Displaced Sudanese stream home from Egypt after army retakes Khartoum
They are among thousands of displaced Sudanese streaming back home from Egypt into territory retaken by the Sudanese armed forces from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary in Khartoum and its environs since the start of this year.
"I miss every corner of Sudan, really. I'm very happy that I'm going back," one of the returnees, Malaz Atef, told Reuters.
The families were waiting to board a free train to the southern Egyptian city of Aswan, from where they would take buses to the Sudanese capital Khartoum. A couple of young girls wore hats reading, "Thank you, Egypt" in Arabic.
Over 4 million Sudanese fled to neighbouring countries -- including more than 1.5 million to Egypt -- after war broke out between the army and the RSF in April 2023, according to figures from the International Organisation for Migration, or IOM.
Since the start of this year, over 190,000 people have crossed the border from Egypt into Sudan, more than five times the number who returned in all of 2024, an IOM report said earlier this month.
Sudan's ambassador to Egypt, Emad el-Din Adawy, who visited the station on Monday, said the returns marked "an important stage for reconstruction and bringing back stability."
Despite the relative calm in the capital, fighting between the RSF and the army is still raging in the central Kordofan region and al-Fashir in Darfur in the west.
The war, triggered by a dispute over a transition to civilian rule between the army and the RSF, has displaced over 12 million people and pushed half the population into acute hunger, according to the United Nations.
Some Sudanese in Egypt have complained of difficulty finding jobs and discrimination, and Egypt has deported thousands of refugees it says entered illegally. Thousands of others have fled onwards to Libya.
The weekly trains from Cairo to help Sudanese to return home voluntarily have been financed by Sudanese businessmen, according to Adawy.
The Sudanese who have gone back so far have mostly headed to Khartoum, as well as to Sennar and El Gezira states to the capital's south, according to the IOM.

Lutnick said in an interview for CNBC's talk program 'Squawk Box' that President Donald Trump has agreed to set zero tariffs for those natural resources that are not grown in the U.S. in the trade deals he has closed, including the ones with Indonesia and the European Union. "If you grow something and we don't grow it, that can come in for zero, so if we do a deal with a country that grows mangos, pineapple, then they can come in without a tariff, because coffee and cocoa will be other examples of natural resources," Lutnick said. "So Europe came in with cork, for example. That can come in to the U.S. without a tariff," he said. A part of the text of the 'Agreement on Reciprocal Trade between the United States and Indonesia' that was published last week by the White House cites natural resources. It says that the U.S. "may also identify certain commodities that are not naturally available or domestically produced in the United States for a further reduction in the reciprocal tariff rate". Indonesia agreed with a tariff of 19% to sell its products in the U.S., but could eventually have zero tariff for its coffee, cocoa, or other tropical products. Lutnick however did not comment on the situation of tropical products coming from countries that still do not have a deal with the U.S., such as Brazil. Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian products from August 1 in a move that also involves politics, as the U.S. President complained about the treatment Brazilian courts are giving to former Brazilian president and his ally Jair Bolsonaro. Brazil supplies a third of the coffee used in the U.S., the world's largest drinker of the beverage, and that trade could be heavily impacted if tariffs are indeed imposed. Brent crude futures rose 14 cents, or 0.19%, to $72.65 a barrel by 0048 GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed 2 cents, or 0.03%, to $69.23 a barrel. Both contracts had settled at their highest since June 20 on Tuesday. On Tuesday, Trump said he would start imposing measures on Russia, including 100% secondary tariffs on its trading partners, if it did not make progress on ending the war within 10-12 days, moving up an earlier 50-day deadline. "Effective secondary 100% tariffs would lead to a dramatic shift in the oil market. A number of key buyers of Russian oil would likely be reluctant to continue purchases, particularly large U.S. trading partners," ING analysts said in a note. "While this gives OPEC+ room to start unwinding additional tranches of supply cuts, it would still leave the market in deficit under a worst-case scenario."
