Two of the highest-rated K-dramas, Suspicious Partner and the Baeksang winner, Beyond Evil, are getting the Japanese remake treatment. The country, which has one of the largest K-drama viewing demographics, already boasts a range of shows that have been adapted, including Nevertheless, The World of the Married, Boys Over Flowers, Signal, and more. These latest remakes are expected not only to entertain Japanese audiences but also to expand the reach of K-dramas across Asia.
Suspicious Partner Japanese version release date
The 2017 legal K-drama, starring South Korea's A-lister Ji Chang Wook, initially pulled in a modest domestic viewership. However, its popularity soared after Netflix acquired the rights for international distribution, and since then, the show, with its 20-episode run, has become one of the all-time hits. It also stars Choi Tae Joon and Kwon Nara. The news of the Japanese remake was first confirmed by SBS on March 25. The story follows a prosecutor trainee who unexpectedly becomes a murder suspect, forcing her mentor to become her private attorney and protect her from chaebols trying to frame her.

The Japanese remake will air not only in Japan but also across Asia, including South Korea, via Disney+. Written by Kwon Ki Young and directed by Park Seon Ho, the adaptation will premiere on April 29, starring Yusei Yagi and Kyoko Saito. In the original show, Ji Chang Wook and Nam Ji Hyun played a prosecutor and a rookie lawyer who fall in love while solving a crime mystery.
In a press statement, Yusei Yagi said, 'I feel honoured to play the role originally portrayed by Ji Chang Wook, whom I've known for a while. I never thought I'd have the chance to take on a character with such significance in the original series, and I feel a deep connection to the story.' Meanwhile, Keiko Saito emphasised that the Japanese version of Suspicious Partner will offer unexpected twists with plenty of romance and suspense. 'This series will be filled with unexpected developments and a mix of romance and suspense. Each character possesses unique traits that will keep viewers engaged from start to finish. I hope everyone will come to love the Japanese version of 'Suspicious Partner' as much as we do!'
Beyond Evil to get Japanese makeover
Released in 2021, the Korean psychological thriller Beyond Evil received seven Baeksang Award nominations and won three—Best Drama, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor for Shin Ha Kyun. On April 23, SLL, the company behind the series, confirmed that the show will be adapted into a Japanese version, set to air on their local broadcaster, WOWOW, in July. While the remake will retain the core story and key themes, it will be reworked to suit the Japanese culture. Japanese actors Ken Yasuda and Koshi Mizukami will take on the roles originally portrayed by Shin Ha Kyun and Yeo Jin Goo in the Korean version.
The story revolves around a series of crimes connected to a tragic case from 20 years ago, as two fearless detectives from the Manyang Police Substation relentlessly pursue a killer whose disturbing mindset forces them to break the rules. The drama explores heavy themes like morality, trauma, and what it truly means to be a 'monster.' As the investigation begins, the detectives begin second guessing everything, even doubting the innocence of those involved, including their own. Though it earned only average ratings in Korea, the series gained widespread critical praise and took home multiple prestigious awards. While not based on any real-life events, it's loosely inspired by the infamous Hwaseong serial murders in Korea.

‘Taehyung was so passionate': Award-winning director recalls how BTS' V got rid of IU's MV scene, cut his hair and enlisted the next day

BTS member Kim Taehyung has always had a knack for acting, and it's no secret. Back in the day, he kicked things off with the historical K-drama Hwarang alongside fellow Wooga Squad member Park Hyung Sik, and years later, stormed the MV scene with IU's Love Wins All. The K-pop idol then enlisted in the military and is now just days away from his comeback. At the Muju Film Festival on June 6, Concrete Utopia director Uhm Tae Hwa, who recently bagged the Best Director award, opened up about working with the star and said he'd love to team up with him again, even if it means creating an entirely new role just to fit him. Also read: BTS' V replies to fan's countdown post: 'You waited… now what?'; from solo concerts to FESTA and art exhibits, here's what's next for the K-pop stars While speaking to Editor-in-Chief Joo Sung Chul, Um Tae Hwa revealed they shot the entire music video in just two days. He recalled how the Winter Bear crooner filmed his entire scene while also helping the crew and the director himself, cut his hair right after, and left for the military the next day. During the conversation, the host asked the director if he was aware of Taehyung's comeback from the military, and Uhm said he was and had even sent him a personal message. The host then mentioned how fans have been urging the director to cast V in a movie, to which Uhm replied, 'If Taehyung were willing to do it, I'd be so grateful. I'd love to work with him—even if I had to make up a role just to ask him.' (Translated via Allkpop) He added, 'We only filmed for two days. He left the next day. That's how much he wanted to do it. He was very passionate. That's when I realised he had a real desire to act. I'm not joking—it would be amazing if we could work together again.' He replied that Taehyung was very involved on set and was never the kind of celebrity who just did things for the sake of doing them. Originally, the final scene had the two characters (IU and V) crowd-surfing in wedding dresses while singing. But the team was running out of time, and everyone was worried. Trying to shoot it was causing a lot of stress, yet the director wanted to keep the scene badly. 'As a director, I really wanted to film that scene. I thought it would enhance the emotional impact. So I kept trying to make it work until the very end.' That's when the singer came and spoke to him. 'He said, 'Instead of this, how about we film another, better scene?'' Uhm recalled. 'He talked me into it, and he was right; we didn't have enough time. If we had stuck with my idea, we might not have had time to film the other important scenes. Everyone, including the audience actors, was stressing over how to do that scene,' He continued. 'Then Taehyung turned to them and said, 'Everyone, I got rid of that scene!' And everyone cheered.' IU and BTS' V's post-apocalyptic dystopian saga Love Wins All dropped on January 24, 2024, as the lead single from IU's sixth Korean EP, The Winning. The song, and especially the music video, scored a perfect all-kill on South Korean music charts and was hailed as the MV of the season, even debuting at number 25 on the Billboard Global 200. V shot his scenes just a week before his mandatory military enlistment, viewing the project as a parting gift to ARMYs before heading off. In the MV, V and IU escape from a cube-like object in their wedding dresses. IU's character is shown with a hearing impairment, communicating with V through sign language, while V's character is visually impaired.

Disney World closes 3 iconic attractions, what to know as fans call it ‘largest mistake in the company's history'

Disney World has left fans heartbroken after announcing the closure of three of its most iconic attractions: Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat. The popular destinations will shutter on July 7 and will be replaced by a new attraction based on the Disney and Pixar 'Cars' universe – Piston Peak National Park. 'Imagine an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers,' the Disney Parks Blog earlier said. 'While fictional, Piston Peak is inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and the history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks.' Disney World visitors, however, have expressed their shock and unhappiness at the closure of the three spots. All of these have been open to the public for decades. In an X post announcing the change, a user wrote, 'Disney says the new additions represent the largest transformation in Magic Kingdom's history.' Fans fumed in the comment section, with one user saying, 'Dont equate transformation with destruction'. 'Canceling my trip in October and sadly, will never visit that park again,' one user wrote, while another said, 'Not coincidentally, it also represents the largest mistake in the company's history…' One wrote, :Strongly dislike. Disney has plenty of land. Stop demolishing old stuff. Just add more and refurbish old.' 'If the river along Frontierland is kept then I might be ok with this, especially if the Pacific Northwest theming on the other bank is well done. Now only if the riverboat could remain there in some way,' one user wrote. 'This is an abomination and a real disservice to all those who booked summer trips hoping to enjoy all this one more time. Talk about timing. Thankful we enjoyed it recently,' another wrote. 'Just over a month is *not* enough to allow people to say goodbye to the atmosphere of an entire third of the park. Messy,' wrote one user, while commented, 'I can't believe they're really going through with this. This is such a gut punch to me due to all the memories of watching Wishes and HEA out on the Splash/Tiana boardwalk.'
