Manqoba Mngqithi insists Golden Arrows remains a work in progress despite derby win

LAMONTVILLE Golden Arrows got their season back on track with a hard-fought 1-0 win over neighbors Richards Bay FC in their Betway Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday.
Junior Dion proved to be the difference between the two sides, as his second-half strike ensured Arrows bounced back from their opening-day defeat against Siwelele FC, while also securing bragging rights in the KwaZulu-Natal derby.
In a match where Abafana Bes'thende spent large spells on the back foot, they will take confidence from grinding out a timely result in the wake of their confidence-denting first loss.
Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi was pleased to leave with maximum points, though he admitted his side did not fully control the match and still has plenty to work on even through victory.
'The whole of the first half I was not happy with our output in the final third,' Mngqithi said after his side's win.
'In the second half, Richards Bay came in stronger, and they put a lot of pressure in our box. The good thing about them is that with any half chance, they are always looking to take a shot, and that is probably the biggest difference between us and them.
'Overall performance was okay; I will not say it was good, because we struggled to keep control of the game. Even when we had some good passing moments, we were edgy; we never really put our foot on the ground.
'We will improve, and it was good that we got the result. We were edgy, and it was probably coming from the previous performance and the mistakes we made, because we have committed some silly mistakes. I do not know what is happening, because in pre-season we were very clean.'
While the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor believes his squad has enough quality, he has not ruled out adding reinforcements.
'We have got a very good bunch of players; it's just unfortunate that some of them are still carrying some minor injuries.
'It would be nice to add one or two players, but I am not rushing into that. I must make sure that I build on what I have. We are hoping to get some new players to add to our spine—one or two—and I am optimistic it will happen.'
Richards Bay coach Ronnie Gabriel was positive about his side's effort and application on the night but lamented their inability to deliver the killer blow when they had Arrows under pressure for much of the game.

Thembinkosi Lorch and Neo Maema head Mamelodi Sundowns' big-name exodus
Thembinkosi Lorch turning out for Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in the Botola Pro 1. Image: BACKPAGEPIX Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the exits of Thembinkosi Lorch and Neo Maema, marking another chapter in a busy clear-out ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. Lorch's departure comes after weeks of speculation surrounding his future, with a return to North Africa now on the cards. The Bafana Bafana international spent the second half of last season on loan at Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, where he delivered a string of impressive displays in both the Botola Pro League and the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The 32-year-old was a standout in Morocco, scoring twice in the league and netting against Juventus in the Club World Cup, while also featuring against Manchester City and Al Ain. His ability to run at defenders and create moments in big matches made him a fan favourite at the Red Castle, even after the departure of coach Rulani Mokwena, with whom he had reunited in Casablanca. Sundowns confirmed on Thursday night that Lorch would not be returning to Chloorkop. Welcome back Nyoso 🫱🏿🫲🏻⏳️⏳️⏳️ — Wydad Red Castle (@WydadRedCastle) August 14, 2025 Video Player is loading. After two unforgettable years, one league title, 26 appearances, seven goals, and four assists, the Yellow Nation thanks and celebrates Thembinkosi Lorch,' Sundowns said in a statement on their social media platforms. ' Lorch joined Sundowns in January 2024 from Orlando Pirates, but despite flashes of quality, he struggled to establish himself in the squad, especially after Miguel Cardoso's arrival as head coach. Hot on the heels of that announcement, Sundowns also confirmed the exit of Maema, who leaves the Brazilians after four trophy-laden years. The 29-year-old midfielder arrived in 2021 from Bloemfontein Celtic and went on to make over 100 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists. I pray that this thing of releasing players won't backfire, considering the amount of games our team plays every season🤞 — Lethu Godide (@SiphosethuNtul1) August 15, 2025

Who will be the first PSL coach to bite the dust?
The 2025/26 Premier Soccer League (PSL) kicked off earlier this month and already, some coaches are feeling the heat. Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has started the Betway Premiership on a low as his side suffered back-to-back defeats. The 46-year-old joined the club from Marumo Gallants and despite a promising pre-season and a good start in the MTN8, things fell apart in a space of a week. An opening loss to Sekhukhune United raised eyebrows but it was the surprise defeat to Marumo Gallants which put the coach under pressure. It's doubtful that the coach will be let go this early, but if the Buccaneers somehow find a suitable replacement, he might be out of a job next month. Defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 and poor league results might force Irvine Khoza to make changes. Another PSL coach who might be out is Chippa United head coach Sinethemba Badela. According to reports, the coach has had a difficult relationship with the club's sporting director, Sinesipho Mali. According to SABC Sport , Badela could be fired by the Chilli Boys just two months after being appointed as their coach. At Chippa, is all about results and if the coach can bring positive results early this season, he might survive. In the past, Chippa Mpengesi has been quick to sharpen his axe whenever results were not coming. It remains to be seen if Chippa United will be the first PSL team to once again fire a coach. No DNA, just RSA! Massive sporting weekend ahead for Mzansi
South African sports fans can look forward to an exciting weekend with the MTN8 semi-final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, the Springboks' Rugby Championship title defence against the Wallabies, and Dricus du Plessis's UFC middleweight title fight against Khamzat Chimaev. Picture: Saeed Khan/AFP It will be difficult to move away from the couch this weekend if you're a South African sports fan, as there is an embarrassment of riches over the different sports. The Springboks, Dricus Du Plessis and MTN8 action will be high on the agenda. The best part is that most of the drama will not overlap with the rugby, UFC and soccer, well-spaced out. First up, it could be an epic clash in the MTN8 semi-final first leg between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium. Both sides have had a less than perfect start to the new season, with Pirates in particular coming off two Betway Premiership defeats in a row. The match kicks off at 3pm.
