Commuters burdened by tipping pressure even as auto fares soar in Bengaluru
Auto drivers and ride-hailing apps are openly bypassing fare rules. Commuters report that prices for short trips have nearly doubled since bike taxis went off the roads. Drivers frequently refuse to accept bookings unless a digital tip is added, while many demand extra cash after the ride, often citing vague reasons such as congestion or fuel costs.
A recent reality check by TOI found that a JP Nagar-Mysore Bank circle ride, typically costing Rs 150, now costs Rs 210 on apps.
Drivers refuse to accept the ride unless a tip of Rs 30 is added — after a 15-minute wait.

For regular commuters, it is a daily struggle. Harika KV, a 23-year-old intern, said: "Autos are taking a lot of time and only come if we pay tip. After this (bike taxi) ban, auto prices have gone up a lot, which is not at all pocket-friendly for me."
Several ride-hailing platforms list multiple extra charges, including service fees, congestion surcharges, and tips ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 100.

These amounts are often presented as optional, but end up being necessary in practice to secure a ride. Commuters also complain of a lack of transparency about whether these tips even reach the drivers.
Vinay M, a 27-year-old from Indiranagar, said: "Drivers often cancel bookings or ask me to pay offline. These days, they don't accept rides without a tip. Once, I had to pay double just to avoid being late for a meeting."
Prepaid auto stands near Metro stations have also become ineffective, with drivers refusing to follow the standard fare unless additional cash is offered. Even those willing to use the meter frequently demand Rs 30-60 extra at the end of the trip.
Arpita Arun, a 24-year-old MBBS student who commutes from Rajajinagar to Mysuru Road, said her daily expenses have risen sharply. "Autos never use meters, and when we ask them, there's always an excuse.
What used to be a Rs 200 bike-taxi ride now costs me over Rs 300 by auto. The least the govt can do is enforce meter usage," she said.
Like Arpita, several students TOI spoke with said they are more affected than those with incomes. Vivan R Goyal, a 16-year-old PU student, said: "A ride that used to cost me Rs 120 now costs Rs 200 or more. If I ask them to go by meter, they demand Rs 100 extra. Why ban an affordable option if the alternative is this exploitative?"
Some auto drivers admit they are raising prices to make up for lost earnings.
"For years, bike taxis kept our rates low. Now that they're gone, we're charging more while we can," said a 45-year-old driver from JP Nagar.
A senior traffic officer said enforcement is ongoing but difficult. "We're booking cases against violators, but the sudden bike-taxi ban has left thousands jobless. It's better to regulate bike taxis legally than risk pushing people toward crime," the officer said.

DTH signals fade, but FM radio turns up the volume for MIB
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) earned lower revenues from the Direct-to-Home (DTH) television services market in FY25, reflecting a shrinking user base for pay TV services. Earnings from the FM radio sector however rose during the year, according to the ministry's latest annual accounts. In FY25, the MIB earned ₹648.73 crore from private DTH operators, declining from ₹692 crore in FY24 and ₹859.96 crore in FY23, a nearly 25% drop over two years. In contrast, revenue from private FM radio rose to ₹196.28 crore last fiscal from ₹186.80 crore in FY24 and ₹178.99 crore in FY23. Lulutox The ministry collects licence fees from DTH operators, who provide satellite-based television content across the country using high-powered Ku-band transponders. The segment includes four private operators Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV , and Sun Direct, along with public broadcaster Doordarshan, with the latter running its free-to-air DTH platform DD Free Dish. DTH subscriber base has been falling steadily over the years. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ) data, India's active DTH pay user base has fallen to 56.92 million in 2025 from 70.26 million in 2020. The erosion has been gradual but consistent, with annual drops from 69.57 million in 2021 to 66.92 million in 2022, 65.25 million in 2023, and 61.97 million in 2024. Live Events This sustained decline points to a larger shift in consumer behaviour, as audiences increasingly migrate to digital and over-the-top (OTT) platforms that offer more flexible, on-demand viewing experiences. ET reported on May 30 that MIB has also issued demand notices totalling over ₹16,000 crore to the four private DTH operators for outstanding licence fees, further straining a sector grappling with falling revenues and intense competition from OTT platforms and DD Free Dish. As per industry estimates, Prasar Bharati-owned DD Free Dish now reaches between 50 to 60 million homes, making it as large as or even larger than all four private DTH platforms combined. DD Free Dish does not collect subscription fees and operates on a free-to-air model. As such, its growth is not reflected in the ministry's licence fee earnings, as DD Free Dish does not pay a licence fee and operates outside the private DTH revenue framework. In contrast, FM radio continues to hold its ground, particularly in regional and semi-urban markets. The ministry earns revenue from FM broadcasters through non-refundable one-time entry and migration fees, annual licence fees, tower rentals, and processing charges. The ministry highlighted FM radio's growing appeal among younger listeners and local advertisers. Private FM channels are also playing a key role in the government's communication and outreach efforts. The ministry has been actively leveraging FM radio to promote developmental schemes, especially in remote and border areas. As of March 31, 2024, 388 private FM radio channels were operational across 113 cities in 26 states and five Union territories. New stations have recently been launched in strategic border regions such as Leh and Kargil in Ladakh, and Bhaderwah, Kathua and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir. According to TRAI, these FM channels reported total advertising revenues of ₹466.63 crore for the quarter ended March 31, a slight decline from ₹500.11 crore in the December quarter but still indicative of a resilient medium amid a rapidly changing media landscape.

Five states account for nearly 50% of active GST taxpayers; UP leads: SBI Report
As the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has completed eight years since its rollout, a recent report by SBI Research showed that just five states account for nearly 50 per cent of the total active GST taxpayers in India. This indicates a significant concentration of tax registration in a handful of states, highlighting the scope for improvement in others. Among these, Uttar Pradesh tops the list, contributing 13.2 per cent of all active GST taxpayers in the country. It is followed by Maharashtra at 12.1 per cent, Gujarat at 8.4 per cent, Tamil Nadu at 7.7 per cent, and Karnataka at 6.9 per cent. Live Events While these states dominate in terms of taxpayer numbers, the report also made a key observation, It noted that some economically stronger states are underperforming in GST participation when compared to their share in the overall Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). These include Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, which have a lower share of active GST taxpayers than their contribution to the national GSDP. This reflects a gap in formalisation and indicates untapped potential for GST expansion in these states. In contrast, states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Gujarat exhibit a reverse trend. Their share in total GST registrations is higher than their share in GSDP, suggesting greater formalisation and improved tax compliance. For example, Bihar contributes 4.3 per cent of total GST taxpayers, despite having only 2.8 per cent share in national GSDP. The report also highlighted that states like Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh contribute very little to the total GST taxpayer base, with each accounting for 1.4 per cent or less. As GST has completed eight years of implementation, the data reveal that while progress has been made in expanding the tax base, a large untapped opportunity remains, particularly in wealthier and more industrialised states. This insight can help guide future policy efforts aimed at increasing formalisation and boosting GST compliance across all regions.
