Oliver Glasner hints he could leave Crystal Palace over transfer frustrations

Daily Mirrora day ago
Crystal Palace have remained quiet in the transfer market amid their ongoing battle for a place in the Europa League and boss Oliver Glasner could add to their woes
Oliver Glasner has thrown his Crystal Palace future into doubt by hinting he could follow his stars out of the door. The Eagles have endured a rollercoaster summer despite winning last season's FA Cup.

They have been embroiled in a legal battle with UEFA having been stripped of their place in the Europa League due to multi-club ownership rules. And that has had a knock-on effect on their summer business.

Just two players have arrived - Borna Sosa from Ajax and goalkeeper Walter Benitez - while Palace's star players continue to be linked with exits. Eberechi Eze is being eyed by Arsenal, with captain Marc Guehi the subject of interest from Liverpool.

Recent reports have claimed that the Reds are in pole position for the ex-Chelsea man, who has a year left on his contract. And now, Glasner has hinted that if the defender leaves, he could follow him out of the door.
Speaking ahead of Sunday's Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace, the Austrian said: "Marc and me - we have the same fate. I can't speak, you have to ask Marc. At the end, it's always the player's decision.
"Marc decides about his future. Of course, everybody wants Marc to sign a new contract. It will be his decision. Everybody wants to keep this squad together as it did so well. I don't know how often this happens here at Palace.
"We never know what will happen in this sometimes crazy transfer market." Asked if his decision hinges on the rest of the window, Glasner replied: 'We will see.'
On Palace's lack of action so far, he added: 'I said if we want to be better than last year, then it's my advice, 'Let's sign at least two players, then we can achieve this'. To be competitive in four competitions. If somebody thinks that's nonsense, OK, let's see.

'If Crystal Palace wants to play European football, wants to climb the Premier League table and reproduce the success again, it's just what you have to do. Everybody knows this in the building.
'Of course, it helps if players are in early when you start with pre-season because here you have time to train. We are quite passive. We are short of numbers, we have to add players, especially with quality.'

Palace get their new season underway at Wembley on Sunday ahead of beginning their Premier League campaign against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a week's time. Eze's future could potentially be decided by then.
The England winger has a £62.5m release clause written into his contract at Selhurst Park, albeit that only remains active until August 15. And should no club make a move before then, Palace are expected to demand considerably more than that.

Former Manchester United star fires warning over Rasmus Hojlund decision

Manchester United have been warned not to let striker Rasmus Hojlund leave this summer, despite the arrival of Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenia international has been brought in from RB Leipzig for £74m, with the Red Devils beating Newcastle for the in-demand striker. The 22-year-old will have to adapt to his new surroundings in the Premier League, but is expected to lead the line in a new-look front three featuring Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. That will push Hojlund down the pecking order, which is no surprise after a seriously underwhelming season last time round. The Denmark international, who is also just 22 years old, managed 10 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions, with just four in 32 outings in the Premier League. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. After the arrival of Sesko, Manchester United are reportedly open to letting Hojlund leave, with AC Milan keen on a loan deal with an option to buy next summer. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that a deal between the two clubs has been struck, but the striker is keen to stay and fight for his place. Former Red Devils and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre feels letting the Dane go would be an error, with United needing competition for places and back-up for the starting XI. 'Marcus Rashford has gone and there are not a lot of strikers around, Joshua Zirkzee is a different type of striker that doesn't make those runs in behind the defence,' Silvestre told Hajper. 'He is another type of player for certain games, certain opposition. But no, you need competition, need quality, so I wouldn't rush into sending Rasmus Hojlund out on loan if Sesko signs. Absolutely not.' Silvestre does like what he has seen from Sesko, though, feeling like he could well be a hit under Ruben Amorim. ;Benjamin Sesko is an upcoming talent and he's got certain qualities that could fit into Ruben Amorim's style of play,' said the Frenchman. 'He's got presence, height, he's good with his back against the defenders. He's got the athleticism to respond to the physicality of the Premier League. He's ticking a lot of boxes for sure.' Amorim told MUTV of his new centre-forward: 'He has the characteristics that we needed. Ben is a player – with all the information that we have – that we need to stop the guy from working, not the opposite! 'So that is also important. He's really young. He's good in the air, he's good at running the channels, good on the ball. I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot and, for sure, he is going to feel at home in our club. More Trending 'He has the right character to be in this group, so I'm really happy to have him.' Hojlund was left on the bench on Saturday as Manchester United drew with Fiorentina in a pre-season friendly at Old Trafford. Mason Mount filled in as a false nine and thoroughly impressed his manager. 'It's unbelievable,' Amorim said of Mount's work rate. 'The way he works, moving all the time and he knows all the positions, but also the other guys. It was a good test to prepare for the first time.' Diogo Jota minute's silence cut short in disrespectful scenes

A small number of Crystal Palace fans disrupted a moment's silence at Wembley Stadium before the Community Shield match. The tribute was held for Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain on 3 July. While most Crystal Palace supporters observed the silence respectfully, a chanting minority prompted boos from Liverpool fans and calls for quiet from other Palace supporters. Liverpool are preparing for the new season without Jota, who was an integral part of their squad, and have paid various tributes to him. Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged the difficult summer for the club following Jota's passing, praising the strength and courage of his players.

Minute's silence for Diogo Jota cut short at Wembley ahead of Community Shield

Tributes were paid to former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota ahead of the Community Shield but the minute's silence at Wembley had to be cut short due to some shouting from a small number of Crystal Palace fans. Reds forward Jota died in a car crash along with his brother Andre Silva in Spain on July 3 and were honoured with wreaths laid on the pitch and a period of silence before kick-off. The moment was interrupted by a minority of fans from the Palace end, eliciting a strong response at the other end of the pitch, as well as from other Eagles supporters, who tried to silence those not respecting the tribute. Liverpool fans earlier paid respects with a rousing rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' as the wreaths were brought out, raising a white banner reading 'Diogo J' and featuring the forward's image and number 20. Liverpool great Ian Rush, Palace chairman Steve Parish and Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt laid the wreaths in the Liverpool end, as fans from both clubs expressed their respect with a standing ovation as the late siblings' images were displayed on the big screens inside the stadium. Reds boss Arne Slot on Thursday told the FA website he was immensely proud of how his Premier League champions had dealt with the tragedy. He said: 'This summer has been a difficult for everybody connected with the club,' said Slot. 'The passing of Diogo Jota had a big impact on all of us and is something that we are still coming to terms with. 'We cannot imagine the pain that Diogo's family, his wife, children and friends are going through, and the club will continue to give them all the support they can going forward. 'Diogo's passing has had a big impact on us all, but what has been so important has been the love and care shown from the football world, and in particular of course the Liverpool FC community. 'I also want to mention the strength and the courage of my players here. They have found themselves in one of the toughest positions imaginable, but the way they have come together and the way they have conducted themselves, on and off the pitch, is a credit to them and to this football club. We really couldn't have asked more of the boys, and I am extremely proud of them all. 'We will always carry Diogo with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go.'
