Bukit Aman to record statements from three senior police officers in Zara case

By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: A team from the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) will soon travel to Sabah to record statements from three senior police officers involved in the preliminary investigation into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the department has opened a disciplinary investigation paper (KST) against the district police chief, holding the rank of Superintendent; the district criminal investigation division chief, with the rank of ASP; and an investigating officer, with the rank of Inspector. They are suspected of non-compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the investigation into the case. 'The Bukit Aman JIPS officers will travel there within a day or two to record statements from these three officers. The investigation concerns non-compliance with SOPs in the Zara Qairina case and the supervision of investigating officers,' he said. He said this to reporters after the launch of the book 'Antologi Puisi Makan Suap' at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, last night. Ayob Khan said strict action would be taken against any investigating officers and supervisors found to have violated the investigation SOPs. Ayob Khan said that, so far, the three senior officers involved are continuing to carry out their duties as usual. Last Wednesday, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar, at a press conference, said that the initial findings of the Bukit Aman Special Task Force investigation found elements of non-compliance with investigation procedures during the early probe into the death of Zara Qairina. EAIC Recommends Sop For Immigration Officers' Body Camera Use, Storage
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) – The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) has recommended the establishment of a specific standard operating procedure (SOP) on the use and storage of body camera recordings by Immigration Department officers and personnel conducting enforcement operations. The EAIC said the recommendation to the Immigration director-general was aimed at ensuring transparency in the execution of duties and preventing any future allegations from the public. 'The implementation of this SOP is important to ensure the integrity and accountability of the enforcement agency, as well as to strengthen public confidence in the agency,' the EAIC said in a statement today. According to the statement, the EAIC received a complaint regarding allegations of rough treatment by Kuala Lumpur Immigration officers against an individual during an enforcement operation on June 25 last year. Following this, an investigation was conducted under subsection 27(4) of the EAIC Act 2009. The EAIC said the investigation found that the body camera recording could not be retrieved as the data was stored for only 30 days, while the closed-circuit television (CCTV) recording at the location could not be obtained as the CCTV equipment had been disconnected immediately after the raid. According to the statement, all Kuala Lumpur Immigration officers and personnel involved in the operation had given statements denying any rough treatment or assault against the individual concerned. 'Based on the statements, the complainant was unable to recognise or identify any officer or personnel alleged to have acted roughly. 'The police investigation paper opened in connection with this incident was classified as No Further Action by the Deputy Public Prosecutor,' the statement said.

Mention of Naim Daniel's sexual assault case set for Sept 19
PUTRAJAYA: The Sessions Court here has set Sept 19 for mention of a case involving singer Naim Daniel, who was charged with committing sexual assault against a 17-year-old girl at a hotel. Judge M. Kunasundary set the date during a closed-door proceeding when the case came up for mention before her on Monday (Aug 18). Naim Daniel, whose full name is Muhammad Naim Daniel Baharin, 28, was alleged to have committed the offence at a hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, at 8.56am on May 19 this year. He was first charged with the offence on June 17 and had pleaded not guilty. The charge, under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), carries a sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment and whipping upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shaharuddin appeared for the prosecution, while Naim Daniel was represented by lawyers Nur Syafiah Athirah Ahmad Shafique, Mohd Irwan Sumadi and Datuk Amirul Ridzuan Hanif. - Bernama
