Gunman who killed 4 at Manhattan office building was targeting NFL headquarters, mayor says
Investigators believe Shane Tamura was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building's lobby but accidentally entered the wrong set of elevator banks, Adams said in interviews on Tuesday.
Four people, including an off-duty New York City police officer, were killed. Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested he had a grievance against the NFL over an unsubstantiated claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy. He had played football in high school in California nearly two decades ago.
The note claimed he had been suffering from CTE — the degenerative brain disease that has been linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma common in contact sports like football — and said his brain should be studied after he died, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.
It also specifically referenced the National Football League, the person said.
A motive has not been determined but investigators were looking into, based on the note, whether he might've specifically targeted the building because it is home to the NFL's headquarters.

According to ABC 7 New York, Hyman had fled into a fortified panic room concealed inside a bathroom. After a brief pause in the gunfire, she stepped out, possibly to see whether the coast was clear. Surveillance footage obtained by the outlet shows Tamura changing direction, seeing her, and immediately shooting her. She collapsed nearby. 'She was a hard worker. That's what they said,' 62-year-old Siva Subramaniam, the father of Julia's best friend from college, told The New York Post. "She was first in, last out." Tamura also fatally shot NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, 43, and building security guard Aland Etienne, 46, before shooting himself in the chest. A 41-year-old NFL employee was shot but survived. Roger Goodell was emotional on Thursday as he publicly addressed the deadly shooting that took place inside 345 Park Avenue, the building that houses the NFL's New York offices, earlier this week. The NFL commissioner did not attend Thursday's Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, but was back in New York attending the funeral of slain NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who, along with Blackstone exec Wesley LePatner, security guard Aland Etienne and Rudin Management employee Julia Hyman, were killed when a madman opened fire with an AR-15. 'It's a difficult thing, particularly when you're dealing with a senseless act like this,' Goodell said during an interview with NBC. 'There are no excuses for those senseless acts. They're hard for all of us to understand when it inflicts pain on people you know and people you care about and people that we deal with on a daily basis. That's particularly hard.'
