Muharram: Clash during Tazia procession, 4 hurt

Time of India5 days ago
Varanasi: At least four persons suffered injuries when two groups clashed over snapping of electric wires during a Muharram procession in Parsiya village under Revati police station of Ballia district.
The clash occurred when the Muharram procession was returning from graveyard.
Ballia superintendent of police Omvir Singh said on Monday that apart from attacking one another with sticks and bamboos, some assailants also opened fire. Of the four persons who suffered injuries in this clash, two sustained bullet injuries and were referred to Varanasi.
Later, sub-inspector Jitendra Pandey and constable Anand Kumar, who were accompanying the procession, were suspended.
Singh added that the Revati station in-charge Prashant Kumar also failed to provide proper oversight and did not inform any senior officers or the local CO which might have prevented the incident. Consequently, he was attached to Police Lines. The SP added that after lodging a report under relevant sections, a detailed investigation is being conducted by the CO (Sadar).

The accused will be arrested soon, he added.
Earlier, when a Tazia procession was passing through Parsiya village towards Karbala in Revati town, it came into contact with low-hanging electric wires which led to some wires being damaged in front of Sadhu Yadav's house. This led to a dispute between people taking part in the Tazia procession and locals. The cops escorting the procession intervened to resolve it, allowing the Tazia to reach its destination.
However, when the participants of the Tazia procession were returning, they clashed with locals gathered along the road in Parsiya.

‘She wasn't raped, just fell from an auto': Kolkata top B-School 'rape' FIR turns murky; father says police 'forced' daughter to file complaint

A 24-year-old psychologist accused a management student in Kolkata of rape, leading to his arrest. However, in a surprising turn, the woman's father later claimed that nothing happened and alleged that police pressured his daughter to file the complaint. KOLKATA: A 24-year-old woman lodged a rape complaint against a 2nd-year student of one of India's premier management institutes on Friday evening, leading to the latter's arrest. Barely 12 hours later, however, the woman's father denied 'anything had happened' and suggested cops had 'made' his daughter file the complaint, turning on its head another seemingly openand-shut case of campus rape. Cops picked up Paramanand Toppannawar, a resident of Balikot in Karnataka, from the institute's campus on the southern fringes of the city post-midnight after the survivor lodged a complaint at Haridevpur police station late on Friday. 'We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness and are fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities, who are currently conducting an investigation,' the institute said in a press statement. The complaint registered by the woman, a psychologist, on Friday evening said the two had first connected online and Toppannawar had called her to the institute campus for acounselling session (for himself). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like So sánh mức trượt giá: Hợp đồng tương lai (CFD) Bitcoin vs Ethereum IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo According to her complaint, the first red flag — which she realised later — came when she entered the campus at 11.45 am but was 'not allowed' to register her name in the visitors' log. (Institute insiders, however, said this was not true.) Once inside the campus gate, Toppannawar led her to his room at the men's hostel citing privacy concerns. It was there that she was offered a slice of pizza and a drink and she began feeling 'dizzy' almost as soon as she finished the drink, cops said quoting from her complaint. She then told Toppannawar that she wanted to use the washroom (just outside his room) because she felt like throwing up but was not allowed; Toppannawar claimed it would be a problem for him if other students spotted him with a woman. Doing everything as per law but family stonewalling investigation, say police The woman wrote in her complaint, 'He suddenly grabbed my hair during our conversation. I slapped him in defence but he then grabbed my neck and hand. I do not remember anything after that — where I was or what I was doing —but can recall him touching me inappropriately, grabbing my waist and pulling down my pants. He sexually assaulted me. I found myself on his bed when I regained my senses.' She said she somehow pulled herself together and managed to leave the campus, following which she contacted a friend who asked her to immediately report the matter to the police. She first went to Thakurpukur police station from where where she was guided to Haridevpur, where the complaint was registered. The entire case, however, was turned on its head barely 12 hours after the woman registered the FIR. Her father told several television channels — with his back to the cameras — that no one tortured her daughter and that she had only suffered some injuries after falling off an autorickshaw. 'My daughter called me around 9.40 pm to say she had hurt herself after falling from an auto. Haridevpur cops rescued her and took her to SSKM Hospital. Cops told me my daughter had been abused and one person had been arrested but my daughter told me nothing of this sort had happened. Cops told her to say certain things during the medical examination that she did not say,' he added. 'She has no connection with the arrested person. I do not know where Haridevpur cops found her. My daughter said the police made her write the complaint,' he said in a statement filled with gaps. Cops, taken aback by this development, said they acted only after the woman (a psychologist) lodged a complaint and were doing everything according to law. 'Our immediate challenge is to prove the sequence of events,' an investigator said. 'We have repeatedly gone to the woman's home but the family is stonewalling us. They have not given us her clothes and mobile — all crucial pieces of evidence — and are going on telling us that the woman is sleeping,' a senior official said. Officials started a case under BNS Sections 64 (rape) and 123 (causing hurt by means of poison or other harmful substances with intent to commit another offence) and then added BNS Sections of 127(2) (wrongful confinement), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 76 (assault or use of criminal force on a woman with intent to disrobe her). State counsel Sourin Ghosal asked the court for Toppannawar's police custody, claiming he was 'influential' and could destroy evidence; he was also not cooperating with the probe. 'It is an ideal case of matching merit with mismatching mental health (sic). He may be meritorious but the crime he has committed speaks of his mentality,' Ghosal said. Defence counsel Subrata Sardar said the complaint itself was 'fishy'. 'The woman was on the campus from 11.45 am to 8.30 pm. But the complaint was lodged at 8.30 pm at a police station 4.5 km away. How is it possible?' he asked. Mother of rape accused Paramanand Mahaveer Toppannawar who reached Kolkata from Karnataka on Saturday said: 'My son is innocent. He has come so far to study. He will never do such a dirty thing,' she said. 'We received a call from his friend around 11 pm. He told us that my son has been arrested and he didn't know the reason... We have no clue why our son has been arrested... We want to meet our son and talk to him... He was in the final year of his college. .. We do not know anything here in Kolkata — where the police station is or where the court is. All we know is that our son is innocent.' (The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)

Offseason trouble returns for Browns as Quinshon Judkins arrested with domestic violence charge

Cleveland Browns rookie running back Quinshon Judkins was arrested in Broward County, Florida, just days before the start of his first NFL training camp. The 36th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft faces charges of battery and domestic violence. According to public records, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department took Judkins into custody early Saturday morning, July 12. The official charge, as listed by the Broward County Sheriff's Office, is 'touch or strike/battery/domestic violence.' He remains in custody as of now. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Undo #Browns rookie RB Quinshon Judkins appears to have been arrested in Broward County early Saturday morning. A standout at both Ole Miss and Ohio State, Judkins had a 1,000-yard rushing season with the Buckeyes last year and played a key role in their national championship run. His arrest comes at a critical time, with Browns rookies scheduled to report for minicamp on July 18. The incident not only casts doubt over his immediate availability but could also trigger action under the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy, which applies even before a player signs a contract. Judkins is also one of several second-round picks yet to sign their rookie contracts. The delay is reportedly tied to a broader standoff involving guaranteed money for players selected in the second round. Only two of the 32 second-round picks have signed deals so far. Another offseason trouble for the Browns This marks the second consecutive offseason in which a Browns rookie has been arrested on domestic violence charges before playing a game. Last year, it was defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr., also a second-round selection. With Judkins' future unclear, the Browns may now lean more heavily on fourth-round pick Dylan Sampson to carry the load in training camp and potentially the regular season. No court date has been set in Judkins' case, and the Browns have not issued a public statement yet.

Trump defends Attorney General Pam Bondi amid backlash over Epstein files

U.S. President Donald Trump defended Attorney General Pam Bondi on Saturday amid backlash against her from some of Trump's supporters over how the Justice Department handled the investigation into the death of accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged clientele. Trump said "nobody cares about" Epstein, and that more time or energy must not be wasted on his case, as he tried to unite his base of supporters in a nearly 400-word post on Truth Social. "What's going on with my "boys" and, in some cases, "gals?" They're all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! We're on one Team, MAGA, and I don't like what's happening," Trump said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Keur Massar: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo In a joint memo released on Monday, the FBI and Justice Department said there was no evidence to support a number of long-held conspiracy theories about Epstein's death in federal custody in 2019 and his alleged clientele. Conservative influencers from Laura Loomer to Elon Musk have criticized Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel for their findings, which came months after Bondi pledged to reveal major revelations about Epstein, including "a lot of names" and "a lot of flight logs." Live Events U.S. media, including Fox News and NBC News, have reported that FBI deputy director Dan Bongino has clashed with Bondi over the issue and is considering stepping down. Patel and Bongino, a former conservative podcaster, both previously made statements before working at the FBI about a so-called client list and often suggested that the government was hiding information about Epstein from the American public. Monday's memo on Epstein concluded that after reviewing more than 300 gigabytes of data, there was "no incriminating client list" nor was there any evidence that Epstein may have blackmailed prominent people. The memo also confirmed prior findings by the FBI which concluded that Epstein died by suicide in his jail cell while awaiting trial, and not as a result of a criminal act such as murder. Epstein's death while imprisoned in New York's Metropolitan Correctional Center has ignited controversy for years. Expectations for key revelations in his case grew when, in February, Fox News asked Bondi whether the Justice Department would be releasing Epstein's client list, and she said, "It's sitting on my desk right now to review." On Tuesday at the White House, Bondi walked that comment back, telling reporters that she was referring to the entire Epstein "file" along with other files pertaining to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. "That's what I meant by that," she said.
