Israeli official says settlement construction he's OK'd in West Bank "finally buries the idea of a Palestinian state"

CBS Newsa day ago
Israel's far-right finance minister announced approval Thursday of the construction of a contentious settlement in the Israeli-occupied West Bank that Palestinians and rights groups worry would scuttle plans for a future Palestinian state by effectively cutting the West Bank into two separate parts.
The announcement comes as several major U.S. allies have announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state in September.
"This reality finally buries the idea of a Palestinian state, because there is nothing to recognize and no one to recognize," said Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. "Anyone in the world who tries today to recognize a Palestinian state - will receive an answer from us on the ground."
Development in E1, an open tract of land east of Jerusalem, has been under consideration for more than two decades, but was frozen due to U.S. pressure during previous administrations. On Thursday, Smotrich praised President Trump and U.S. ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee as "true friends of Israel as we have never had before."
The E1 plan hasn't yet received its final approval, which is expected next week. The plan includes around 3,500 apartments to expand the settlement of Maale Adumim, Smotrich said. While some bureaucratic steps remain, if the process moves quickly, infrastructure work could begin in the next few months and construction of homes could start in around a year.
Rights groups swiftly condemned the plan. Peace Now called it "deadly for the future of Israel and for any chance of achieving a peaceful two-state solution" that is "guaranteeing many more years of bloodshed."
The Palestinian foreign ministry called the plan an extension of crimes of what it says are genocide, displacement and annexation, the Reuters news agency reports. Israel fiercely denies those characterizations.
It wasn't immediately clear if Netanyahu backs the E1 plan, Reuters said.
Smotrich's popularity has dropped in recent months, Reuters notes, with polls showing his party wouldn't win a single seat if parliamentary elections were held today.

Cencora Directors Reach $111 Million Deal on Opioid Claims

Cencora Inc. directors have agreed to a settlement of more than $111 million to resolve claims by pension funds that they ignored years of red flags about the drug distributor's handling of opioid painkillers and failed to set up required systems to monitor sales of the drugs. The deal would end litigation accusing directors of turning a blind eye to suspiciously large opioid shipments to reap billions for the firm, which was known until 2023 as AmerisourceBergen Corp. before it changed its name.

Will the Democrats Go Centrist in the 2028 Election?

New York A pair of safe predictions: The winner of the 2028 Republican presidential nomination will have to negotiate the protean wishes of Donald Trump. And the winner of the Democratic contest will have to confront the party's attraction to socialism and an array of factions that would rather see Democrats lose than compromise: the climate lobby, advocates of open borders and transgenderism, and, above all, the anti-Israel left.

🚨 Lower fee than expected? Coman's Bayern exit now official!

Kingsley Coman will leave FC Bayern Munich for good! The record champions have just officially announced his transfer to Al-Nassr. According to consistent media reports, he will sign a contract with the Saudi club until 2028. However, there seems to be some confusion regarding the transfer fee. 'Sky' transfer expert Florian Plettenberg reports that nearly 35 million euros are expected to flow into Munich's coffers. 30 million euros are guaranteed, plus an additional two to three million that are "easy to achieve," as well as further possible bonuses. According to Fabrizio Romano, however, the sum is said to be under 30 million euros. Coman himself is set to receive an annual salary of 20 to 25 million euros at the Saudi club. This will significantly increase his income once again! This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence.
