"Peddler of liars, factory of fake news": Shahzad Poonawalla slams Congress over caste census remarks

India Gazette17-06-2025
New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the party of spreading fake news and lies on the issue of caste census and India's global diplomatic matters.
His remarks came amid an ongoing political debate over the central government's stand on caste-based data collection.
In a briefing, Poonawalla said, 'Congress is a peddler of liars and a factory of fake news... Lying has become their characteristic... Their lies have been exposed -- first that India was not invited to G7 summit, and second that Pakistan's Asim Munir has been invited to the US Army Day and that it was a failure of India's policies.'
The BJP leader further accused Congress of deliberately misleading the public over the government's stand on the caste census. He said, 'Now Congress is on another lie. They are saying that the central government is taking a U-turn on the caste census... Various press releases of the government say that the caste census will be done.'
He also alleged that Congress has a history of neglecting the rights of the Other Backwards Classes (OBCs). 'Congress is spreading misinformation because it is in their DNA to take away the rights of the OBC,' Poonawalla added.
The statement came as political tensions remained high over the caste census demand, with the Congress accusing the BJP of avoiding concrete commitments, while the BJP maintained that the government has been transparent about its position.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed preparations for the upcoming Census of India, which is now officially set to include caste enumeration, as per the official statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The minister hailed this move as a 'historic decision' that corrected a 'historical wrong.'
The notification to conduct the Census was published in the official Gazette on Monday, following a high-level meeting held in Delhi, where the Home Minister reviewed the plan along with the Union Home Secretary, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG&CCI), and other senior officials.
The Population Census 2027 will begin with a reference date of March 1, 2027, for most parts of the country. The reference date for snow-bound and non-synchronous areas such as Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026.
According to the official statement, around 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and 1.3 lakh Census functionaries will be deployed for the exercise. This will be the first fully digital Census, using mobile apps and offering a self-enumeration option to citizens.
The last Census was conducted in 2011. A new round scheduled for 2021 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, despite all initial preparations being completed. (ANI)

Cabinet approves revised Income Tax Bill 2025, to be tabled in Parliament on August 11

The Cabinet has approved the revised Income Tax Bill, 2025, sources said on Friday. The approval comes weeks after a new version of the Income Tax Bill, incorporating most of the recommendations made by the Select Committee chaired by BJP MP Baijayant Panda, was submitted to the Cabinet. The revised new Income Tax Bill, 2025, will be tabled in the Parliament on Monday, August 11, the sources said. The Income-Tax Bill, 2025, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on February 13 to replace the existing Income-Tax Act, 1961, has been formally withdrawn. Before the House was adjourned, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman withdrew the earlier 'Income-Tax Bill, 2025', with the Select Committee having submitted its report on it. In Budget 2024, presented in July that year, the government proposed a comprehensive review of the Income-tax Act of 1961. The purpose was to make the Act concise and lucid and reduce disputes and litigation. (This is a developing story. Check back for updates)

‘If EC thinks it only answers to BJP, it must rethink': Priyanka Gandhi backs Rahul's poll fraud charge

NEW DELHI: Slamming the Election Commission, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday asked the poll body to probe Rahul Gandhi's poll rigging claims and said that it needs to rethink if it feels that its responsibility is only to the BJP. Priyanka Gandhi's attack on the poll body came after the chief electoral officers of at least three states on Thursday asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to share the names of electors he claimed were either included or excluded wrongfully from the voter lists along with a signed declaration for the poll authorities to initiate "necessary proceedings" in the matter. Election Commission (EC) sources said Rahul Gandhi should either sign a declaration under the Conduct of Election Rules and submit the list of people who he claims were either wrongfully included or removed from the voters' list or he should "stop misleading" the people of India and "stop making baseless allegations" against the poll authority. Asked about the issue, Priyanka Gandhi said, "Understand this, the affidavit they are asking for is under a law in which you have to give a petition within 30 days otherwise nothing will happen. So why are they asking for the affidavit? Such a big disclosure has been made. If it is unintentional, then investigate it." Why is the EC not giving voters' list in a machine readable format and why is it not investigating, she asked. "Instead you are saying sign an affidavit. Which is a bigger oath than what we take in Parliament? We have taken that oath, we are saying everything in public and are showing the evidence to you," Priyanka Gandhi told reporters in the Parliament House complex. Reiterating Rahul Gandhi's claims, she said over 1 lakh fake votes have been found in an assembly, which means whoever they vote for will win. On EC's critical comments, the Congress general secretary asked how does the poll body know that the claims are false when they have not been investigated. "The evidence is in front of them and they have to investigate it. How can they say it is wrong unless they investigate it? There can be no matter bigger than this," she said. "This is the democracy of our nation. It is not a joke. It is not about one party or another party. If they have not investigated it, they cannot say it is rubbish," she asserted. "I am sorry they have a bigger responsibility. If they feel their responsibility is only to the BJP and only to one party, they need to rethink it because as my brother said, a day will come when other people are in power and then those who have colluded in this kind of complete destruction of our democracy will have to answer for it," she said. They should be aware that they will have to answer for it, Priyanka Gandhi added. She said INDIA bloc leaders will decide together on how to go about the issue of poll rigging going forward. But it is clear that there is some wrongdoing in this matter, Priyanka Gandhi said. "This would be clear to you and the manner in which their leaders are responding has also made it clear. "If you go to a teacher and say cheating is happening, will the teacher slap you or say that it would be checked. Here they are abusing him (Rahul Gandhi) and then say sign an affidavit. If such a big 'kaand' is happening under your (EC) nose and you are not doing it, then investigate it," she said.

Need of the hour to revise creamy layer income ceiling for OBCs: Parliamentary panel

NEW DELHI: A parliamentary committee looking into the welfare of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) has said it was the "need of the hour" to revise the creamy layer income ceiling, saying the limit is excluding a large section of eligible OBC families from reservation benefits and government welfare schemes. In its eighth report presented to Parliament on Friday, the panel noted that the last revision of the income threshold from Rs 6.5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh per annum was carried out in 2017. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) rules require the ceiling to be reviewed every three years or sooner, if needed. "The present threshold is low, covering only a small segment of OBCs," the panel, chaired by BJP MP Ganesh Singh, said, adding inflation and rising incomes in even lower income groups had made an upward revision the "need of the hour". "The Committee is aware of the fact that the income limit for determining creamy layer for OBCs should be reviewed every three years or even before the stipulated period. However, the same has not been revised since 2017," it said. "The Committee, therefore, in no uncertain words, reiterate their recommendation for reviewing and accordingly revising the present creamy layer threshold limit to cover more and more persons from the OBCs as this would eventually help in raising their socio-economic condition to a satisfactory level," the panel said. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, however, told the committee that "there is no proposal under consideration" to revise the creamy layer limit. Another unresolved issue flagged by the panel is the absence of equivalence between posts in autonomous bodies and government positions for determining creamy layer status. The report said the lack of such equivalence has led to qualified OBC candidates, including those who cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination, being denied service allocation because their parents' salaries were counted without considering post equivalence.
