TV star makes an embarrassing mistake about the end of a VERY high-profile AFL romance

Daily Mail6 hours ago
Footy broadcaster Garry Lyon had an awkward moment while on air as he mistakenly thought AFL star Harley Reid's relationship with AFLW player Yasmin Duursma was still going.
The West Coast Eagles midfielder, 20, had been dating Duursma since January last year, but the footballers quietly split last month.
Lyon, who mustn't be up to date with footy's dating news, was speaking to Duursma's brother Xavier, who plays for Essendon, on SEN Breakfast on Tuesday.
The Fox Sports star and co-host Tim Watson had been talking about Duursma's younger brother Willem when Lyon said, 'And your brother-in-law, Harley, he could come in as well.'
Duursma laughed and Lyon quickly realised his blunder, saying, 'Oh, hang on.'
Watson interjected with, 'Oh, Garry, you need to catch up with the news, mate.'
Duursma commented: 'We still like Harley'.
Lyon was apologetic about the mistake. 'No, good. I should have checked that. Sorry about that.'
In July, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Reid had removed Duursma's initials from his Instagram bio, while Duursma deleted pictures of the pair from her own feed.
The couple, who had known each other since childhood, made their red-carpet debut together at last year's Brownlow Medal.
Meanwhile, speculation is mounting that Reid could sign the 'biggest deal in AFL history'.
Essendon legend Tim Watson announced on SEN Breakfast that St Kilda had offered $25million to lure Reid back to Victoria.
'They've also made a Godfather offer to Harley Reid of $25 million over 12 years. That's the number that's coming via the West Coast Eagles at the moment,' Watson said, referring to the 'offer you can't refuse' line from the famous movie.
'I'm not making this up. This is what I was told yesterday. This has absolutely got everybody in the footy world spinning.
'That's the information that I received, that the West Coast Eagles believe that there's been an offer tabled by St Kilda around $25 million over 12 years.'
Reid is contracted at the Eagles until the end of 2026.

Shane Warne's son Jackson breaks his silence on the shocking way he found out his father had died: 'I looked at him as Superman'

Jackson Warne has revealed what went on behind the scenes the day his famous dad, Shane Warne, died. Speaking for the first time about the tragic events, the 26-year-old said he was with members of his family when he learned that Shane, 52, had suffered a fatal heart attack. 'Worst phone call of my life,' Jackson said in a new interview, three years after his father's death. Speaking to the Herald Sun on Monday, Jackson said he was with his mother, Simone Callahan, and his eldest sister, Brooke, when Shane's manager, Andrew Neophitou, called with the horrific news. Jackson explained that there were initially two separate phone calls, the first explaining that Shane had a massive heart attack, and the second informing the family that a resuscitation attempt was underway. The podcaster and his family had to wait an agonising 90 minutes before James Erskine, Shane's manager, called again with an update. 'It was just the worst hour and a half,' Jackson said. When the sad news finally came, Jackson said that he and his family all broke down in tears. 'I found out at the same time as the rest of the world,' Jackson said. 'As soon as I hung up on the first call, I got messages from people saying, "tell me it's not true" and it has to be fake. 'And I thought, surely that's not what's going to get him. There was not a single part of me that thought dad wouldn't make it. That thought wasn't there 100 percent. 'I looked at him as Superman. I didn't think anything would happen to him. It still is such a shock.' Shane died suddenly from a massive heart attack while on holiday in Thailand in March 2022. The megastar cricketer turned pundit and businessman was found unconscious in a villa in the resort of Koh Samui. Thai police said that Warne was one of four friends staying in the villa. One of the group tried to wake Shane for food at around 5pm on March 4, but the athlete was found to be unresponsive. Warne's manager Neophitou performed CPR on the cricket great for around 20 minutes to try and save his life before an ambulance arrived. He was then taken to the Thai International Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Jackson recently revealed how his new career move is 'therapy' to help him cope with the loss of his father. The budding media star has launched his new podcast, Warnes Way, and explains how he pays tribute to his dad on set. 'We've got a studio we've set up which is in dad's old office so it feels like he's there,' Jackson told the Herald Sun last week. 'We've got all his memorabilia, his book, his ashtray, it's really special.' Jackson says that he and his dad had originally planned to do a father-and-son podcast together back in 2018, but it never happened. With guests who knew his dad - such as Eddie McGuire and Mark Howard - Jackson says the podcast has served as a means of healing his grief. 'I'm also treating it as a bit of therapy for me,' the professional poker player said. 'I don't see a therapist but when I talk to people like Mark Howard and Eddie McGuire it's so personal and we talk about stories with dad.'

'We thrive when we're the underdog'

It already feels like this season might be a tricky one for Newcastle United. Pre-season and the transfer window thus far have been blighted - losses in games we expected (or, maybe, hoped) to win, and almost a bi-weekly thwart of our transfer targets. We wouldn't want things to be easy now would we?So then, am I hopeful for the season ahead? My dad text me after our two home friendlies this weekend and said "it's going to be a long season". So to offer balance to his obvious lack of hope, I say yes. I say yes because even though our transfer activity has been chaotic and objectively bad, we still have several absolutely class international players in our squad. At time of writing, Alexander Isak remains a Newcastle player. And Eddie Howe remains our head coach. These are all buoying thoughts. I hope we not only manage to hold onto Isak but can clear the air with him for the season ahead. It benefits team and player!I don't think it'll be easy. Champions League football isn't supposed to be easy, and we could have done with reinforcements. I'm worried about what literally one injury to a key player will do to derail our season. We were in the Champions League two seasons ago playing in Paris without a full bench. I hoped we'd be further away from that situation. But the window isn't closed, and we thrive when we're the underdog, right? So it'll all be completely fine!If this all reads like I'm not only trying to convince you, but also myself, there may be an element of that. I'm determined to go into this season positive. We've got loads to play for, and we need to back the squad and more from Charlotte Robson at the True Faith: Newcastle United Podcast, externalGet more from Charlotte on this page all season and remember you can sign up for Newcastle news notifications here

'Ahead of the game' and 'ready to compete'

A year ago, there was a lot more fear than hope at summer had not been promising - the biggest problems in the squad had not been fixed and there was a new manager who not everyone was convinced by to replace the old manager who not everyone was convinced by.A lot of the transfers felt like sideways moves rather than impactful upgrades, and some of them looked entirely of that was compounded by some horrific pre-season showings. One cannot help but be swayed by the team's performance in those games, no matter how often they are shown to have little bearing on things once the season proper kicks months on, things have go into this campaign with the most hope around them since Thomas Tuchel's first full season at the of the shambolic pre-season showings of a year ago, they have just cruised past two very good teams who should have been far ahead of them in terms of preparation. The momentum from a strong end to the season carried through the Club World Cup, and on the evidence of these two friendlies, should take Chelsea into the Premier League season in great summer they have made meaningful upgrades to the first team, addressed the biggest problems in the squad, added quality depth and kept their manager in feels like this Chelsea team are finally ahead of the game rather than scrambling to catch only fear is that the legacy of the Club World Cup is the side slowing down later in the year - but there is no sign of the slow start that had been team looks ready to compete on all fronts, and for the biggest more from Will Faulks at Chelsea News, externalGet more from Will on this page all season and remember you can sign up for Chelsea news notifications here
