Footy pundit dishes out brutal dig at AFL club who banned him for allegedly 'bullying' 20-year-old star

Daily Mail01-05-2025

Kane Cornes issued a veiled dig at North Melbourne on Thursday night after the Kangaroos were beaten by Essendon at the Marvel Stadium.
Prior to the match, Cornes had been involved in a spat with Kangaroos bosses over his comments on 20-year-old star Harry Sheezel this week on Channel 7.
The controversial pundit, who is known for voicing divisive opinions, had delivered a scathing assessment of Sheezel's performance against Port Adelaide last weekend, slamming the young midfielder for his lack of efficiency with the footy.
Though this isn't the first time Cornes has been banned by a club, with the former Power player previously being handed a ban by the Western Bulldogs, the 42-year-old locked horns with the club over the matter after Todd Viney claimed his comments were 'bullying' and a 'personal and vindictive attack' on Sheezel.
Cornes, though, wanted to have the last laugh, taking to his Instagram on Thursday night, publishing a photograph of himself inside the Essendon changing rooms, along with Hamish McLachlan presenting for Channel 7.
A group of Bombers players were seen in the background preparing to walk out to the footy pitch, with Cornes captioning the image: 'Great to be in the winning rooms pre-game for Thursday night footy on 7.'
He added a 'shush-face' emoji after the caption.
In the second picture, he also published an image of Jy Simpkin shushing fans after he kicked a goal in the third quarter to bring North closer to the Bomber's lead.
Prior to the match, Cornes had said to Channel 7: 'We're outside. We can't get inside, which is disappointing.
'I was looking forward to asking Alastair Clarkson some tough questions; I think the club needs to answer those.
'But unfortunately, they've gone down this route.'
He was pressed on whether he had any regrets on his comments, adding: 'Not really. I think that was all reasonably strong criticism, but I think it was fair.
'It's very easy to run away so I'm disappointed and I think they've been poorly advised in this.'
But the war of words between Cornes and the Kangaroos isn't showing any signs of settling with Alastair Clarkson now hitting out against the former Port Adelaide star.
'They say those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, so I know a little bit about Kane's history,' Clarkson told Channel 7.
'Some of the things he was saying about Jy (Simpkin) and 'Sheez', I just think – especially from the host broadcaster and who is covering this game tonight – this isn't shared across the football world, but I've got a view there should be a relatively good balance.
'Particularly when you're talking about the players — they're the product of the game — they're the guys on the field and in the trenches with their mates trying to fight for their side.
'When the line gets crossed, we know that there's critique in the game, we've been copping it for 20 years.
'You know, especially as a coach, when these things happen we just have to cop it on the chin.
'I think it's a good indication of our stability as a football club. This was a club decision from the board right through to the football department that we need to look after our people and we just think it was untoward.'
Pressed on whether he felt Cornes would be further motivated to continue blasting the club, he said: 'That'll be up to Kane to work out how he goes about it.'
Despite the loss, Sheezel enjoyed a standout performance for the Roos, amassing 32 disposals and nine marks to be his side's best on the ground.

John Lundstram parties with Premier League best pal as ex Rangers star gets behind the decks at music festival

Lundstram appeared in video shared on social media looking relaxed as he partied with fellow Scouser Ross Barkley. John Lundstram was called out by his ex Rangers boss Philippe Clement in an interview last week. But it looked to be the furthest thing from the former Ibrox iron man's mind as he lived it up during a break in Barcelona. ‌ Lundstram appeared in a video shared on social media looking relaxed as he partied with fellow Scouser Ross Barkley. ‌ Aston Villa star Barkley posted a video to his followers on Instagram as he partied in the Catalan capital. And Lundstram joined the 31-year-old in the Spanish city as they enjoyed their summer break. The pair have been close friends since they were teenagers, having played for Everton and England U20s. The duo were at an all-night music event in one of Spain's most lively cities. Footage shared on social media showed the duo in the the VIP area of Eastenderz - OFFWEEK Castle's 6pm to 6am event in Barcelona. Eight artists performed through the night at the event. ‌ Lundstram departed Ibrox last summer and joined Turkish side Trabzonspor. In an interview last week, Clement pointed the finger at the Englishman and Borna Barisic, who joined Lundstram in Turkey, as having his mind on his next move during his final months at Rangers. The Belgian said: 'If I look back, two players who were not good in those two games (against Ross County and Dundee where they dropped points) they left at the end of the season on a free transfer. 'They were at that moment busy also talking with other teams with their agents, about their future and all those things. 'Probably, and maybe, it had an affect on them. Did they not want to become Rangers? For sure not. They wanted to become champions and give everything. 'But the situation to be at the end of the contract at that moment of the season was also not a good one.'

Prince Harry sends 'bold message' to royals in personal Archie and Lilibet video

In tribute to Prince Harry on Father's Day, Meghan Markle shared a video of heartwarming family moments over the years - but there's a strong message hidden in the montage according to an expert Meghan Markle has shared never-before-seen footage of her children to mark Father's Day - and one expert believes it points to a new strategy for the Sussexes. The Duchess of Sussex shared an incredibly personal video montage of Prince Harry with their two young children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The compilation featured various photos and videos of the Duke of Sussex with his kids over the years, marking a notable shift from the couple's previous stance of keeping their children's faces completely out of the public eye. The Duchess of Sussex took to Instagram shortly before midnight UK time to share the video, which was set to the song Have It All by Jason Mraz. Meghan added the caption: "The best. Happy Father's Day to our favorite guy", as heartwarming montage was played out of Harry with Archie, six, and Lilibet, four. Special intimate moments are shown including footage of Archie and Lilibet as babies, while other clips showed Harry running around outside with them, dancing in the kitchen, at the beach, and during various other family days out. The clip comes just days after Meghan shared another personal video of her twerking while in labour. Reacting to the new video, body language expert Judi James has revealed a striking contrast between Meghan's Father's Day post and Princess Kate's - and says there's a hidden message for Archie and Lilibet. "The basic display tone of this video, that is a narrative of clips of Harry being a father, is very different to the one the UK royals tend to use for their Father's Day poses," Judi told the Mirror. She explained: "With William and his children, Kate is very present, holding the camera. The children and often William tend to look into the camera to signal firstly inclusion of Kate but secondly their sense of having a public role too. "Meghan's films suggest she is admiring her husband from a distance here. The sense of strong love is present, but it's also a reflective presence as though she's wanting to show how Harry reacts naturally with their children, almost when 'nobody is watching'. It's the kind of event many mothers experience when they look out of the window to watch their husband playing with the children and reflect on how good a father they are." Judi continued: "This is a whole cinematic-looking narrative, too. Unlike the rather basic filming of her pregnancy twerking, this is glossy and idealistic, using lighting and filming techniques to make it look like movie class. It often feels like you're watching the opening credits of a show like Succession where they mock up historic-looking home movies to bring the family up to the present day. "There's the technicolour technique at the start and end, which is similar to the Enid Blyton style colouring they once used on their Xmas cards. There's soft focus for the babies, then a more Vogue-style lighting and filming as Harry walks with his kids as they get older." Sharing her thoughts on how the father-of-two is represented amid his ongoing public feud with his family, the expert shared: "Harry is shown being a tender, tactile and often playful dad who is very involved in teaching his children as they grow. And one theme which runs throughout the clip could be seen as a message to the royals as Harry's fight for protection and security for his children while visiting the UK rumbles on. "There is also a very strong message of freedom for the children and Harry here, too," Judi notes. "There is a lot of running and walking away from the camera to continue to reject a more public profile but it's the recurring theme of the bare feet too." Judi added: "With both Harry and his children walking in bare feet, the symbolic reference is to a free life but also to a wealthy one, as walking barefoot on public streets and parks tends to be a dangerous pastime. On your own estate, though, it's clearly just fine." The Father's Day post is part of a growing trend of Meghan sharing more intimate moments from their family life on social media. Just last week, she posted a video of the family's fun-filled day at Disneyland to celebrate Princess Lilibet's fourth birthday. It comes as Harry and Meghan recently gave their PR team the boot, making huge changes to how they run their internal communications. They have now hired Method Communications, who claim they are "disruptors" who "challenge the status quo".
