Warisan dodging its role in Kinabalu Move, says Sabah rep

Kunak assemblyman Norazlinah Arif said the clear evidence was that all Warisan assemblymen were gathered at the Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort at the time.
PETALING JAYA : A Sabah state assembly member has hit back at Warisan leader Shafie Apdal for dodging her claim that Warisan had a direct role in the Kinabalu Move of January 2023 which attempted but failed to unseat Hajiji Noor as Sabah chief minister.
Norazlinah Arif, the assembly member for Kunak, who left Warisan shortly afterwards, said: 'The reality is every Sabahan knows he was directly involved.'
She said Shafie made a particularly vague response to her by simply denying his role in the Kinabalu Move without presenting facts and instead resorting to making personal jabs at her.
'The clear evidence is when all Warisan assemblymen were gathered at the Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort at the time. Why didn't he dare to give facts to deny Warisan's role in the move? Why did he just make a vague statement?' she told FMT.
Shafie had been scheduled to hold a press conference at the resort amid talk that Hajiji's government was about to collapse. The event was later cancelled, although members of the media and Warisan assemblymen were gathering there.
The following day, Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin, then a deputy chief minister, announced that Sabah Umno had withdrawn support for Hajiji. However, several Umno assemblymen refused to toe the party line, while Hajiji also received the backing of Pakatan Harapan.
Bung was then sacked from the state Cabinet while PH assemblymen were brought into Hajiji's Cabinet.
Norazlinah had described the Kinabalu Move as the ultimate betrayal of Sabahans, when they were hoping that the federal unity pact would also translate into unity in the state government to prioritise the rakyat.
Shafie maintained that it was not his political move, but stemmed from a conflict between Hajiji and Bung. 'We were in the opposition benches all the while,' he had said.
Norazlinah mocks 'traitor' label, fires back at Azis
Norazlinah fired back after being labelled as a 'traitor' to Warisan. She said the party's leaders and elected representatives were also mostly 'traitors' in their own right.
Shafie was formerly an Umno vice-president, his deputy, Darell Leiking, was from PKR, and the party also accepted DAP assemblymen Justin Wong (Sri Tanjong) and Calvin Chong (Elopura), in 2022.
Norazlinah also said Warisan information chief Azis Jamman should 'focus on his own problems', after he cynically said he would help her lobby for a seat to contest on a Gabungan Rakyat Sabah ticket in the coming state elections.
She said Azis should be the one looking for a seat after having lost his Sepanggar parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election. Azis also does not hold a state seat.
'Unlike him, I don't need to lobby (for a seat) by making statements. My hard work in Kunak is already proof (of my service) and will determine whether I will be re-elected by the people or not,' said Norazlinah, a two-term assembly member.
'I hope the people of Sabah will evaluate (Warisan) wisely and not be influenced by the slander they throw around. Don't repeat past mistakes,' she said.

Anwar meets with Zahid and Hajiji, pledge cooperation to strengthen Putrajaya-Sabah ties

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised that close cooperation between state and federal leaders is essential to ensure the aspirations of the people are realised in a comprehensive and inclusive manner. The Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said he had held a meeting with Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, conducted in a harmonious atmosphere marked by camaraderie. 'This meeting reflects political maturity and a commitment to strengthening cooperation to ensure the country's stability, particularly in the context of relations between the federal government and the state of Sabah. 'I believe political stability is a crucial foundation for advancing development agendas and safeguarding the welfare of the people,' he said in a Facebook post yesterday. Anwar, who is also PKR president, expressed hope that this spirit of consensus will continue to underpin stronger national unity, leading to a progressive, just, and prosperous future for all in Malaysia. — Bernama

Hanipa backs Muda's Zahid re-indictment push, Umno leaders cry foul

Former deputy law minister Hanipa Maidin has thrown his weight behind Muda's campaign to reopen corruption charges against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, while Umno leaders accuse the party of judicial interference and opportunism. In a statement today, Hanipa said that Muda has 'every right' to launch its re-indictment campaign, citing the legal principle that a prima facie case had already been established against Zahid before he was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in September 2023.

People's priorities main focus of Warisan, says Shafie

Shafie (right) speaking to Chris at his residence in Kota Kinabalu. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 18): Parti Warisan (Warisan) will contest the upcoming state elections on its own, with the people's priorities as its main focus, said its president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal. Responding to analyst reports predicting no single party will secure a majority, Shafie said Warisan has been an opposition party in Sabah for six years, and the priority is ensuring Sabahans decide their own future. 'I cannot make assumptions that if we don't have the numbers, then we have to work with others — we're not driven by greed. 'I'm worried that an election partner would be more concerned about benefits from the seats they win. To me, we need clarity. Let us be the only choice for Sabahans — we must resolve the people's needs now,' he said after receiving a courtesy call from United States Embassy political counsellor Chris Carver at his residence here today. Shafie stressed that Warisan will be selective in fielding candidates to prevent individuals implicated in corruption from further tarnishing Sabah's politics. 'We are not here to please them. We have to win the elections. I already told them that no corrupt practices will be tolerated,' he said. When asked if Warisan, as the main local party, would work with other Sabah-based parties, Shafie emphasised that trust and consistency are crucial. He revealed that a leader of a component party in a local coalition had told him they would leave the coalition last year, yet remained in it. 'This shows inconsistency. If they don't get the seats or arrangements they want, they will pull out. This means they are still thinking of themselves instead of the people, who still face water and electricity problems. 'Warisan was set up to fight for Sabah's rights, not to be YBs. We want proper leaders,' he said. Although not discounting potential cooperation with local parties, Shafie stressed that Warisan's focus is to work directly with the people to drive transformative change. On candidates, he said there are three to five potential individuals for each constituency, and all profiles are being scrutinised carefully. 'First, we have to win. Second, once they become YBs, they must serve their people. The people's voice must be the priority,' he said. Shafie's meeting with Chris also touched on Sabah's economy, well-being and opportunities for international partnerships. 'Interestingly, we also talked about women's football, which is very popular in Sabah. Many Malaysian national team players are Sabahans, showing our strength and passion for the game,' he said. He added that the US Embassy's recent soccer clinic in Sabah highlighted the potential for youth development and sports exchanges. 'It's always encouraging when Sabah is recognised not just for our resources, but for our people and their talents,' said Shafie.
