Thabiso Kutumela has a new lease on life as Bafana Bafana 'free agents' target knockouts

When coach Molefi Ntseki built his Bafana Bafana squad for the CHAN tournament around free agents, he knew he was taking a risk. These players could have either lost their passion for the game, or used the platform as a stepping stone to secure their next moves.
Luckily for Ntseki, it appears he has backed the right horse so far. His players are showing real hunger, having collected four points from two games. While both the win and the draw were the result of a team playing cohesively, several individuals have stood out.
Striker Thabiso Kutumela has enjoyed a dream tournament so far — scoring in the first game, then assisting and scoring in the second.
Kutumela was at Richards Bay last season after being released by Mamelodi Sundowns, but he failed to make much of an impact, managing just one goal in 11 league matches. That was clearly a poor return for the former Cape Town City and Maritzburg United striker — now known as a Durban City player — given his pedigree.
Now, the 32-year-old has found new life with Bafana, putting his experience to good use as he looks for his next move. Kutumela shouldn't struggle to find options once CHAN ends, as he has shown he still has plenty of gas in the tank — and fire in his belly.

Speaking to SAFA.net this week, Kutumela said he was pleased with his contributions so far and is determined to keep performing well.
'I'm happy for myself and for the team. We're progressing well — we're on four points now as we head into another game on Friday, where we need to make it seven points,' he said.
'I'm happy that I can help the team move forward. I think when you get the chance and your confidence is going up, it means you're doing what you do best.'
Kutumela may have been Bafana's standout player so far, but he hasn't done it alone. He's had strong support from teammates — most notably, captain Neo Maema.
Maema has been a breath of fresh air for Bafana, having played a key role in the team's qualification for the main event, currently being held across Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.
His impressive performances in the qualifiers earned him a place in Mamelodi Sundowns' squad for the FIFA Club World Cup in the US. However, it appears he has since slipped down the pecking order, with rumours suggesting he's been loaned to Simba SC in Tanzania for the remainder of the season.
A change of environment could do "Billy" — as Maema is affectionately known — a world of good, especially as he remains highly rated back home. Many fans of Sundowns' rivals, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, have even said they wouldn't mind seeing him in their colours. But that seems more like wishful thinking.

Potso Mohami's rise as a Powerhouse in women's football administration
SEDIBENG.- This week, Sedibeng Ster shines the spotlight on the remarkable journey of one of the Vaal's most influential women in football administration, Potso Mohami. From the dusty streets of Bophelong to the international stage, her story is one of passion, determination, and breaking barriers in a sport still largely dominated by men. When she started as an intern at SAFA, little did she know that one day she would be one of the powerhouse women football administrators to have come from this region. She was introduced by the then-president, Dr. Molefi Oliphant, who immediately recognised her potential. What started as a learning opportunity soon became a calling, and today, Mohami stands among the most respected football administrators in South Africa and across the continent. Currently in Kenya as one of CAF's general coordinators, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Mohami continues to carry the SAFA flag high at major continental tournaments. From the CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco to countless men's and women's competitions across Africa, her footprint in the game is undeniable. Mohami grew up in a football family. Not only that, for example, her late father, Bra Mojo, was the Bafana Bafana kit manager. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport from Kenya, Mohami said she will forever be grateful to be part of SAFA. She said she has learned a lot about football since joining SAFA. 'I was lucky that I grew up in a football family, and it ran in my blood. Our home was a clubhouse, and this is how I developed an interest in football.'

Manqoba Mngqithi insists Golden Arrows remains a work in progress despite derby win
HALALISANI Vilakazi of Richards Bay FC competes with Siyanda Ndlovu of Lamontville Golden Arrows during the Betway Premiership at King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix LAMONTVILLE Golden Arrows got their season back on track with a hard-fought 1-0 win over neighbors Richards Bay FC in their Betway Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday. Junior Dion proved to be the difference between the two sides, as his second-half strike ensured Arrows bounced back from their opening-day defeat against Siwelele FC, while also securing bragging rights in the KwaZulu-Natal derby. In a match where Abafana Bes'thende spent large spells on the back foot, they will take confidence from grinding out a timely result in the wake of their confidence-denting first loss. Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi was pleased to leave with maximum points, though he admitted his side did not fully control the match and still has plenty to work on even through victory. 'The whole of the first half I was not happy with our output in the final third,' Mngqithi said after his side's win. 'In the second half, Richards Bay came in stronger, and they put a lot of pressure in our box. The good thing about them is that with any half chance, they are always looking to take a shot, and that is probably the biggest difference between us and them. 'Overall performance was okay; I will not say it was good, because we struggled to keep control of the game. Even when we had some good passing moments, we were edgy; we never really put our foot on the ground. 'We will improve, and it was good that we got the result. We were edgy, and it was probably coming from the previous performance and the mistakes we made, because we have committed some silly mistakes. I do not know what is happening, because in pre-season we were very clean.' While the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor believes his squad has enough quality, he has not ruled out adding reinforcements. 'We have got a very good bunch of players; it's just unfortunate that some of them are still carrying some minor injuries. 'It would be nice to add one or two players, but I am not rushing into that. I must make sure that I build on what I have. We are hoping to get some new players to add to our spine—one or two—and I am optimistic it will happen.' Richards Bay coach Ronnie Gabriel was positive about his side's effort and application on the night but lamented their inability to deliver the killer blow when they had Arrows under pressure for much of the game.
