Why Americans are suddenly cooking at home again

Axios02-06-2025
Americans are cooking at home more often and targeting budget-friendly foods, according to The Campbell's Company.
Why it matters: The trend reported Monday by Campbell's — whose brands include its eponymous soup, Prego sauce and Snyder's pretzels — comes as restaurant chains like McDonald's have already flagged softness in spending from low- and middle-income consumers.
Driving the news:"Consumers are cooking at home at the highest levels since early 2020 and turning to our brands for value, quality, and convenience," Campbell's CEO Mick Beekhuizen said in a statement.
And home meal preparers are also "favoring ingredients that help stretch tighter food budgets," he added on the company's earnings call.
For Campbell's, the trend manifested itself in an unspecified increase in soup sales and an 5% decrease in organic sales of snacks.
What they're saying: "Consumers remain under significant financial pressure and given the price of eating out has gone up by so much it is not surprising many households are cutting back," GlobalData analyst Neil Saunders tells Axios in an email.
"Eating at home may not be as much fun, but it is more cost effective – even compared to fast food which, for a family, has become very expensive.
The impact: The number of low-income consumers visiting U.S. fast-food restaurants was down "nearly double digits" in the year's first three months compared to 2024, McDonald's CEO Christopher Kempczinski said recently.

America's Top Sandwich Spots, According to Reviews

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. August marks National Sandwich Month and Yelp, the online directory, has marked the occasion with a list of the top 100 sandwich shops in the United States. Why It Matters Sandwiches have long been a cornerstone in American culinary culture. According to U.S. Foods, people across the U.S. eat an estimated 300 million sandwiches every day. A survey of 2,000 Americans, commissioned in the fall of 2024 by lunch and deli meat brand Buddig and conducted by Talker Research, found that grilled cheese sandwiches were the favorite of 42 percent of people, with chicken sandwiches coming in at a close second for 40 percent. The crowd-sourced review site explained its methodology: "This is an all-time list of the Top 100 Sandwich Shops in the U.S. according to Yelp. We identified businesses in the sandwich category on Yelp, then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews." The list revealed multiple trends about sandwich consumption. Shops that specialize in the bánh mì, a Vietnamese specialty, appeared in multiple positions, as did vegan, veggie and gluten-free sandwich spots. Newsweek spoke with Owen Han, author of the cookbook Stacked: The Art of the Perfect Sandwich and culinary content creator, about the ranking. Han's sandwich videos have proved immensely popular over the years, and he regularly shares videos making sandwiches to TikTok, where he has more than 4 million followers. "The 2025 Yelp Top 100 Sandwich Shops list shows that America's sandwich culture is in a golden age of creativity and diversity," Han said by email. "The classic deli sub and the simple grilled cheese are still celebrated, but they now share the stage with globally inspired flavors, plant-based reinventions and elevated ingredient choices like artisanal breads, house-made sauces and seasonal produce." One feature of the list is transcending state loyalties, with Chicago-style sandwiches popular in Florida, Philly cheesesteaks proving to be a favorite in Texas, and New Orleans muffulettas popping up in Missouri. "Regional pride is strong," Han said. "A po'boy in Louisiana doesn't look anything like a bánh mì in California or a biscuit sandwich in Texas, yet customers are eager to cross flavor borders. Sandwiches have become both a comfort food and a culinary playground, reflecting the broader American dining trend toward authenticity, craft and storytelling. While all the trends matter, global influences are the most transformative for the future." "They expand the definition of what a sandwich can be," he said, adding that they "introducing new flavor profiles, cooking techniques and ingredient combinations to mainstream audiences. "This cross-pollination of ideas—a Cuban medianoche in Seattle, a tikka masala wrap in New York, a kimchi grilled cheese in L.A.—keeps the category evolving in exciting ways. Plant-based innovation is a close second, as it's not just a dietary niche anymore; it's becoming part of the default menu offering. Together, these two forces are pushing sandwiches from familiar lunch fare into a dynamic, chef-driven cuisine that resonates with both tradition and modern tastes." Trump's ‘big beautiful bill' makes Roth conversions more complicated — here's what to know

If you're eyeing a Roth conversion, President Donald Trump's "big beautiful bill" could make the strategy more complicated, according to financial experts. Roth conversions transfer pretax or nondeductible individual retirement account funds to a Roth IRA, which starts future tax-free growth. The trade-off is paying regular income taxes on the converted balance. Trump's new tax cuts could make Roth conversions more appealing for some investors, experts say. But incurring too much income could impact eligibility for certain tax breaks. More from Personal Finance:What to do with RMDs when you don't need the moneySocial Security COLA may be 2.7% in 2026: estimatesOlder student loan borrowers face high delinquency rates When weighing Roth conversions, you need to know the multi-year state and federal tax impact, said Judy Brown, a certified financial planner who works at SC&H Group in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore area. For example, if you're nearing Medicare age or already enrolled, boosting your earnings could increase income-related monthly adjustment amounts, or IRMAA, for Medicare Part B and Part D premiums. The strategy is "looking at a lot of different pieces, and figuring out the optimal place for each client," said Brown, who is also a certified public accountant. Roth conversions have always been about "tax bracket management," said CFP Patrick Huey, owner of Victory Independent Planning in Portland, Oregon. When making Roth conversions, advisors typically incur enough regular income to "fill up the lowest brackets," he said. Your federal brackets are based on each part of your "taxable income," which you calculate by subtracting the greater of the standard or itemized deductions from your adjusted gross income. Before Trump enacted the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, lower federal income tax brackets were scheduled to sunset after 2025, which would have made converted balances more expensive. Trump's legislation made the lower tax rates permanent, but several new tax breaks — deductions for older Americans, tipped workers and consumers with overtime pay and car loan interest — are temporary with varying earnings limits. These tax breaks, which are available from 2025 through 2028, could offer more room for Roth conversions before hitting the next tax bracket, experts say. Once these cuts expire, you could be "paying more for the exact same Roth conversion," said CFP Ashton Lawrence at Mariner Wealth Advisors in Greenville, South Carolina. While Trump's new tax cuts could make more space in the lower tax brackets, higher income from Roth conversions can impact eligibility, experts say. For example, the additional $6,000 deduction for older Americans starts to phase out, or get smaller, once modified adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 for single filers or $150,000 for married couples filing jointly. It probably still makes sense to convert funds at 22% or 24% tax rates now — and skip the $6,000 deduction — to avoid the 30% brackets for large pre-tax required withdrawals later, Brown said. Most retirees must take required minimum distributions, or RMDs, from pretax retirement accounts starting at age 73 or face an IRS penalty.
