Peake has done a ton more TV: she played Veronica Ball in Channel 4's Shameless, Martha Costello in BBC One legal drama Silk, and Grace Middleton in BBC One drama series The Village. She's in that really weird (even for Black Mirror) black and white episode about the robotic dogs. She wrote and starred in a BBC Radio 4 play about Anne Scargill, who was married to Arthur. She used to play rugby for Wigan Ladies. And she pulled on a pair of hose to play Hamlet.
Back on the big screen, the Bolton-born Peake was the lead in 2017's Funny Cow, where her performance as a northern 70s stand-up was described as 'magnificent' by Mark Kermode in the Observer. She's in Mike Leigh's historical drama Peterloo as radical working class mother Nellie, and plays Samuel Beckett's bit on the side in 2023 biopic Dance First.
Now, in Words of War, she takes on the role of journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya, who was murdered in Russia in 2006. In this very publication Peake described her as 'a woman with immense courage and integrity who, despite numerous threats to her life, continued to be a blazing beacon of truth in a time and place where speaking truth was extremely dangerous'. Broadcast News: a romcom set in a TV studio that manages to make integrity sexy
'I am concerned about the garbage that is masquerading as television these days,' the legendary US news anchor Walter Cronkite declared in 1989. 'Most of it is real scandal tabloid journalism … absolutely, totally useless stuff.' Two years earlier Broadcast News was writing this on the wall. The decline of journalistic standards isn't a conventional backdrop for a romcom (His Girl Friday being another key exception) but it was a matter close to the heart of James L Brooks, who had come up through CBS as a news writer before his prolific TV career (via The Mary Tyler Moore Show and, later, The Simpsons). In the wake of the thunderous success of his film Terms of Endearment, Brooks returned to CBS for a period of rigorous research and latched on to the decorated news producer Susan Zirinsky – the main inspiration for his next film's indomitable heroine. Taking place amid the crossed wires and tense deadlines of a Washington news bureau, Broadcast News' love triangle converges on a news producer, Jane Craig (Holly Hunter), a quintessential hypercompetent career woman with disastrous romantic instincts. Tom Grunick (William Hurt), a freshly imported anchor, is the handsome jackass who represents everything she hates – though maybe she can fix him. The lovelorn best friend/nice guy is Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks), a diligent but fatally untelegenic news reporter who longs for primetime recognition. Early on Jane gives a speech at a conference decrying the celebrity status of news anchors and the encroachment of 'soft news', which is summarily dismissed by her audience of industry colleagues. Tom lends the only sympathetic ear, acutely aware that – as a rising anchor who can sell the news better than he can understand it – he's part of the problem. Their first romantic interaction is spectacularly fumbled. In Jane's hotel room Tom is too concerned with assuaging his guilt to notice Jane's advances. Jane has no interest in playing along, her contempt palpable. 'What do you want from me, permission to be fake?' she snaps. There's joy in watching intelligent, attractive people effortlessly trade barbs – 'I can't believe I just risked my life for a network that tests my face with focus groups' is a personal favourite – but the real strength of Brooks' screenplay lies how each characters trip over their own dysfunctions. There's an honesty to how Jane's consummate professionalism comes at the expense of her personal life, and how Aaron's underappreciated intelligence flips into resentment. Broadcast News manages to make integrity feel sexy. Hunter's impassioned lead performance sells the near-unattainable fantasy of being helplessly in love with your own work. Her stubbornness comes not from a place of arrogance but of principle; someone has to care, especially as the tides begin to shift across the media – as heralded by Tom's arrival in the bureau. Her personal impasse with Tom is only bridged when their professional commitments align: in one of the film's most electric sequences, Jane – helped by Aaron – dictates Tom's lines in his first live TV appearance, with the cinematographer, Michael Ballhaus, uniting them in split diopter compositions. The film doesn't play coy about the erotic implications of their synchronised performance, which Tom enthusiastically compares to great sex. These days the media landscape depicted in Broadcast News registers as a distant fantasy. There's certainly a cosy analogue nostalgia to indulge in, particularly in the slapstick spectacle of watching Joan Cusack race across the bureau, VHS tape in hand, to make sure a news segment makes it to air on time. As Brooks maps the early descent of broadcast journalism into lowest-common-denominator content and the gutting of media organisations, it's hard not to feel as though you're watching a horror movie, screaming at the teens not to go into the basement. But Broadcast News is far from cynical. In her steadfast refusal to be separated from her principles, Jane Craig continues to endure, reminding us that, in every aspect of our lives, there are boundaries that can never be crossed. Viewers of the ITV soap will know that the corrupt medic has been responsible for the deaths of Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) and Owen Michaels (Simon Haines) since he arrived in the village last year. Just as Tuesday's episode of the Yorkshire-based serial drew to a close, viewers were left shocked when John stepped away from the bar for a moment to make a phone call. He said: "Hey, it's me. I could do with some help again. I'll message you the details, but there's a loose end that needs tidying up. Tomorrow." The identity of the person on the other end was not revealed, but fans suspect that this means John could have had some sort of help in killing his fellow residents and they rushed to social media with their theories. It comes as John's exit from the show was reported with it thought the secret killer will soon face his downfall. One fan wrote on X: "So has someone helped John murder Nate? Who was he on the phone too at the end?" whilst another frustrated viewer simply asked: "What is John up to now?" A third fan said: "who is john calling ? Quite a mystery ! Im thinking!", whilst one perplexed viewer pointed out: "Like no one can overhear John on the phone. Surely he'd go outside to make the call." And a fourth viewer wrote: "Who is John speaking to when he says "It's me, I need your help" Is it Paddy running a "it's good to talk" helpline who he's ringing? Or is Anthony who could have been hiding in the cricket pavillion since he disappeared?" Another fan suggested that it may be a case of false identity, as they said: "Is John talking to the real John sugden ? If not who so many questions this guy is more complicated than the flipping Spaghetti Junction" All the drama comes after Aaron cheated on husband John with his ex-husband Robert, John's brother, on Monday. The pair were unable to hide their feelings any longer, but now Aaron's trying to cover up the betrayal. But with spoilers revealing Aaron will try to convince John to move away, wanting to run away from the drama with Robert, could his husband already know the truth? It's not entirely clear whether the listening device is till in the house, but it had been planted in the living room. Some fans say John removed it, but plenty others cannot remember this happening. So does this mean it's still there, and in the very room where Aaron confessed his feelings and shared a kiss with his ex? There's every chance, fans say, that John now knows the pair have slept together, and knows exactly how Aaron is feeling about Robert. Taking to social media, fans predicted this would be how John exposes them, with some convinced he already knows about the fling. One fan posted: "HOLD ON A SECOND. Aaron and Rob taking about their feelings in the living room… isn't John's snooping device still plugged in? God I hope he hears every word." Another fan said: "Yes I think it is still there." A third fan posted: "So surely Johns going to hear them kissing & hear Aaron telling Robert he's missed him (along with everything else) unless of course the listening device now coincidentally doesn't work?!" Moira Dingle's future on Emmerdale has been left hanging in the balance as it has been revealed she is at the mercy of a new villain who was supposed to be her friend Moira Dingle's future on Emmerdale has been left hanging in the balance now that she has become tied up with the villainous Celia Daniels. The fan favourite, who has been played by Natalie J. Robb since 2009, is known to viewers of the ITV soap as a keen farmer, and viewers have watched her agricultural career go from strength to strength over the years, but on Tuesday's episode, it became apparent that all that will soon come crashing down. Fans will know that Moira had been feeling optimistic about a new farming contract that was on the horizon, and she thought that Celia (Jaye Griffiths) had been on her side with all the help she was supposedly giving her. But on the latest episode of the Yorkshire-based serial that that is not the case at all. Early in the morning, Moira was told to 'brace herself' for a big deal supposedly coming in from a hotel, and Celia offered to drop the latest order herself, and was reminded that payment was needed for the first one. Celia then called round to drop the bombshell that the contract had fallen through, fumbling an excuse about the chef not being happy with the produce. Moira fumed: "So now you're telling me we've got to write off thousands of pounds that we can't afford?" and Celia claimed that was now the 'only option' going forward. It comes as Vanessa kicked Charity out of her house just weeks ago after their kiss, which had sparked hopes for a Vanity reunion on the ITV soap. Moira said: "Every day is a struggle, and now this. Maybe I should just tap out before I'm knocked out!" But that was not the only twist in the episode as viewers learned of the deceit the hard-working farmer has been put under. Celia then made the trip up to Home Farm, and it became apparent that she has been working with Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) and Kim Tate (Claire King) to sabotage Moira's business this whole time. She coldly told Joe: "I have an update. I've just told Moira she's laid out thousands of pounds on an order that won't be paid. She delivered three orders without asking for a penny upfront, and she didn't read the contract properly. The woman's fool." Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) worked out what was going on and Joe confirmed that it was all being done 'under Kim's express instructions'. Joe then asked Celia just how much longer Moira was likely to last in the business now that all this has been set up against her. She replied: "She won't make her water fine payment, let alone feed her livestock so my guess that it will all be over a week," before it was revealed that the con woman has a deal in place with Kim to guarantee her six months rent-free with the option to lease extra land. Joe explained that it is Kim's intention that Moira will have 'no choice' but to sell and reminded Dawn that the ruthless millionairess 'always gets what she wants' in life. But this is far from the end of the story for the Dales' latest villain as the actress issued a warning to viewers. Jaye, who previously starred in Casualty and The Bill, said: "The Emmerdale audience are finally starting to see the true extent of Celia's personality. She's great fun to play but she is ruthless and there is plenty more to come!" Recently, Moira actress Natalie J Robb hinted to press that there the whole thing could have gone either way with the recent ordeal her alter-ego has been put under. She said: "She starts a kind of different approach, she starts to befriend her and Moira actually quite likes her in the end. "The question is, Celia could be working with someone else to try and push her out, but it's whether Celia will stick with that. She's a force to be reckoned with, she's not somebody you would go against!"
