NIA arrests assailant involved in 2024 Manipur security post attack
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested one of the miscreants involved in the 2024 attack on a security post in the Moreh area of Manipur's Tengnoupal district, killing one policeman and injuring two others, an official said on Monday.
NIA sources said that Thangminlar Mate, a.k.a. Lenin Mate, a resident of Tengnoupal district, was nabbed on Sunday at Silchar in southern Assam, which shares an inter-state border with Manipur.
Mate's affiliation to any militant group, however, is not clear yet.
According to sources, the attack was carried out on January 17 last year, resulting in the death of one Manipur Police personnel.
Two other police personnel were also seriously injured in the attack.
The Silchar court has given NIA the transit remand custody of the accused, the first person to be arrested in the case for production before the agency's Special Court in Guwahati.
The NIA is continuing with its probe in the case.
Manipur police officials earlier had said that on January 17, 2024, armed militants orchestrated a violent attack on the state forces, using firearms and explosives in Moreh, Tengnoupal district.
In the incident, one personnel of 6th Manipur Rifles -- Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei was killed in the line of duty, while three police personnel sustained injuries.
Police officials earlier said that gunfight followed the attack in some other locations in Moreh as the security forces, mostly Manipur police commandos, launched a massive search operation for those involved in the attack on the police camp near the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Moreh.
Situated along the India-Myanmar border, Moreh is a Kuki-Zo-dominated town in Tengnoupal district.
The Integrated Check Post (ICP) Moreh, along the International Border between India and Myanmar, located at a distance of about 110 km from Manipur's capital Imphal, is the biggest trading route between the two countries.

26/11 Terror Attack: Delhi Court grants Tahawwur Rana a one-time phone call, seeks health report from Tihar
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): The Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday granted 26/11 Mumbai Terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana permission to make a single phone call to his family for the time being. The call will be strictly conducted in accordance with jail regulations and under the supervision of a senior official from the Tihar jail authorities, said the Court. The Additional Sessions Judge (NIA) Chander Jit Singh on Monday also sought a detail status report on Rana's health issues, which must be submitted within 10 days. In its response to the jail authorities, the NIA had approved permission for this one-time phone call. Furthermore, the court has also sought a detailed report from the jail authorities, clarifying their stance on whether Rana should be allowed regular phone calls in the future, as per the Jail Manual. On Friday, the court extended Rana's judicial custody, scheduling his next appearance for July 9. Due to security concerns, he was presented via virtual mode. On the last date of hearing, Rana personally addressed the court, requesting a hearing aid for an ear-related medical issue. Recently, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) collected voice and handwriting samples from Rana, who was extradited from the United States earlier this month. His legal aid counsel, Advocate Piyush Sachdev, confirmed that he fully complied with the court directive. The NIA had previously informed the court that Rana was confronted with substantial evidence related to the 26/11 attacks. The agency argued for further custody, citing his evasive behaviour during questioning and lack of cooperation. Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan and Special Public Prosecutor Narender Mann represented the NIA in the proceedings, while Advocate Piyush Sachdeva defended Rana. A 64-year-old Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin, Rana, was extradited recently in connection with his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The devastating attack, orchestrated by Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed over 170 lives and left hundreds injured. (ANI)

Court permits Tahawwur Rana to speak to kin over phone
A Delhi court on Monday (June 9, 2025) permitted Tahawwur Rana, the alleged mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, to make a one-time phone call to his family. Special Judge Chander Jit Singh of Patiala House Court ordered that the call will be conducted in under the supervision of a senior Tihar jail official. Rana has been asked to strictly adhere to jail rules. The Tihar jail authorities have also been asked to submit a fresh report on Rana's health within 10 days from Monday (June 9, 2025). The jail authorities will also file a report clarifying their stand on whether Rana should be allowed regular phone calls. Extradited by the United States to India on April 10, 64-year-old Rana is now facing trial in the case 17 years after the attacks that killed more than 166 people in 2008. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), probing the case, had charged him for the terror attack conspiracy with his friend David Headley, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) mastermind who carried out the planning and reconnaissance operations for the Mumbai attacks at the behest of LeT chief Hafiz Saeed. The central agency says that Rana was involved in the planning of the Mumbai attacks, assisting Headley in procuring a visa and creating a false identity so he could travel to India. He has been charged with criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government of India, murder, forgery and under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
