Back Vikings To Repeat Last Season's Success Behind J.J. McCarthy
That doesn't mean sending a text message to the group chat with your high school friends who persuade you to drink the Kool-Aid every summer. Hell, if you bet the Chicago Bears "Over" the last 12 seasons, you'd be 1-11.
You need people to shoot you straight.
Heading into this year, I find myself a big ol' believer in the Minnesota Vikings. They have one of the best 53-man rosters in the NFL, and head coach Kevin O'Connell and defensive coordinator Brian Flores do an exceptional job at maximizing their talent with proper schematics and execution.
Whenever I'm feeling extra purple around August, I shoot my thoughts over to Thor Nystrom , football analyst at Fantasy Life. He's a Vikings guy through and through, and he's plugged into people close to the organization.
He's also a straight shooter.
"They have a real good shot to be a top-three defense this year," Nystrom told me earlier this week. "Sportsbooks were way too low on [the Vikings] when they dropped the new numbers after the Super Bowl."
As long as 22-year-old quarterback J.J. McCarthy isn't a massive downgrade from The Ghost of Sam Darnold, Minnesota should be more than fine. Nystrom studied how McCarthy handled high-leverage situations at Michigan and came away extremely impressed with the results.
"The kid is a killer," Nystrom analyzed back in February 2024 . "He's mobile and when he scrambles, he can throw on the run. He was one of the best quarterbacks in the nation under duress."
Imagine the possibilities with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Aaron Jones and T.J. Hockenson behind a bolstered line with O'Connell calling plays.

Here are three bets I like for the 2025 Vikings.
J.J. McCarthy Comeback Player of the Year (+1000 at DraftKings)
We'll find out soon if McCarthy is ready for the next level. Odds are good he will be after winning a national championship, then spending a full calendar year learning O'Connell's offense. Dak Prescott and Aidan Hutchinson are co-favorites, but the path is there for McCarthy. If he returns from a meniscus tear and helps Minnesota reach 10 wins or more, he's a surefire contender.
Jonathan Greenard Defensive Player of the Year (+10000 at BetMGM)
If the Vikings are a top-five defense, one of their best players is worth a pop. The front office added Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave up front, which should make life much easier for Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel off the edge. Both players recorded double-digit sacks last year and I think it's downright disrespectful that multiple books are offering Greenard at this price.
Make the playoffs (-105 at FanDuel)
As stated above, I believe Minnesota boasts one of football's most talented rosters. Staying healthy is important, of course, but I expect success if the team isn't ravaged by injuries. O'Connell and Flores have all the tools to ensure the Vikings remain one of the best seven teams in the NFC.

Chargers acquire Micah Parsons in proposed deal that sends Cowboys Najee Harris
Dallas Cowboys star linebacker Micah Parsons has not only requested a trade out of Dallas but also issued a statement saying he no longer wants to play there. Parsons is looking for an extension that his play on the field has shown he deserves, but Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have yet to grant his request. Now, they could decide to trade him instead. While many landing spots and trade possibilities have been discussed since the news of his trade request broke, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has come up with a deal that sends Parsons to the Los Angeles Chargers. Here are the details of his proposed deal: Chargers receive: Micah Parsons, 2027 4th-round pickCowboys receive: 2026 1st-round pick, 2026 2nd-round pick, 2027 1st-round pick, 2027 5th-round pick, Najee Harris This would be a lot to give up for the Chargers, but Parsons, one of the best defensive players in the league, commands this price. The Chargers would then need to sign him to a contract extension as his deal expires at the end of this season. "The Los Angeles Chargers, presumably, are looking to continue trending upward under new head coach Jim Harbaugh. L.A. saw a six-win improvement last season while fielding the league's No. 1 scoring defense. This offseason, Los Angeles bolstered its offense by adding players like Najee Harris, Omarion Hampton and Tre Harris. Hampton, a first-round running back out of North Carolina, is expected to lead Los Angeles' rushing attack. That doesn't necessarily make Harris expendable. The former Pittsburgh Steelers standout still has "no timeline" for returning from an eye injury either, according to The Athletic's Daniel Popper. However, including Harris might be an acceptable sweetener for a Cowboys team hoping it can find a viable starting back between Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, Deuce Vaughn and rookie fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue", wrote Knox. Overall, it would be a move unlike any we've ever seen the Chargers make, but Jim Harbaugh, knowing that his team is a contender and has the money to lock up Parsons for the rest of the prime of his career, could help entice the front office to take a chance. Harris has yet to do much of anything in L.A. since signing as a free agent this summer. An eye injury suffered during a fireworks incident on the Fourth of July has kept him off the practice field in training camp. The Cowboys are not going to want to move Parsons, and most of this is just posturing from the player and the front office to get what they want. It's happened in Dallas for decades with Jerry Jones in charge. But if the two sides can't come to an agreement and Parsons really does want out of Dallas, at just 26 years old, the Chargers could shake up the entire season by making a move to land him. Broncos sign LB Garret Wallow, cut CB Mario Goodrich
The Broncos have found themselves with a need at linebacker during training camp, and they've signed Garret Wallow to give themselves some depth at the position. Wallow arrives after injuries to Broncos linebackers Alex Singleton, Dre Greenlaw and Drew Sanders. The 26-year-old Wallow most recently played for the Titans in 2023. He missed the entire 2024 season with a torn pectoral. He was originally a 2021 fifth-round draft pick of the Texans who played in 32 games in Houston, with five starts. He also has played a lot on special teams, and that might be his best chance of making the Broncos' regular-season roster. To make room for Wallow on the roster, the Broncos waived cornerback Mario Goodrich, who signed in June after playing in the UFL.

Amazing example of Jayden Daniels' evolving leadership
When Jayden Daniels first reported to the Washington Commanders' rookie minicamp shortly after being drafted in the spring of 2024, he said all of the right things. He continued to say the right things throughout minicamp, training camp, and in the season. One famous Daniels' quote was that he was not a star, he was a rookie. Daniels preferred to let his play do the talking. He deferred to Commanders' veterans like Bobby Wagner, Terry McLaurin and Zach Ertz, while quietly going about his business, building relationships with every single player and coach on the roster. By the middle of the season, whether he realized it or not, the rookie sensation was already one of Washington's leaders. Daniels continues to say all of the right things because that's who he is. However, entering his second NFL season, and becoming more comfortable with Kliff Kingsbury's offense and his teammates, Daniels has taken a more active role as a leader. Veteran running back Austin Ekeler recently revealed that Daniels kicked an unknown player out of the huddle in training camp due to a false start. "He said, 'Get out, we can't be doing that,'" Ekeler said, via John Keim of ESPN. "That's leadership we wouldn't have seen last year. He's holding the standard, letting everyone know this is how we play. If you're not playing at this level, you can't be on the field. That's awesome to see in a quarterback." Daniels met with the media on Thursday and discussed his ever-evolving leadership. "I think it's a standard that we set on the offensive side, and I'm the one who's got to uphold the standard," Daniels said. "That's if guys are false starting, the next guy up, stuff like that. Even for me, it's like holding myself accountable. If I mess up or look to [TE] Zach [Ertz], I'll look to guys like that to hold me accountable too. That's just holding leadership-wise, not letting nobody fall underneath the standard.' That's music to the ears of Kingsbury and head coach Dan Quinn. This is the type of ownership they want to see from Daniels, and to be doing it ahead of his second season is remarkable. Kicking a player out of the huddle may sound extreme to the casual fan. But it's the type of leadership we've always seen from the best quarterbacks, such as Tom Brady, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning and so many others. The best part: the player kicked out of the huddle and the rest of the team respect Daniels enough to get it right the next time.
