India vs England 5th Test, London weather forecast: Rain at Oval right after toss forces covers to be pulled on
Half an hour before the start of play too, a modest drizzle had forced the grounds staff to cover the central square. Early morning rains and cloud-cover made for a gloomy Oval. As both the teams trained, it seemed like 'win toss, bowl first' kind of Test. And there was no surprise as Pope won the toss and asked India to bat first.
However, weather forecast said it was to be a rainy day with frequent breaks expected. It is expected to be a day that the pace bowlers will relish and batsmen will dread.
Accuweather's weather predictions for Thursday, the first day of the 5th Test state: 'Rather cloudy; a couple of morning showers followed by occasional rain and a thunderstorm this afternoon.'
England currently lead the five-match series 2-1 heading into the final Test.

Marcus Trescothick says Akash Deep's send-off to Duckett was uncalled for
England's Assistant Coach Marcus Trescothick reflected on Ben Duckett and Indian pacer Akash Deep's friendly banter during the first session of day two of the fifth and final Test at The Oval, on Friday. Trescothick said it is better for a batsman to put his head down and walk off after getting out, adding that there was probably no need to walk Duckett off in the manner Akash Deep did. During the first session, Duckett tried getting under Akash Deep's skin, saying, "You cannot get me out in here". In response, although Akash did not say anything, Duckett hit him with a reversed ramp shot to the delight of the English crowd. However, Akash Deep soon turned the tables, bowling Duckett out caught behind by wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel for 43 runs off 38 balls, which included five fours and two sixes. During the celebration, he pumped his fist in front of Duckett, then wrapped his hand around his shoulder, smiling and exchanging a few words with the opener. "I don't think I've ever seen a bowler do that after getting someone out. You see, he obviously has many words, and we've seen it within the series on both sides, but it was just different. You put your head down and walk off. Your job is done at that point. There's probably no need to sort of walk him off in that fashion," Trescothick told the media. Trescothick also spoke on providing substitutes for injured players, and said rules have been in place for many years and they've done just fine in the past, so we should not be changing anything at the moment. Ahead of the start of Day 2 of the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, England suffered a significant blow as their ace right-arm seamer Chris Woakes was ruled out of the Test match after suffering a shoulder injury. "Test matches is test matches, and I think you don't need to adjust too much. I like to think we're producing some good cricket around the world in every test-playing nation. I don't think we should try and mess with it too much. The rules have been in place for many, many years. And they've done just fine in the past, so I wouldn't be changing anything at the moment," he added. Trescothick also believes the match is evenly poised between India and England and feels the pitch probably continues to be lively and more seam movement will happen as the game moves forward. "It's pretty evenly poised, I guess at the moment, plenty of wickets in the course of today, but the game is moving forward pretty quickly, and who knows what tomorrow will bring. I think you'll see the pitch probably continuing to be lively and more seam movement as the day goes on," he said. Coming to the match, four-wicket hauls from Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna and an attacking half-century from Yashasvi Jaiswal put India at the driver's seat at the end of the second day's play during the fifth Test against England at The Oval on Friday. At the end of the day's play, India was 75/2, with Jaiswal (51*) and night-watchman Akash Deep (4*) unbeaten. They lead by 52 runs. In their first innings, England had scored 247 in response to India's 224. However, Prasidh Krishna (4/62) and Mohammed Siraj (4/86) bowled exceptionally well to deny England a massive lead and triggered a batting collapse. The final session of the day kicked off with England being 215/7, with Harry Brook (33*) joined by Gus Atkinson, a capable lower-order hitter. Brief Scores: England: 247 (Zak Crawley 64, Harry Brook 53, Prasidh Krishna 4/62) vs India: 224 and 75/2 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 51*, Sai Sudharsan 11, Gus Atkinson 1/26).

Michael Vaughan Slams England's Team Selection: 'If It Was Easy, Anyone...'
Curated By : Rudransh Khurana Last Updated: August 02, 2025, 13:52 IST Michael Vaughan (AP Photo) Former England captain Michael Vaughan has slammed Brendon McCullum and the team's decision to pick Jacob Bethell for the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Vaughan said England were throwing undercooked players into the 'hotbed of international cricket', thinking it was 'easy'. He believes that it'll only end up hurting Bethell and other such cricketers' careers in the long term. Bethell had played only two Tests before coming in as Ben Stokes' replacement at the Oval. Out of his last ten matches, only one was a First-Class game, against Somerset in the County Championship Division 1 in June. Overall, known more as a white-ball talent, Bethell has played 24 First-Class matches, scoring 1030 runs at 28.61 and picking 12 wickets at 70. At the Oval, he was outfoxed to an LBW by a Mohammed Siraj yorker for 6 (14). 'It has been an epic. It really has been a brilliant series, and I think this England side, on this kind of pitch, I like the way that they played today," Vaughan told the BBC after the second day's play. 'The only thing I say is in terms of their selection, they have picked players who have been playing no cricket. And to throw them into this hotbed of international cricket in front of this amount of people, with so many more watching, not just here but on TV screens around the world, it isn't an easy game. If it was that easy, anyone could play Test match cricket. If you're throwing a 21-year-old into this situation on the back of one first-class match in our summer, I find that absolutely extraordinary. I don't think you're giving a kid the best chance of succeeding at this level," he added. Swipe Left For Next Video View all Bethell was only one of several changes England made for the match. They also brought back Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue into the team. While Atkinson was recovering from an injury for the first four Tests, and Tongue was already with the squad, Overton came off six straight games with Surrey. Stumps were called when India were 75/2, ahead by 52 runs in the Test. view comments News cricket Michael Vaughan Slams England's Team Selection: 'If It Was Easy, Anyone...' LIVE Cricket Score, IND vs ENG 5th Test Day 3 Updates: India to resume from 75/2 vs England, lead by 52
India had lost the wickets of KL Rahul (7) and Sai Sudharsan (11) early, but Akash Deep came in as the nightwatchman and ensured that India did not suffer any additional losses. The game was interrupted by rain on Friday as well and ended early due to bad light. Interestingly, England's stand-in captain Ollie Pope opted not to have his bowlers bowl for an additional 15 minutes at the end when umpires offered them the option of playing on but only with spinners due to the light being poor. Pope declined the offer, probably knowing fully well how Jaiswal likes to bat against spin. Pope did not want the half centurion the opportunity to plunder runs before stumps on day 2. The fate of the India vs England series is on the line at the Oval Test with England currently leading the five-match series 2-1. Both players are missing crucial players — while India don't have pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and keeper Rishabh Pant, the hosts are missing captain Ben Stokes for the game.
