Geek Tyrant16-05-2025

A fun second trailer has been released for the upcoming animated/live-action hybrid movie, Smurfs , featuring an all-star cast led by Rihanna as Smurfette.
The movie is directed by Chris Miller ( Shrek the Third , Puss in Boots ), from a screenplay written by Pam Brady ( South Park , The Loop , Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken ), based on the characters and works of Peyo.
The film's synopsis reads: "To save their world, they must come to ours." When Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.'
The movie also stars James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, with Kurt Russell and John Goodman as Papa Smurf.
This looks cheesy, but like something you could take your younger kids to this summer to beat the heat. Check out the trailer below, and watch Smurfs in theatres on July 18th.

Rihanna Earns Her First New Hit In Almost A Decade On One Chart

Rihanna's 'A Friend of Mine' debuts at No. 19 on the U.K.'s Official Dance Singles chart, marking ... More her first new dance hit in nearly a decade. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 10: Rihanna arrives at the Rihanna x Fenty Hair Los Angeles Launch Party at Nya Studios on June 10, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Kayla Oaddams/WireImage) Throughout her career, Rihanna has explored multiple genres of music, and she has found incredible commercial success in pretty much every style she's recorded. At this point, she claims enough hits in R&B, pop, and electronic dance fields to outpace some of the biggest stars who have stuck solely to those individual fields. The superstar scores a new dance win in the United Kingdom this week with 'Friend of Mine,' her latest tune, which was written and recorded for the upcoming animated Smurfs movie. While it doesn't break into the top 10, 'Friend of Mine' does manage to launch at No. 19 on the Official Dance Singles chart in the U.K. That's a bit disappointing, as Rihanna remains one of the biggest musical stars in the world, and anticipation for new music from her is always high. The pop icon doesn't even manage the top debut of the frame. 'Friend of Mine' scores the third-highest start of the period, behind 'Baller' by Abor and Tynna at No. 7 and 'The Glen' from Levi Heron, which opens at No. 15. Rihanna is typically a fixture on the Official Dance Singles chart, but it has been many years since she earned a new hit on the genre-specific tally. 'Friend of Mine' marks her first debut on the list in just under a decade. She last arrived with a new track in May 2016 when she joined Calvin Harris on 'This Is What You Came For.' That tune has spent 151 weeks somewhere on the roster — six of which have been at No. 1. As it opens at No. 19, 'Friend of Mine' also becomes Rihanna's second-lowest-charting career placement on the Official Dance Singles roster. She has only sent seven tunes to the list, and just one, 'Jump,' has stalled in a lower position. That track has thus far spent only two frames somewhere on the ranking, and has climbed no higher than No. 25. All of Rihanna's other hits have reached the top 10, and most have spent time at No. 1. Rihanna doubles up on the Official Dance Singles chart this frame as 'Friend of Mine' joins 'We Found Love,' another collaboration with Calvin Harris. That track dips from No. 24 to No. 37 as it reaches 233 frames somewhere on the tally.

Diddy Trial: Who Is ‘Mia,' the Anonymous Witness Accusing Sean Combs of Sexual Assault and Violence?

On Thursday, an anonymous former employee of Sean 'Diddy' Combs took the stand in his sex trafficking trial, accusing him of sexual assault and violence. The witness, testifying under the pseudonym 'Mia,' worked as a personal assistant and then executive for Combs from 2009 to 2017. Her real identity was revealed to the jury as an image of her passport was shown under seal. (Variety will refrain from describing her physical appearance as to respect the witness' anonymity.) More from Variety Weekend Update Slams Diddy's Trial, Elon Musk 'Pulling Out' of DOGE and Colin Jost's Extreme Doll Obsession 'South Park' Season 27 Sets July Premiere and Takes Aim at Diddy, Ketamine and a War Against Canada 'SNL' Weekend Update Mocks Diddy, Will Smith's New Album and the Viral Morning Routine Video Mia described her time working under Combs as 'chaotic' and 'toxic.' Being his assistant was a relentless job with an initial salary of $50,000. Mia said she once worked five days straight without sleep, and used the drug Adderall to stay awake. Looking down and speaking in a nervous, soft voice, Mia said Combs 'sexually assaulted me' on multiple occasions. At the beginning of the trial, prosecutors previewed that Mia would testify that Combs forced her to perform oral sex and once entered 'her bed to penetrate her against her will.' Mia became close friends with Combs' then-girlfriend Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura, describing their relationship as 'like sisters.' She said Combs exerted control over nearly every aspect of Ventura's life and career, including how her nails looked and what music she was allowed to put out. He paid for Ventura's homes and cars and would take them away from her 'when he was upset' or 'couldn't get her on the phone,' Mia testified. Asked about whether she witnessed any violence in Combs and Ventura's relationship, Mia stuttered and took heavy breaths. 'I've seen him attack her, I've seen him throw her on the ground, I've seen him crack her head open. I've seen him chase her,' she said. On one occasion that has been previously referenced in the trial, Mia was hanging out with Ventura and her stylist, Deonte Nash, when an 'irate' Combs knocked on the door, came into Ventura's apartment and allegedly began beating her. Mia and Nash jumped on Combs to try to stop him, and Combs 'threw me against a wall so quick and so easily,' Mia said. 'I realized we were in real danger.' Mia said she watched Combs pick up Ventura, and 'he slammed her head into the corner of the bed.' Ventura's head began gushing blood and she developed a scar on her forehead. Mia said that in the moment, she feared that Combs 'would kill her.' Mia said Combs then demanded that she call one of his assistants and tell her that Ventura 'was drunk and hit her head,' and that she needed to see a doctor immediately. During these fits of rage, Combs' eyes would 'turn black' and 'it was like he was looking through me,' Mia said. On another occasion, around 2011 or 2012, Mia and Ventura decided to go to a party in Los Angeles hosted by the artist Prince, going against Combs' instructions that they stay in. At the party, Mia and Ventura were dancing and 'having fun,' when Combs suddenly entered and made eye contact with Mia. 'Oh crap,' she thought. To avoid Combs, Mia said she and Ventura ran out of the house and tried to hide in the bushes, but Combs 'caught' Ventura and 'had her on the ground.' 'He started to attack her, but Prince's security swiftly intervened,' she recalled. The next day, Mia was informed that she had been suspended without pay. 'Puff said I was being insubordinate,' she said. Mia's testimony matches up with many of the events described by Ventura, Nash and other witnesses. Combs is not accused of sex trafficking Mia. Rather, her testimony that Combs subjected her to forced labor — including sexual activity — through violence and threats, relates to the racketeering charge. Combs is accused of running a criminal enterprise, with security guards and other employees who allegedly helped him commit crimes and cover them up for decades. If convicted, Combs could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Best of Variety 'Harry Potter' TV Show Cast Guide: Who's Who in Hogwarts? Nick Kroll Reveals the ‘Sick Little D—' Scene in ‘Big Mouth' That Netflix Asked to Be Cut: ‘It's the Grossest Thing'

Just when you think coming-of-age animated series 'Big Mouth' on Netflix couldn't be any raunchier, co-creator and star Nick Kroll reveals the time that he and his cohorts realized they probably went too far. 'Maury [Kroll] was allowed to have sex with the decapitated skull of Garrison Keillor, and this was before Keillor went down, mind you, and [Netflix] still let that go,' Kroll told me Thursday at the show's series finale premiere at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. (Minnesota Public Radio cut ties with Keillor in 2017 after an investigation found he had engaged in dozens of sexually inappropriate incidents over many years.) 'It's the grossest thing. Netflix was like, 'Could you maybe…' and we were like, 'Yeah, we saw.'' The eighth and final season of 'Big Mouth' premieres on Netflix on May 26. Also hitting the red carpet on Thursday were Ayo Edebiri, Jason Mantzoukas, Jessi Klein, Richard Kind, Steve Buscemi, Whitmer Thomas, Jack McBrayer, John Gemberling and co-creators and executive producers Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett. The after-party included penis-shaped grilled cheese sandwiches. Andrew Rannells co-stars on 'Big Mouth' as gay bully Matthew. 'I told Nick Kroll this and he was very surprised,' Rannells said. 'When Nick asked me to do this, he was like, 'You're going to play a gay bully and I was like, 'What am I going to do for this voice? What is a gay bully going to sound like?' I decided that my gay bully voice was going to be a young Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones.' Next up for Kroll is a part in the new 'Smurfs' movie. He told me he's playing a 'bad guy wizard' who is part of villain Gargamel's (JP Karliak) 'crew' but 'genuinely' doesn't know his character's name. The film stars Rihanna as Smurfette. Papa Smurf is played by John Goodman with Amy Sedaris as Mama Smurf. Rounding out the cast are Sandra Oh, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Dan Levy, Natasha Lyonne, Octavia Spencer, James Corden, Kurt Russell, Maya Erskine, Alex Winter, Xolo Maridueña, Billie Lourd and Marshmello. Kroll joked that he produced Rihanna's music for the movie after working on Rihanna's long-awaited next album. 'They threw me a bone and were like, 'Wanna do some lines?' [in 'Smurfs'],' Kroll cracked. 'I said, 'I'd love to.''
