Luka Doncic in tight spot as $11.7B Giorgio Armani move sees Slovenia lose Cancar, Nebo for EuroBasket clash
Slovenia's Stozice Arena was packed to capacity on Friday night, August 8. Fans came to see Luka Doncic back on the home court after his NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers. The stands were full of Slovenian flags, 'Luka 2.0' signs, and even a few purple Lakers jerseys with the number 77.
The night had the energy of a celebration, but something important was missing from the court.
Luka Doncic Slams Milano as Armani's Club Blocks Cancar, Nebo from Slovenia Duty
The Slovenian national basketball team started their EuroBasket warm-up match in Ljubljana, Slovenia, without two of their top players - forward Vlatko Cancar and center Josh Nebo. Both play for Olimpia Milano, the Italian club owned by billionaire fashion icon Giorgio Armani, whose net worth is estimated at $11.7 billion.
Olimpia Milano refused to release Cancar and Nebo for Slovenia's preparation games, saying they were still recovering from past injuries. On August 6, the club's general manager, Christos Stavropoulos, said in an official statement:
'In agreement with them, a procedure for their gradual return to action will be implemented to safeguard principally their health and long-term competitiveness.'
But Luka Doncic told Slovenian media a different version before tip-off. He said,
'The Lakers allowed me to play, but Milano doesn't.

It should always be the player's decision.'
The Slovenian Basketball Federation confirmed they had offered a counter-medical opinion, but Milano stood firm. National team coach Aleksandar Sekulic later added,
'There was pressure from the club, so both had to withdraw.'
Luka Doncic's solo show falls short as Slovenia miss Cancar, Nebo in loss to Germany
On August 8, Slovenia hosted Germany in Ljubljana for the first of their EuroBasket warm-up matches. It was Luka Doncic's first game since the Lakers' playoff exit in May 2025. He scored 19 points in 24 minutes, showing sharp shooting, quick passes, and confidence.
But with Cancar and Nebo missing, Slovenia struggled against Germany's size and depth.
Germany, even without Dennis Schroder, Daniel Theis, and Maodo Lo, had Franz Wagner, David Kramer, and several other NBA and EuroLeague players. Wagner scored 18 points in 17 minutes, and Kramer also had 18. Germany led by as much as 18 points and won 103–89.
Slovenia's lack of size and athleticism was clear. The Germans trapped Doncic in pick-and-rolls, doubled him often, and forced other players to take shots.
Slovenia will face Germany again on August 10 and Lithuania on August 15 in more warm-ups before EuroBasket begins on August 27, 2025. They are in Group D with France, Israel, Belgium, Iceland, and host Poland.

While Giorgio Armani was not in the arena that night, his club's decision had a major impact on Slovenia's roster - and left Luka Doncic carrying the team almost alone.

'I hate this so much': Frustrated Rishabh Pant shares injury struggle on social media
NEW DELHI: Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of action since the fourth Test of India's recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England, and his absence looks set to continue for some time following a painful toe fracture sustained during the match. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. The southpaw picked up the injury when an attempt to reverse sweep off Chris Woakes struck his right toe, forcing him to play through discomfort before being sidelined. Poll Do you think Rishabh Pant will make a successful comeback after his injury? Absolutely! Maybe, depends on recovery. Uncertain, injuries are tough. On Wednesday, Pant took to Instagram to vent his frustration, posting a picture of his plastered foot on his story with the blunt caption: 'I hate this so much.' But while the frustration is real, Pant has found a lighter way to pass the time — in the kitchen. Earlier in the day, the 27-year-old shared a playful social media video of himself baking pizzas, limping slightly yet grinning in a chef's apron as he kneaded dough and arranged toppings. 'Ghar pe to kuch banaya nahi hai, yaha pizza bana raha hai' ('I haven't cooked anything at home, and here I am making pizza'), Pant quipped, adding an Italian flourish to his caption: 'Impasto, salsa, forno… and me.' In the clip, Pant told viewers, 'Today I'm going to show you how to make pizza… I think I'm gonna make vegetarian pizza. With the truffle? Yeah, with the truffle.' Ever the entertainer, he joked mid-session: 'Can I use your scissor, please? Where is it? Pizza is getting ready. I'm going to wait for it. Very hot in here, boys and girls.' He signed off with his trademark chuckle: 'That's the only thing I can do with a broken foot right now. Mother must be thinking — ghar pe to kuch banaya nahi hai, yaha pizza bana raha hai.' Watch: While his comeback date remains uncertain, Pant's latest posts prove that even in recovery, he's keeping his spirits high.

Jannik Sinner a competition animal: How coach's advice scripted Italian star's rise
Darren Cahill's long-term coaching approach has played a crucial role in Jannik Sinner's rise to the top of men's tennis. Speaking during the Cincinnati Open, Cahill emphasised the importance of consistent, day-to-day work, which has been key in transforming the Italian star into one of the sport's most formidable teaming up with Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi in 2022, Sinner has made significant progress, winning four Grand Slam titles, including back-to-back Australian Open victories. 'So it's not just four or five days when you can make those big changes. It's the combination of a year or two of just pushing him day to day and making sure we continue to work on those things,' Cahill was quoted as saying.'Jannik Sinner wants to compete'Sinner's success comes from targeted improvements, especially on his serve. Early in his partnership with Cahill, he was encouraged to use his frame more effectively, adding power and precision to his first serve. This improved his follow-up shots and reduced long his natural intensity and technical focus, Sinner has set himself apart. Now a global contender, he's not just a future champion, but a current force. Cahill also praised Carlos Alcaraz, noting that both players have elevated the game, separating themselves from the field, with others now chasing them.'One thing I did say is, 'The serve needs to improve. You're six foot four and you're a strong lad. You need to be able to get more miles per hour on that first serve, better direction on that first serve. Then not only do you start winning some free points from your first serve, but also your Plus One becomes much more effective. If people can neutralise your serve, you have to work much harder for your points.''Then his questions came, one after the other It's typical of him. He wants to compete. He's a competition animal. We're seeing an incredible level of tennis at the moment, with Carlos [Alcaraz] and Jannik. If you look at their body of work over the past couple of years, they've separated themselves from the field.
