Showcause notices over inaction on tree felling

Time of Indiaa day ago
New Delhi:
National Green Tribunal
(NGT) has issued showcause notices to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and the Forest Department for failing to act on the illegal cutting of a fully-grown tree in a public park in DDA Market No.
3 in Y-Block, Mangolpuri, northwest Delhi.
The notices were issued after a local resident filed a plea seeking enforcement of the tribunal's earlier order from March 4, 2024. The tribunal earlier directed the tree officer and DPCC to act and submit reports. However, as no compliance was made, the NGT has now issued notices and directed the applicant to serve notice and file an affidavit of service, which involves submitting a report on the ground situation.
In the latest order dated July 1, the tribunal, led by chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, stated: "The applicant is seeking action on our earlier directions regarding the illegal felling of a tree in Mangolpuri by the Horticulture Department of MCD."

"Forest Department was supposed to ensure the report was filed promptly and the DPCC was to take necessary action. If required, the matter would be brought back before the bench," the tribunal had earlier stated.
However, the applicant's counsel told the bench that no action has been taken so far. Acknowledging this, the tribunal said: "As no steps have been taken by the Forest Department, we are now issuing a notice to them. The applicant must serve the notice and file proof of service before the next hearing."
The NGT has now asked for an affidavit from the applicant detailing the current condition at the site.

Illegal sand mining in Bokaro continues despite NGT ban

Bokaro: Though the National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a complete ban on sand mining during the monsoon (June 10 to Oct 15), illegal sand extraction continues unabated in Bokaro district, especially at Bhathua Ghat of the Damodar river under Harla police station. While the mining department appears proactive on paper, its field presence is virtually invisible where violations are rampant. Hundreds of tractors operate daily at Bhathua and Pindrajoda Ijri river ghats, extracting and transporting sand in broad daylight and even late at night. However, the mining department's focus appears limited to token action at other sites like Balidih, Sector 12, and Pindrajora, where one or two vehicles are seized weekly. In the past 27 days (June 10 to July 7), nine tractors were seized, and an FIR was filed against "unknown" individuals. Locals allege that while deputy commissioner of Bokaro, Ajay Nath Jha, continues to issue instructions and warnings, the mining department merely took harsh steps to curb the unlawful business of sands. Advocate Bhagwan Sahu, a resident of Bhathua village, said, "Sand is being mined from the Damodar river even at 2 am. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pamiętasz ją? " In the July 3 district mining task force (DMFT) meeting, mining officer (DMO) Ravi Kumar Singh shared updates on coal seizures and penalties but avoided details on sand mining. According to the press note, 31 vehicles carrying coal, sand, and stones were seized, with 12 FIRs registered and fines totalling Rs 2.76 lakh collected in the past 25 days. Yet, the most critical issue, illegal sand mining, received low attention. There are three legal storage sites available for regulated sand purchase by Jharkhand State Mineral Development Corporation Limited (JSMDCL) in Khetko (Petarwar), Mahasha Enterprises in Gullibhitha (Chandankiyari), and Jai Mata Di Enterprises in Bondhidih (Jaridih). But as long as field enforcement remains lax, illegal sand mining and transportation continue to outpace legal supply, undermining both the environment and governance. Jha directed strict action against illegal coal mining following a fatal mine collapse in Ramgarh on July 5 that killed one person and trapped others. Highlighting the risks near 13 abandoned coal projects in Bokaro, he ordered circle officers and police to identify and act against illegal sites, arrest mafias, and seize equipment. Regular patrolling, public awareness campaigns, and fencing of closed mines were mandated. He stressed monthly progress reports and warned that illegal mining endangers lives, damages resources, and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Muharram: Clash during Tazia procession, 4 hurt

Varanasi: At least four persons suffered injuries when two groups clashed over snapping of electric wires during a Muharram procession in Parsiya village under Revati police station of Ballia district. The clash occurred when the Muharram procession was returning from graveyard. Ballia superintendent of police Omvir Singh said on Monday that apart from attacking one another with sticks and bamboos, some assailants also opened fire. Of the four persons who suffered injuries in this clash, two sustained bullet injuries and were referred to Varanasi. Later, sub-inspector Jitendra Pandey and constable Anand Kumar, who were accompanying the procession, were suspended. Singh added that the Revati station in-charge Prashant Kumar also failed to provide proper oversight and did not inform any senior officers or the local CO which might have prevented the incident. Consequently, he was attached to Police Lines. The SP added that after lodging a report under relevant sections, a detailed investigation is being conducted by the CO (Sadar). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... This led to a dispute between people taking part in the Tazia procession and locals. The cops escorting the procession intervened to resolve it, allowing the Tazia to reach its destination. However, when the participants of the Tazia procession were returning, they clashed with locals gathered along the road in Parsiya.

Accountant at city school booked for 1.4 crore fraud

Mumbai: An FIR has been registered against the deputy manager (accounts) working with a prominent chain of schools across the country for misappropriating school funds up to Rs 1.4 crore. The FIR was registered at Bangur Nagar police station on Sunday on the basis of a statement given by the head of accounts working with the group of schools. According to the FIR, the accounts team keeps track of fees paid by students for academics, sports, canteen, bus service etc. If a student leaves the school or quits any activity in the middle of the term, then the fee is refunded to the bank account of the parent proportionately. Forty-five suspicious payments had been made to the bank accounts of Ms Shaikh, one Ms Kewath and the deputy manager himself — totalling Rs 1.44 crore. Earlier, the deputy manager used to enjoy certain powers as the school trusted him — his computer could not be accessed by anyone else nor could any staffer make changes to the payment files created by him. After the misappropriation of funds came to light, the school scrutinised the list put together by the junior accountant for initiating refunds, but found no mention of individuals like Shaikh or Kewath. It was then concluded that the deputy manager had created payment files for his own benefit in the names of these individuals. A police complaint was then registered.
