After 104 years UK's longest train route is cancelled for ever
With a muted fanfare the UK's longest train rolled out of Aberdeen on Friday morning for its final sojourn down to Penzance, ending a service that connected both ends of the country for more than 100 years.
The 8.20am CrossCountry train took 13 hours and 20 minutes, with stops at 35 stations along the way, to cover the 774-mile route. Passengers spent more than two hours of the journey in the stations.
The service, which was launched in 1921, headed south through York, Bristol, Taunton and Truro on its way past some of the country's finest landscapes, and arrived in Penzance at 9.31pm.
Michael Cleaver, an enthusiast, was on board. 'It's the last train ever and it's such a long route. It's a route I've

Primark shoppers are raging at new change they've made at the tills shouting ‘they break before you get home already'
PRIMARK'S brown paper shopping bags are instantly recognisable on the high street. But as of last month, the retailer starting charging customers for them for the first time - and shoppers have been sharing their frustrations online. 4 4 From May 12, Primark said it would require customers to pay 15p for their paper bags, regardless of whether they were small, medium, or large. Up until that point, they had been completely free and aimed to be an environmentally-friendly alternative to plastic bags. However, they haven't gone down well with all customers. TikTok user Aamina - who posts under @aamina___ - uploaded a video saying: "Why is Primark now charging for paper bags? 'The bag charge was originally introduced to reduce plastic bag waste and shoppers were given bags for life. 'Now they are charging for one use paper bags that break by the time you get home. 'Is this just a money making scheme?' When it brought in the change, Primark said: 'Got a reuseable bag? Bring it along next time you visit our stores. 'Why the change? Research shows that introducing bag charges reduces the number of new bags customers use. 'It's a simple step that encourages all of us to think twice about our use.' They explained that they use 'use thousands of paper bags every day' and while the paper bags are made from '100% recycled and recyclable materials ', they are 'always looking for ways to cut down on single-use waste.' Bargain hunters are legging it to Primark to nab new travel rucksack - it's only £16 & there's 4 colours to choose from While they advised customers to bring their own reusable bags, they added: 'If you forget to bring a bag, we've got you covered in-store with reusable shopping bags in a variety of sizes, starting from just 80p. 'You'll spot them at the tills in white or our signature brown style, both made from sturdy materials designed to withstand your shopping trips. 'If you're after a more stylish option, we stock canvas tote bags all year round.' 4 'WALKING ADVERT' Responding the TikTok video, people were quick to share their thoughts on Primark charging for bags. One said: 'You're paying for a walking advert for their shop.' A second added: 'They wanna charge for a bag that'll break before I turn around.' However, one person defended Primark for the new charge. They said: 'Pretty obvious isn't it?? Sure a paper bag is miles better than a plastic bag, but it's still pretty much single use. We should all be bringing our own bags when we go shopping!' Another shared: 'People realise shops have to buy the bags in, it's still a product at the end of the day.' Why Primark is great for looking expensive on a budget By Clemmie Feildsend, Fabulous Fashion Editor AS someone who's no stranger to grabbing a last-minute outfit from Primark for a night out, it's about time that celebrities started catching on too. For as long as I've been heading out, Primark has been my go-to for those 'I have nothing to wear' moments, rushing in at the last minute to find something perfect. And I'm definitely not alone - on any Friday or Saturday night, you'll find plenty of shoppers doing the same thing, right before closing time. But no matter what, Primark always delivers. Now, Rita Ora is leading the charge, showing that you can snag a designer-worthy look without spending a fortune at high-end stores. While Rita's not rushing in last minute for a red carpet outfit, she's proving you can achieve the same high-impact style for much less. Looking stunning in her tailored suit alongside her mum Vera, Rita fit right in among the other A-listers dripping in Prada, Dior, and Victoria Beckham - if anything, she looked even better than some of the guests at The Fashion Awards. With Myleene Klass and Roxy Horner already jumping on the Primark bandwagon, I'm sure more stars will be following suit soon enough.

Tyson Fury among THOUSANDS of travellers at Appleby as horse fair kicks off TODAY – with locals locking down village
BOXER Tyson Fury has been spotted making his way to the historic Appleby Horse Fair as the annual event kicks off today. The Gypsy King, 36, will join tens of thousands of visitors who have flooded into the rural village of Appleby-in-Westmoorland, Cumbria, ahead of the festivities. 9 9 9 He was spotted travelling by horse-drawn cart through Knutsford, Cheshire, as he makes his way to the fair. Locals are bracing for chaos as hundreds of campervans and horse-drawn carriages descended upon their rural town for the annual event. Cumbria Police confirmed 30 people had already arrested in the general area as part of an operation ahead of the fair. The six-day event typically features traditional music, dancing, horse riding, market stalls and horse sales. Traffic in the area ground to a standstill as visitors from the gypsy, roma and travelling community lined the streets. Huge queues started forming along the roads as they waited to enter the campsites. Families and their horses normally descend from miles away to attend the 340-year-old fair. It falls on the first weekend of June and is recognised as the largest of its kind in Europe. Horsemen and women have been seen riding their horses in the nearby River Eden as part of a long-held tradition. The annual gathering dates back to 1685 and is under the protection of a charter granted by James II. 9 9 By the 1900s it had evolved into an event for Gypsies and Travellers. There remains a huge police presence in the area, with officers on standby ahead of potential chaos and violence. Narrow country lanes leading to the village have been bursting with horses and caravans in the build-up to the traveller meet-up. In 2020, the fair was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, but huge crowds have returned to the event in recent years. Seven people were arrested at the 2021 meet-up, but the chaos didn't dampen spirits for the hundreds at the historical celebration. Some locals have closed down their pubs and services in protest. Fed-up residents living in the neighbouring village of Gargrave even drew up battle plan in preparation. They have complained of a spike in crime and anti-social behaviour with human excrement found in bushes, trees hacked down and scorch marks found on the village greens. Last year, more than 60 pick-up trucks and horse-drawn caravans descended on the village, with loud generators running throughout the night. 9 9 9

Fish and chips, cream tea and hot doughnuts voted the most popular treats for Brits on holiday
A COASTAL town was treated to free chips with a twist - the chippy was powered by an electric car. In the aptly named Kent town of Deal, National Fish and Chip Day was celebrated with 300 portions of chips given away, as well as a limited run of battered fish. 1 But it wasn't your ordinary chip shop, with the chippy being powered by two electric cars and fronted by TikTok's 'Chip Shop Diva', Destiny Harold. The Dacia Spring, which its makers say is the cheapest electric vehicle currently on the market, was the power behind the frying, in partnership with local chippy, The Blue Mermaid Fish Bar. It comes after a poll of 2,000 adults found fish and chips is the most popular treat on a British holiday, as well as cream tea and hot doughnuts. Others to feature in the top 20 list include Mr Whippy ice cream, Cornish pasties and mussels. Quintessentially British foods, such as fish finger sandwiches, strawberries and cream and a pie and mash also featured in the ranking. A spokesperson for car brand Dacia said: 'It was fun treating passers-by today and showing the power of our electric car, Spring, using its vehicle to load technology, which allows you to power external devices off the car's battery. 'It's no surprise we have a national day dedicated to the iconic meal that is fish and chips and the study shows just how much we love it and associate it with holidays by the seaside. 'Playing on the phrase 'cheap as chips' in line with our affordable car and being in the appropriately named Deal, was a great way to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day.' The research also found 41% of adults describe such foods as nostalgic, while 45% feel satisfied after eating them. When ordering a classic fish and chips, cod (48%) and haddock (19%) were the most popular choices, but 69% simply order a portion of chips. It also emerged 44% believe fish and chips is the 'food of the people' and 39% said class doesn't impact how people eat it. While 46% feel there is something nostalgic about eating the British staple with a wooden fork, which 33% typically do, although 38% opt to eat it by hand. Food psychologist, James Cornish, said: 'There are few things that unite the British public quite like fish and chips. 'Golden, salty, comforting, and steeped in history, this timeless dish is more than a meal - it's a national treasure. 'Loved across generations, social classes, and regions, it's one of those rare things that truly brings us together. 'There's a certain kind of magic in fish and chips - a simple meal that somehow carries the weight of memory, comfort, and delight. 'Maybe it's because we don't expect too much from humble food, but our delight is excelled through the delivering of more than we expected.' 1. Fish and chips 2. Mr. Whippy ice cream 3. Cream tea 4.
