HRF opposes land acquisition for Indosol project at Karedu
The State government has already released multiple notifications to acquire the farm lands at Karedu and other villages. On Wednesday, they campaigned along with the villagers against the land acquisition of more than 8,500 acres in various villages for the proposed project. They addressed street meetings and distributed pamphlets to the local people.
Addressing the public, HRF Sate general secretary Y. Rajesh and secretary G. Rohith said that the State government is unnecessarily acquiring such a large extent of land when a fraction of it is enough for the project. They also pointed out that the government is facilitating a company that has no track record in taking up such a big project.
During the campaign, RCJS president M. Mohan Rao alleged that the government had taken an undemocratic decision to waive off the consent and Social Impact Assessment (SIA) requirements of the project. 'The legal standing of this waiver is on shaky grounds, given that such waiver can only be done in the public interest. Except providing gains to a private company, one is hard pressed to find any public interest in this project. This proposed project involves silica processing, which has been established as highly toxic and polluting,' he said.
The HRF and RCJS members questioned the government's largesse to Indosol Solar Limited to the tune of around ₹45,000 crore, which is a staggering 60 per cent of the total proposed investment. The alleged it as socialising costs and privatising profits to a private company.
Farmers meet Jagan
Earlier, farmers from Karedu met former Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy at the party's central office in Tadepalli on Tuesday. They had submitted a request letter seeking his support in protecting their agricultural lands at Karedu from industrial use.
The farmers expressed strong opposition to the government's decision to allocate these lands for the project and explained that the area supports two crops a year and sustains thousands of farming and fishing families. They are afraid that the industrial takeover would threaten their livelihood and disrupt the local environment.

The camp is at a place referred locally as 'Oota mamidi' a perennial spring abutting a mango tree. Just behind it is a rivulet that flows East to merge with the Pamuleru vaagu. The three Maoists were camped at that spot for over two weeks. A large contingent of Greyhounds went via Kintukuru (Akuru panchayat) past midnight of June 17. They evidently had precise detail of the camp location which they surrounded from two sides to the South. The Greyhounds opened fire at daybreak, killing all three Maoists. There was no exchange of fire – no crossfire - only a targeted execution. The Greyhounds could have easily apprehended the three alive but they chose to kill them instead. The three Maoists killed were Gajarla Ravi (of Velishala village in Chityala mandal, Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, Telangana), Venkata Ravivarma Chaitanya (of Karakavanipalem in Pendurthi mandal, Visakhapatnam district, AP) and Kovvasi Anju, an Adivasi from Bodagubal village, Konta block, Sukma district of Chattisgarh. The bodies were taken to the Rampachodavaram Area Hospital the same evening, but the post-mortem was deliberately delayed until the next day. Relatives were forced to wait, plead, and it was only after sustained media pressure that they ultimately received decomposed bodies late on the night of June 19. By the time they were brought home, the bodies were infested with worms. These killings by special forces are part of a chilling, systematic ongoing campaign. Since January 2024, over 440 Maoists and unarmed civilians – preponderantly Adivasis in Chattisgarh - have been killed in encounters, many of them allegedly staged. We call on the Central and State governments in Maoist-affected regions to immediately halt this vicious slaughter. No democracy that claims to uphold Constitutional values can legitimise such a brutal policy of State-sanctioned extra-judicial bloodletting. HRF and HRW are of the opinion that the Maoists' repeated offers to cease hostilities and pursue peace talks warrants the government's utmost seriousness and constructive engagement. There is now a rare political opening to mitigate suffering, particularly among Adivasis, and address long-standing and deep-rooted grievances. This protracted conflict has already exacted a significant human cost, the three-member team added.

The move invited a strong protest from Lakshadweep MP Hamdullah Sayeed, who extended complete support to the local residents of the island and promised them to explore political and legal avenues to resist it. At present, there are 105 families on the island. And several have opposed the move. A recent government notification outlined this proposal for the Department of Revenue to take over the entire land area of Bitra Island, reported news agency PTI. The intent is to transfer it to relevant defense and strategic agencies of the Centre. What is the reason behind acquiring Bitra Island? The notification, issued last week, clarified that the initiative is driven by the strategic location of the island, its national security relevance, and the inherent logistical and administrative challenges posed by the civilian habitation. According to the news agency PTI report, the territorial administration would take over the island as per the relevant provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resetlement Act, 2013 for which Social Impact Assessment study has to be undertaken for the affected area. District Collector Shivam Chandra, in the order, said all stakeholders, including grama sabhas, would be consulted as part of the Social Impact Assessment initiatives. The survey of the proposed area under the acquisition would be completed within two months from the date of the publication of the notification on July 11, it stated. Why are some locals opposing the government's decision? On the other hand, Lakshadweep MP Hamdullah Sayeed has stood up firm against the move to take over Bitra island by the UT administration. He stated that the real objective behind the move is to displace the indigenous population. In a statement issued by his office, the MP said Bitra is the smallest inhabited island in the UT and he would strongly protest against the administration's attempt to acquire it under the pretext of defense requirements. He also demanded that the decision be withdrawn immediately. Sayeed pointed out that the land required for defense purposes has already been acquired by the government in several islands. He stated that targeting Bitra, which has had a permanent population for decades, without considering any of these alternatives, is completely unacceptable. Furthermore, he criticised the administration for initiating such actions without any consultation with the indigenous residents, especially at a time when there are no functioning of local panchayat in the islands.
