Algeria in our opening match of the African Nations Championship in Kampala, Uganda, yesterday. Next up for the South Africans is the second Group C match against Guinea on Monday. pic.twitter.com/Wxe148zbUw — Bafana Bafana (@BafanaBafana) August 9, 2025

Bafana Bafana's coach, Molefi Ntseki, acknowledges the challenge presented by Guinea, who are known for their attacking flair and possess players who can turn the tide of the match at any moment.
'We will be going into this game fully aware that they are a very offensive team,' Ntseki stated.
'They've got some good individual players that can hurt you anytime, given a chance. We need to respect our opponents while focusing on how we want to play both offensively and defensively.'
Ntseki highlighted specific concerns regarding Guinea's prowess in aerial duels and set-piece situations, underscoring the importance of discipline and strategy.
'We're aware that they have good headers of the ball, and that makes set-plays a critical area for us to manage,' he continued. 'Transition play is also a concern, especially with players like Aboubacar Bangoura, Alhassane Bangoura, and Bangaly Cisse in their ranks.'
As for the tactical preparations, midfielder Keagan Dolly emphasised the significance of every match in this challenging group.
'We had a good match against Algeria, which served as our opener in the tournament. It has boosted our confidence,' he said. 'Now, we need to focus on ourselves and treat every game as a final, knowing that each one is important for our progression in the tournament.'
With meticulous preparation off the field, Dolly insists that the key to success lies in adhering to their structure and executing their game plan effectively.
'The game isn't going to be easy. We've done our homework, and it's vital for us to perform well and achieve what we set out to do,' he added.
Both teams come into this clash with contrasting fortunes. Guinea began their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Niger but suffered a setback with a heavy 3-0 defeat to co-hosts Uganda — their biggest margin of defeat at CHAN — which ended an impressive eight-match unbeaten run in open play.
South Africa, ranked 56th in the world, salvaged a point in their opener with a 1-1 draw against 36th-ranked Algeria. This was the first time since 2014 that Bafana Bafana failed to win their opening match.
They have scored in all seven of their CHAN group-stage matches to date, though they have often conceded as well.
Guinea attempted 384 passes in their match against Uganda — their highest total at the current finals — with Aboubacar Bangoura creating four goal-scoring chances. South Africa's Thabiso Kutumela netted his second CHAN goal from their first shot on target against Algeria, underlining the firepower they possess.
For Guinea, defeat would mean back-to-back group-stage losses for only the second time in their history. South Africa, meanwhile, will aim for their first win of the tournament and a step closer to reaching the quarter-finals for the second time.
Under stand-in coach Molefi Ntseki, Bafana Bafana will be determined to make this historic encounter one to remember.

Thabiso Kutumela has a new lease on life as Bafana Bafana 'free agents' target knockouts

Thabiso Kutumela, front, and his Bafana Bafana teammates seek a place in the CHAN playoffs. Image: Backpagepix When coach Molefi Ntseki built his Bafana Bafana squad for the CHAN tournament around free agents, he knew he was taking a risk. These players could have either lost their passion for the game, or used the platform as a stepping stone to secure their next moves. Luckily for Ntseki, it appears he has backed the right horse so far. His players are showing real hunger, having collected four points from two games. While both the win and the draw were the result of a team playing cohesively, several individuals have stood out. Striker Thabiso Kutumela has enjoyed a dream tournament so far — scoring in the first game, then assisting and scoring in the second. Kutumela was at Richards Bay last season after being released by Mamelodi Sundowns, but he failed to make much of an impact, managing just one goal in 11 league matches. That was clearly a poor return for the former Cape Town City and Maritzburg United striker — now known as a Durban City player — given his pedigree. Now, the 32-year-old has found new life with Bafana, putting his experience to good use as he looks for his next move. Kutumela shouldn't struggle to find options once CHAN ends, as he has shown he still has plenty of gas in the tank — and fire in his belly. As things stand in Group C after last night's action in the African Nations Championship in Kampala, Uganda. — Bafana Bafana (@BafanaBafana) August 12, 2025 Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Speaking to this week, Kutumela said he was pleased with his contributions so far and is determined to keep performing well. 'I'm happy for myself and for the team. We're progressing well — we're on four points now as we head into another game on Friday, where we need to make it seven points,' he said. 'I'm happy that I can help the team move forward. I think when you get the chance and your confidence is going up, it means you're doing what you do best.' Kutumela may have been Bafana's standout player so far, but he hasn't done it alone. He's had strong support from teammates — most notably, captain Neo Maema. Maema has been a breath of fresh air for Bafana, having played a key role in the team's qualification for the main event, currently being held across Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. His impressive performances in the qualifiers earned him a place in Mamelodi Sundowns' squad for the FIFA Club World Cup in the US. However, it appears he has since slipped down the pecking order, with rumours suggesting he's been loaned to Simba SC in Tanzania for the remainder of the season. A change of environment could do "Billy" — as Maema is affectionately known — a world of good, especially as he remains highly rated back home. Many fans of Sundowns' rivals, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, have even said they wouldn't mind seeing him in their colours. But that seems more like wishful thinking. Gallants prove their resilience under new coach Lafitte

Marumo Gallants coach Alexandre Lafitte pleased with his sides start to the season. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Marumo Gallants are emerging as the team to beat after another impressive 2–1 win over Betway Premiership title favourites Orlando Pirates on Tuesday. Goals from Daniel Msendami and Jaisen Clifford fueled the Bloemfontein-based outfit's spirited comeback at a packed Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium—after Patrick Maswanganyi had put the visitors ahead early in the first half. Siwelele sa Marumo have been impressive in the two matches they have played so far in the league, and they had to withstand a relentless onslaught from the Buccaneers which they successfully managed to resist picking up a crucial equaliser on the brink of halftime. Their surge of momentum began in the second half as they grew in confidence, while the Sea Robbers—who had started brightly—lost their rhythm and failed to create any chances in yet another disappointing showing for them. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading New coach Alexandre Lafitte has certainly hit the ground running, and having secured back-to-back wins after their opening day 2-1 win against Richards Bay, he is obviously pleased with how his side executed their game plan against the title favourites. 'It's a fantastic result. I am happy for the fans and the team,' Lafitte said after the match. 'It was a difficult game, they are a fantastic team, the game plan was good, because the objective was that when you don't have the ball, press high, and when you have the ball play a bit more. 'The first goal was good, and in the second half we had more possession and we used it well.' With the MTN8 taking centre stage this weekend, Lafitte and his charges will receive an extra weekend's rest. They will next face AmaZulu in a league encounter in just over a week. Interestingly, the Bloemfontein outfit has delivered their best football in the second halves of both their opening games, scoring decisive goals late in each contest. Lafitte credited this resilience and challenged his squad to keep evolving, stressing that they are not yet a finished product. 'It was a good performance and result for us, it's two games in a row with us scoring after 90 minutes and I think that it's good for us mentally. Moving forward it will be important to improve when we have the ball but I think we had a good start. 'I think it's important to have a structure, to break the space and find players free, and we will need to work for that for a long time. Sometimes you will make mistakes, but I would prefer if we made mistakes and learn from them and improve the quality of our game.' New centre-forward Clifford scored his first goal for the club—and, as one of only a few new recruits in a major squad overhaul, he provides a perfect example of Lafitte's vision. The coach also confirmed the club is still in the market for reinforcements before the transfer window closes. 'I am happy to be here, we have been working with the President to improve the squad, when the time is right, we will look into two or three players, a defender, midfielder and striker.'

Springbok Women target maiden playoff berth at Women's Rugby World Cup

Springbok Women's assistant coach Laurian Johannes-Haupt says the team's preparation for the Women's Rugby World Cup has gone well. Image: SA Rugby The Springbok Women plan to ride the momentum from their recent top performances into the Women's Rugby World Cup, which starts next weekend in England. The South Africans will take on Brazil in their opening match on Sunday, 24 August, coming off the high of beating a Black Ferns XV in their second match at Athlone Stadium. The Bok Women are currently in camp in Johannesburg before they jet off to the United Kingdom. In Group A, they will also face Italy and France. The Bok Women have had four tough matches — two against second-ranked Canada and two against the Black Ferns XV — over the past month and a half in preparation for the World Cup. The Tests against Canada were rather one-sided but gave the Boks a clear idea of what needed improvement ahead of the global showpiece. However, they performed much better against the New Zealanders, who brought a second-string team to Cape Town to take on the South Africans. Video Player is loading. 'The momentum we built in the matches we played was great for what we wanted to achieve. The win in the final match made it even more special because we fine-tuned our game and then reaped the benefits of it,' said Johannes-Haupt. 'The girls are heading into the World Cup with a lot of confidence, knowing who we want to be and where we are heading as a team. 'We got to play against strong opposition, and that ultimately just helped us lift our game. We wanted to tweak a few things, went through our processes, and the girls executed wel — especially at the end.' The Bok Women assembled in Johannesburg after a short break to put the final touches on their World Cup preparation.
