Academics want to ‘decolonise' Stratford-upon-Avon, but the town remains gloriously unchanged

My hands are sticky with strawberry ice cream, so I wipe them on my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles T-shirt while someone blathers on about a bloke called William Shakespeare.
I'm in a strange town with marauding swans, a lazy river, and a stone bridge that glows in the decadence of mid-summer. Colourful narrowboats float on a listless canal while cars trundle up streets lined with crooked Tudor buildings. You can't move for badly dressed Yanks clutching camcorders.
It's a memory – probably an unreliable one – that visits me every so often; a happy, hallucinatory flashback of a childhood trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. Now I'm back, 30-something years later, reassured that nothing much has changed. The marauding swans are still here, the river still lazy, the Cotswold stone still glowing. The Americans are nowhere to be seen, mind. Yes, it's audibly quieter here these days.
Well, sort of. Stratford has found itself at the centre of a row over a project to 'decolonise' Shakespeare's birthplace. As is the fashion these days, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, which looks after properties associated with the Bard, has tasked itself with examining the role that Shakespeare's work – and objects in its care – have played in promoting Anglocentric and colonialist thought. The aim being to create a more inclusive museum experience.
It's an undertaking that sparks fervent debate on the streets of Stratford this Friday afternoon.
'Anglocentric? How many of his plays are set in sodding Italy?' sighs tour guide Joe Rukin, who I meet at the top of Sheep Street for his 'sinister walking tour of Stratford'. 'It seems unnecessary; we should just celebrate his work.'
Something about Stratford made me lean into the cliché of olde England – its macabre myths and legends – so I signed up to Rukin's excursion into the town's dark heart. 'The scariest thing we'll encounter is what falls out of Wetherspoons,' he quips.
Shakespeare, he says, stating the obvious, lived long before British colonialism took off. In fact, England was disentangling itself from foreign influence, as it broke away from the Roman Catholic Church during the Reformation.
'Shakespeare's baptism was recorded in Latin, but his burial was recorded in English – and he had a lot to do with that shift,' says Rukin, cutting an imposing figure in his top hat and tails, a creased shirt poking out of a roguish leather waistcoat. 'He made English fashionable again.'
Unconstrained by spelling pedantry, Shakespeare (or Shaxberd, Shappere and Shakspere, depending on his mood), introduced an estimated 1,700 words to the English language, including gossip, fashionable and rant, not to mention my wife's name, Imogen. He was a prolific phrasemaker, too. 'Vanish into thin air', 'one fell swoop' and 'cold comfort' are among his many gifts.
But the Bard may not have enjoyed such an enduring legacy were it not for one man. Rukin points his skull-capped cane towards a black and white building, home to The Garrick pub. It's named after the iconic 18th-century thesp David Garrick, hailed 'ye best Actor ye English Stage had produc'd' by then prime minister William Pitt the Elder.
Garrick's most enduring legacy, however, was reviving interest in Shakespeare almost 150 years after the Bard's death, turning his Stratford birthplace into a kind of Shakespeare Disneyland.
'He brought Shakespeare back to Stratford and is probably the person to thank for all these tourists,' says Rukin, as sightseers walk by. 'We're not long after the Reformation at this point. Shakespeare was absolutely used to create a new English identity.'
That identity was exported to the colonies. But while Shakespeare spoke the language of the occupiers, he also gave voice to the oppressed, as local stagehand Nick Dobson, who I bump into on Sheep Street, points out.
Indeed, Shakespeare's plays, which platform the marginalised, have been adapted by writers and directors around the world to speak of contemporary struggles. The Chinese – hardly effusive advocates of the British Empire – love the Bard so much they're building a replica of his hometown in Fuzhou.
'I studied Shakespeare – I love his love stories – and I said to my husband 'take me to the Shakespeare place',' says Mani Cupta, a tourist from Uttar Pradesh, India, who I find outside Shakespeare's birthplace with her obliging husband Gary. 'I like it very much here. It's beautiful, very quiet.'
Not on Rukin's tour it's not. In his booming voice he rattles off some local ghost stories as we walk towards New Place, Shakespeare's final home. Only it's not there. Its subsequent owner, one Reverend Francis Gastrell, razed it in a fit of rage in 1759, because he was fed up with tourists coming to visit. A commemorative garden has been planted in its place.
More than 400 years after his death, Shakespeare continues to support a thriving cottage industry of scholarly speculation; a maddening morass of contradictory academia that struggles to answer some of the most basic questions about the Bard. Like how he died.
One romantic tale persists: that he popped it during a drinking binge to celebrate his birthday – a true writer's exit. We do know that he's buried at the Holy Trinity Church, or rather most of him is – his skull is missing, assumed stolen by grave robbers.
'A church in Worcestershire claimed to have it for a while, but it turned out to be that of a 70-year-old woman,' says Rukin, as we stand in the church grounds, birdsong and pollen in the air.
The tour winds up near Bancroft Gardens where the Stratford Canal meets the River Avon. It's a picture of quintessential Englishness. Families eat ice cream amid blooming chestnut trees and scavenging swans, while theatregoers trickle into the imposing Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The smell of chips wafts from Barnaby's Fish Restaurant while a street entertainer plucks a guitar.
'Don't worry about the swans,' says Rukin, as the birds waddle towards us. 'Tamest swans in the world, these. They get fed chips their entire lives. However, the geese are buggers.'
A feeling of contentment washes over me in Bancroft Gardens. I've succumbed to the serenity of Stratford. And I'm not the only one.
'I could sit here for hours,' says Mark Scott, who's watching the world go by with his Yorkshire terriers Tiffany and Suzy, while wife Mandy fetches ice cream.
Scott, an HGV driver from Bloxwich, Walsall, is here celebrating his 61st birthday. He comes often. It's his happy place.
'There's no care in this country anymore,' he sighs. 'I see litter everywhere. It upsets me. That's why I come here. I like going to places that make me feel good.'
So do I, so I head to the Dirty Duck (AKA the Black Swan), a pretty, waterside pub claiming to be the only one in the land trading under two names. Even the boozers here have alter egos. Inside, a dalmatian sits on a stool at the 'Actor's Bar', while a French tourist drinks wine amid photos of stars who have supped in the tavern. Dame Judi Dench, Dame Helen Mirren and John Lithgow among them.
I have a swift one before walking over to the charming Attic Theatre for an intimate production of The Tempest, a play widely interpreted as an allegory of colonialism and colonial liberation.
It ends with the famous line: 'As you from crimes would pardoned be, yet your indulgence set me free', addressed directly to the audience.
It's a plea for redemption from the reconciliatory tyrant Prospero, and it melts away into raucous applause like ice cream on a summer's day.

The King's wildflower meadow at Highgrove has undergone its annual scything. Mowers and members of the Scythe Association of Britain & Ireland were pictured cutting back the species-rich plot at Charles's Gloucestershire estate this week as the end of the summer approaches. The King is known to be a fan of the traditional country craft and has in the past turned his hand to the skill, which was once boosted in popularity by actor Aidan Turner scything topless in the BBC drama Poldark. The age old practice, of using a tool with a long curved blade to cut meadows by hand in a low sweeping motion, produces a closer cut to the ground, allowing for better seed germination and maintaining biodiversity while providing crucial winter fodder for livestock. The meadow, which was established more than 40 years ago, covers four acres and is one of the most picturesque gardens at Highgrove House near Tetbury. It was developed by gardening expert Miriam Rothschild in 1982 with special seed mix which replicated old meadows which had been lost over time. Charles, then the Prince of Wales, wanted his experimental meadow to protect native flora and fauna which were in decline thanks to modern farming methods. The original seed mix comprised 32 varieties of native plants, including ox-eye daisies, yellow rattle, common spotted orchid, meadow crane's bill and ragged robin. Managed as a traditional hay meadow, it is cut in summer for hay, and grazed by sheep in the autumn, which helps to tread seeds back into the ground. Yellow rattle keeps grasses cropped, and more than seven types of orchids thrive in the soil. Spring is a highlight when scores of Lent lily and Ice Follies daffodils appear, followed by swathes of yellows, pink and purples. The meadow was named as the first of 60 Coronation Meadows in a project initiated Charles ahead of the 60th anniversary of Elizabeth II's coronation in 2013. It now contains more than 70 varieties of plants. Highgrove is open to the public from April to October, with all proceeds from visitors going towards the work of The King's Foundation – Charles's charity, based on the site, which works to protect traditional skills and crafts.

Find out more at / I've often thought Shakespeare gets away with a lot in setting up this imperfect regicide; the guilty couple's overnight descent into homicidal conspiracy seems implausibly quick – and this was stripped down even more. But drama implies a suspension of belief, and surely The Scottish Play gets a bit of dramatic licence? More important are the moral choices at stake. I reflected on the morality play underway in Alaska; have Putin or Trump ever seen Macbeth, I wondered. The knockabout style belied an often deep pathos in the acting, such as MacDuff's homecoming to horrific slaughter. But occasionally the passion got too much, and one scene featuring the show's director Laura Irish, as Queen Macbeth, teetered on over-acting. The drama felt inspiring and I wished my son, who's just started high school, was there. The production could easily ditch the F-bombs which are definitely not in the First Folio; then my son's new school could book them for their own backyard – but hold the 'vintage' prithee! The art of the city: a walking tour of Edinburgh's best landscape sculptures

A distinct farmyard smell lingers near the muddy Sheep Paintings. People walk slowly between two dense hedges of windfallen oak branches, or stand silently in a fragile cage of bulrush stems with light seeping through the mossy skylight overhead. I'm visiting the largest ever indoor exhibition of work by Andy Goldsworthy, one of Britain's most influential nature artists. His recent installations have a visceral sense of rural landscape: hare's blood on paper, sheep shit on canvas, rusty barbed wire, stained wool, cracked clay. The show is a sensory celebration of earth – its textures and temperatures, colours, character. The seasons cycle through an ongoing multidecade series of photos featuring the same fallen elm. There are leaf patterns and delicate woven branches, crusts of snow, lines of summer foxglove flowers or autumn rosehips. Andy Goldsworthy: Fifty Years is a National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) exhibition in the neoclassical Royal Scottish Academy building. After the exhibition, as a sort of cultural pilgrimage, I'm walking six miles across Edinburgh in search of works by the Dumfriesshire-based Goldsworthy and other artists who engage with the landscape. I start at the Royal Botanic Garden (free and open daily, a short bus ride north of the National Gallery. Just inside the east gate, there's a perforated sculpture by Barbara Hepworth with sunlight pouring through it. 'Art has made me look at the world … and engage with what's around me,' Goldsworthy writes in the notes for Fifty Years. Walking up through shady beeches, blazing wildflowers and scented, bee-buzzing lavender, there's a bronze girl in a waterlily pond, and a sundial by the Scottish artist and writer Ian Hamilton Finlay near the terrace cafe. Finlay's best-known artwork is the garden he created with his wife, Sue, in the wild Pentland Hills (£15 over-16s, £10 for 10-15s, under-10s free, open Thursday to Sunday until 28 September, He also built a stone temple in the rolling, wooded acres of Jupiter Artland, a few miles from Edinburgh, where Goldsworthy has put rocks in trees and trees in a stone-walled barn (£11.80 adults, £7.50 children). Celebrating both artists, Jupiter's exhibition Work Begat Work runs until 28 September. In the Royal Botanic Garden, Goldsworthy's Slate Cone stands next to Inverleith House, where the gallery is showing feminist photomontages by Linder (free, until 19 October), who opened this year's Edinburgh art festival (until 24 August). Enlarged images from her work (smiling mouths, bees, lilies) are dotted among ponds and flowerbeds. Goldsworthy's Slate, Hole, Wall, a round enclosure of stacked grey stones, stands in the gardens' south-east corner, under a weeping silver lime tree sweet with honey-fragrant blossom. The Water of Leith Walkway runs close to the John Hope Gateway on Arboretum Place, and I follow it south-westwards. In Stockbridge, the Sunday market, shaded by whitebeam trees, offers loaves of artisanal bread, Perthshire strawberries and cakes made from insects. Almost hidden in branches under a bridge, a lifesize cast-iron figure stands in the river nearby, one of Antony Gormley's 6 Times statues. Another of the figures is buried chest-deep by the zebra crossing between National Galleries Scotland: Modern One and Two. Wandering past domed St Bernard's Well, with its statue of the goddess of health, and picturesque Dean Village, crammed with fellow camera-wielding visitors, I detour to the Modern galleries up the riverside steps. Linking both museums is Charles Jencks' huge Landform, with its grassy hills and curving pond. There are days' worth of galleries, artists' rooms and sculpture gardens to explore here, but the afternoon is passing and I have more miles and museums to cover. Heading back along the leafy Water of Leith, I climb another steep flight of steps towards Haymarket. On the south lawn of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, a labyrinth winds through aromatic yarrow and knapweed. Around this flowering meadow, as part of an installation called On Sacred Ground, there are rough benches elegiacally listing threatened Scottish species: corncrake, hawfinch, wryneck, ring ouzel, capercaillie. I walk on through Princes Street Gardens, back past the Royal Academy building, and drop into the National Gallery (free) next door to see Van Gogh's impasto Olive Trees and William McTaggart's stormy seascapes. Up more steps, pausing to look back at distant views of the firth, and then down again across photogenic Victoria Street. Finally, I stroll through Greyfriars Kirkyard to reach the National Museum of Scotland (free, In 1998, Goldsworthy installed four sunset-coloured blocks of split sandstone on the museum roof, with its panoramic city views. But the blue skies have turned stormy. 'Our roof terrace is closed today – the weather is too dreich!' says a red sign by the lift. There's Hearth, a burned circle on a platform of salvaged wood from the museum's construction site. Stacked Whalebones is a pale ball of interlocking bones, the whole skeleton of a five-metre pilot whale found beached in Northumberland. Around golden bronze age torcs and silver Viking arm-rings, Roman carvings and flint arrowheads, the artist also designed Enclosure, two curving walls of reworked Edinburgh slates. Another backdrop is of stained Dumfriesshire clay like the Red Wall in the Fifty Years exhibition. Outside, the Edinburgh fringe is in full swing (until 25 August). Among the crowds are buskers, jugglers, unicyclists. With just one night to sample its anarchic offerings, I plunge into dodgy cabarets and sweaty comedies in tiny underventilated venues. At 9pm, I'm back at the National Museum for an accomplished Lloyd-Webber-esque musical about Van Gogh. Towards midnight, I head to Summerhall for a strange, polyphonic prequel to Hamlet by the Polish choral-theatre group Song of the Goat. The next day, as I walk to Edinburgh's Waverley station, there's a prismatic haze caught between the misty drizzle and breezy summer sun. It reminds me of Goldsworthy's 1980s photo series with titles like Rainbow Splash Hit Water With Heavy Stick Bright, Sunny, Windy. As the train speeds south, through Northumberland and North Yorkshire, I see with new eyes the wave-pounded cliffs and bale-studded headlands, the dry-stone walls and sheep-scattered patchwork dales.
