Mark Zuckerberg says Meta AI has 1 billion monthly active users

CNBCa day ago

Meta's AI assistant now has 1 billion monthly active users across the company's family of apps, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday at the company's annual shareholder meeting.
The "focus for this year is deepening the experience and making Meta AI the leading personal AI with an emphasis on personalization, voice conversations and entertainment," Zuckerberg said.
The artificial intelligent assistant's 1 billion milestone comes after the company in April released a standalone app for the tool.
The plan is for Meta to keep growing the product before building a business around it, Zuckerberg said on Wednesday. As Meta AI improves overtime, Zuckerberg said "there will be opportunities to either insert paid recommendations" or offer "a subscription service so that people can pay to use more compute."
In February, CNBC reported that Meta was planning to debut a standalone Meta AI app during the second quarter and test a paid-subscription service akin to rival chat apps like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
"It may seem kind of funny that a billion monthly actives doesn't seem like it's at scale for us, but that's where we're at," Zuckerberg told shareholders.
During the Meta shareholder meeting, investors voted on 14 different items related to the company's business, nine of which were shareholder proposals covering topics such as child safety, greenhouse gas emissions and a proposed bitcoin treasury assessment.
Shareholder proposal 8, for example, was submitted by JLens, which is an investment advisor and affiliate of the Anti-Defamation League, and called for Meta to prepare an annual report detailing and addressing hate content, including antisemitism, on its services following January policy changes that relaxed content-moderation guidelines.
Early voting results on Wednesday showed the proposals that Meta's board did not recommend were unlikely to pass, including one calling for the company to end its dual-class share structure, which gives Zuckerberg significant voting power. Meanwhile, the voting items that the board favored, including those pertaining to approving the company's board of director nominees and an equity incentive plan, were likely to pass, based on the preliminary results.
Meta said final polling results will be released within four business days on the company's website and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Jon Hamm Admits He Would Have Done Anything for Role in 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Jon Hamm had no problem not being the 'star' of the 2022 action film Top Gun: Maverick. On the heels of his massive success on the AMC drama series Mad Men, the actor told GQ magazine that he just wanted to work on projects that were meaningful to him. 'I knew it would be unlikely to have another experience like Mad Men,' Hamm told the outlet in a May 2025 interview. 'And I was okay with that. Some people don't even get the one. So I got one. I got all the awards I needed. [After it ended] I was like, 'I'm good.' I just want to work with people I find compelling.' Hamm also revealed that he did what he had to do to get cast in the 2022 Top Gun sequel. 'That was an interesting one, because there's no mistaking who's the star of that movie,' he said of the film's lead, Tom Cruise. 'I saw the original film when I was 14 years old. So, I would've f---ing made coffee on that set.' 'My agents were like, 'I don't know—it's not a very big part. Do you really want to do this?'' the actor added. 'And I go, 'Dude, it's Top Gun 2. Like, what?' That movie meant a lot to me personally. I told them, 'If you guys f--- this deal, you're all fired.'' In the sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, Hamm played Vice Admiral Beau 'Cyclone' Simpson opposite Cruise's Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. The film, released in May 2022, was a massive box office hit, grossing $1.48 billion worldwide, per CNBC. Cruise has not ruled out a third run for the Top Gun franchise. In May 2025, he told the Today Show Australia he had several ideas in the works. 'We're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick,' the actor said.

WhatsApp Adds Status Functionalities, Including More Music Sharing Options

WhatsApp's adding some new creative options to Status, its Stories-like option for the messaging app, including updated Layout option, more music sharing functionality, photo stickers, and more. First off, WhatsApp's added a new collage option within its Layout tools, which enables you to convert up to six images into a combined frame. Users can place the images in the collage however they like, with the Layout tools making it easier to present the display in variable formats. WhatsApp's also adding new music sharing options, including the ability to turn a song into a music sticker, and add it to a separate status post: 'like a selfie, for extra pizzazz.' WhatsApp launched music for Status updates back in March, which enables users to share popular music clips to accompany their Stories-like updates. It's also testing music sharing from Spotify, and given the platform's massive reach, it could become a key driver of music promotion and engagement. WhatsApp's also adding Photo Stickers, which, as it sounds, will enable you to turn a photo into a sticker, and add it to your status. Similar to the same functionality on Instagram, you'll be able to edit the sticker's size in the composer, so you can use your photos in new ways within your updates. Finally, WhatsApp's also rolling out its own version of the 'Add Yours' sticker for Status. As per WhatsApp: 'Choose a picture and use the Add Yours sticker to invite friends in on the conversation. When they respond to your prompt, they can share it to their status and hear what their community has to say, too.' Which is again similar to the same on IG Stories, with Status gradually catching up in terms of functionality, ensuring greater expressive capacity within the DM focused app. WhatsApp's been gaining popularity, particularly in the U.S., where it now has over 100 million users. The app is also, of course, the most used messaging app in the world, with over 3 billion active users, which gives Meta a huge market advantage in rolling out new tools like this to many users who don't have access to other social media apps. As such, expanding WhatsApp's functionality could also lead to more opportunities, both for Meta and creators/brands in the app. So while these may seem like fairly simple updates, given their availability in other apps, they are significant in the broader development of WhatsApp as a connective tool.

Two of Silicon Valley's Most Prestigious Venture Capital Firms Just Plowed $135 Million Into Sam Altman's Crypto Project. What Do They See That Wall Street Doesn't?

Sam Altman of OpenAI is also the co-founder of an identity management project called World Network. World Network is looking to use biometric hardware to help combat the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) bots online. As part of the project, World Network also employs a transactional layer known as Worldcoin -- a cryptocurrency available to investors. 10 stocks we like better than Worldcoin › The first half of 2025 has been anything but predictable in the stock market. It seems like ages ago that concerns around Chinese start-up DeepSeek and the intensifying competitive landscape in artificial intelligence (AI) sent shockwaves across the capital markets. As investors know all too well, just about the only things economists have been talking about for almost two months now are tariffs. In the wake of all this uncertainty in the equity market, some astute investors have turned elsewhere. Specifically, the cryptocurrency market has started to attract some new life. Although Bitcoin seems poised to reach new all-time highs, venture capital (VC) juggernauts Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z) and Bain Capital just jointly plowed $135 million into a relatively new token called Worldcoin (CRYPTO: WLD) -- an initiative that was co-founded by Sam Altman, the chief executive officer of OpenAI. Let's explore what Worldcoin is and assess why two of Silicon Valley's most prestigious VC firms just invested in the fledgling crypto project during this period of pronounced market uncertainty. Worldcoin is a cryptocurrency token that runs on the Ethereum blockchain. It serves as the transactional foundation for a project known as World Network. To put it simply, Altman and his co-founders are seeking to build a community (the World Network) that helps solve a use case known as "proof of human." Essentially, by becoming a member of the World Network, each user is then granted a unique identifier known as their custom World ID. In an effort to combat the same user signing up twice or having the network comprised by artificial intelligence (AI) bots, World IDs are verified using a technology called iris biometrics (eye scanning). Before joining The Motley Fool, I spent a decade working in investment banking as well as leading various financial projects at technology start-ups. Anecdotally speaking, I've seen VC investors become intrigued by ideas that may come across as off the beaten path. I see World Network as no different. On the surface, World Network parallels something out of an Orwellian novel. But digging a little deeper into its purpose, I can understand the need for solving the proof of human (PoH) use case. In its initial whitepaper, World Network outlines certain functions (such as voting online) that are currently difficult to perfect due to potential breaches of security protocols. To me, there is an opportunity here for World Network to touch a number of important addressable markets, such as digital identification, financial fraud, cybersecurity, and how each of these stitch together through the broader AI fabric. There are some reports suggesting that interest is high for World IDs. Hence, there may have been a need for a capital infusion to fund the resources required to fulfill demand. With that said, I can't help but think the recent $135 million purchase of Worldcoin by A16Z and Bain Capital is anything more than a form of hedging. Said a different way, investing in the stock market right now is likely unattractive for institutional investors. Since the venture realm is inherently risky in the first place, I think it makes more sense for funds to double down on existing portfolio opportunities, as opposed to allocating any dry powder to new start-ups with little to no traction or volatile stocks. Broadly speaking, the cryptocurrency landscape is incredibly volatile. Even established cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin often display meme-like behavior as investors chase momentum for no tangible reason. This can make the price action of cryptocurrencies highly unpredictable. Following news of the investment by A16Z and Bain Capital, Worldcoin rocketed by roughly 40%. Although these gains have retreated a bit, the crypto is still trading at levels that suggest some momentum is still holding (or HODLing). One big concern I have about investing in Worldcoin is how the legal and regulatory environment will affect World Network's ability to scale in the long run. While Altman's prominent position in the broader AI landscape could serve as an asset, I still see the project as more of an uphill battle right now. Although I understand why VCs are intrigued with Worldcoin, the majority of investors don't have the same financial flexibility as these funds. Ultimately, I think investing in Worldcoin is highly speculative (even for crypto!), and I would pass on the opportunity right now.
