Officers accused of selling affidavits for R100

TWO police officers are set to appear in court on Tuesday following their arrests for allegedly selling commissioned blank affidavit forms to the public for R100.
The men in blue - a 41-year-old sergeant and a 31-year-old constable - were stationed at the Table View police station and were arrested on Sunday night.
They are now facing charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile issued a firm warning following the arrest.
'Corruption within our ranks will not be tolerated, and every effort will be made to remove any police officer found on the wrong side of the law from the Service,' Patekile said.
Police spokesperson Andrè Traut said the matter first surfaced last year when a signed and commissioned statement was discovered in a vehicle at a crime scene in Table View which sparked an investigation.

"The arrests stem from allegations that a 41-year-old sergeant and a 31-year-old constable were selling commissioned blank affidavit forms to members of the public at R100 per statement.
"The matter first came to light late last year when a signed and commissioned statement was discovered in a vehicle at a crime scene in Table View. An investigation was immediately launched by the Anti-Corruption Unit.
"Once sufficient evidence was obtained, the Cape Town Magistrates Court issued warrants for their arrest. This culminated in the detention of the two members at the police station (Sunday) night.
"They will face charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice and are expected to make their first court appearance in Cape Town,' Traut said.

The war began on October 7 2023 when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Israel has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians in its assault on Gaza since then, according to health officials in the Palestinian enclave. Prosecutors in court papers said Reardon, in a voicemail left with a synagogue in Attleboro, Massachusetts, on January 25 2024, said 'you do realise that by supporting genocide that means it's OK for people to commit genocide against you'. Prosecutors said Reardon also threatened to bomb Jewish places of worship and said by 'supporting the killing of innocent little children that means it's OK to kill your children'. Prosecutors said he then called another synagogue in Sharon, Massachusetts, and left a threatening voicemail. He also called the Israeli consulate in Boston 98 times over several months, saying in one call it was 'time to prepare the furnaces again', according to prosecutors, a reference to the Nazis' systematic extermination of Jews in the World War 2 Holocaust.

25 years in jail for man who damaged essential infrastructure, stole cables
The Booysens magistrate's court has convicted and sentenced Mxolisi Ntshulayilo to 15 years' imprisonment for tampering with and damaging essential infrastructure. The court also sentenced Ntshulayilo, 30, to an additional 10 years for the theft of copper cables belonging to Telkom on December 3 2024. The Johannesburg K9 Unit members, which were patrolling Tiger Moth Road in Aeroton, noticed the accused emerging from a manhole near a box belonging to fibre internet provider Openserve. The man was carrying a sack and a bag. Upon searching the suspect, police discovered rolls of copper cables. 'A check of the manhole revealed that cables had been cut. The accused was arrested and charged,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said. In court, prosecutor Ronnie Nomcebo Xulu said the accused had been convicted of a serious and prevalent offence affecting the entire country. Xulu said the accused's actions disrupted communication services in an industrial area, resulting in business losses. 'The state also called a Telkom official to testify, who confirmed that the damage caused required repairs costing about R100,000.' Mjonondwane said the court condemned the accused's actions, highlighting that tampering with essential infrastructure is a national crisis with far-reaching consequences. The court said disruptions to communication services affected businesses and hindered critical services such as hospitals and courts.

Cape Town rocked by mass murder in sleepy Muizenberg
Cape Town has been rocked by yet another mass murder, with police confirming that four men were shot dead in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Overcome Heights in Muizenberg. According to Colonel Andrè Traut, the bodies of the victims – aged between 20 and 37 – were discovered at approximately 05:30 on Mountain Road, each having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. 'The murders are being investigated by detectives attached to the Anti-Gang Unit, who are working tirelessly to determine the events that led to the incident,' said Traut. While gang-related violence is a suspected motive, it has not been confirmed, and investigators are keeping all lines of enquiry open.
