Suspected shooter captured in Minnesota; death investigation in Bedford Township; and more top stori
A man was killed as a result of a two-vehicle crash Sunday near Lansing, the Michigan State Police reported.
The crash happened about noon at the intersection of M-50 and Mulliken Road in Eaton County's Chester Township, involving a 2025 Chevrolet Equinox and a 2021 Chrysler Pacifica.
Troopers from the Lansing post reported a 30-year-old woman from Mulliken was driving the Chevrolet southbound on Mulliken Road, but disregarded the stop sign and struck the Chrysler that was traveling northwest on M-50.
The Chrysler driver was a 43-year-old Portland woman.
Both drivers were transported to University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Hospital in Charlotte to be treated for minor injuries.
But a passenger in the Chrysler, a 29-year-old man from Sunfield, was ejected from the minivan. He was taken to U-M Charlotte, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation is continuing. State police ask that anyone who has information relating to the crash call the Lansing post at 517-322-1907.

CEO of Michigan center appears for motion hearing in deadly hyperbaric chamber explosion
Attorneys in the case against the CEO of the Oxford Center in Troy, Michigan, met on Monday for a motion hearing to discuss what may be considered privileged evidence. "What we have here is a policy that gives the defendant adequate protections but still allows this process to go forward," said Assistant Attorney General Chris Kessel. Tamela Peterson, along with three other workers, were charged after 5-year-old Thomas Cooper was killed when the hyperbaric oxygen chamber he was receiving treatment in exploded earlier this year. Peterson is charged with second-degree murder. In the motion hearing, Oakland County District Court Judge Maureen McGinnis heard arguments over the future use of what is called a taint team, which would be brought in to look through any privileged documents, like any emails between the attorneys and their client. Peterson's lawyer said laptops that were seized and reviewed by police during their investigation may have contained that type of material. "They've already looked at it, and this motion comes a little late in that regard, because the police department already did it, and that's a problem," said defense attorney Gerald Gleeson. McGinnis ordered both the defense and prosecution to work together to submit a list of search terms that would be used to filter any possible privileged information. If they are not able to agree, the court will make the final ruling. "My expectation is it is a completely separate and distinct body of attorneys that would be doing that," said McGinnis. Peterson is set to appear for another motion hearing next month.

Death of Bedford High grad under investigation
BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, MI — Bedford Public Schools Superintendent Carl Shultz set up a GoFundMe page for the family of Gwendolyn Smith, a Bedford High School 2025 graduate who died Saturday, June 14. "Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough is reporting a death investigation in Bedford Monroe County Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau is currently on scene investigating a death investigation in the 1600 block of W Sterns Road. There is no threat to the community. More information will be released at a later time," the sheriff's office said in a Sunday, June 15 news release. Goodnough said Monday, June 16, the case remains under investigation. He said an autopsy needs to be completed before a cause and manner of death can be released. "Gwen was an extraordinary young woman whose presence left an indelible mark on our school community," Shultz said in a Sunday announcement to the Bedford school community. As of Monday, June 16, $11,600 have been raised to support the family.
