Red Sox 4, White Sox 2: Victory at the finish line

Photo ByFor the first time since 2017, the Red Sox have won the Marathon Monday game! The script of today's game felt really similar to the whole series. Score early, hold on for absolute dear life. Credit goes to Aroldis Chapman for taking down the revenge at-bat for Bobby Dalbec—that looked weird seeing him in another uniform. Dalbec striking out felt like a little bit of poetry. In any case, a 13th win of the season feels really good to keep holding serve in the AL East.
Three Studs
Walker Buehler (Win, 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K)
His first inning was rocky but once he settled down he was outstanding. It's exactly the type of outing they need consistently from a middle of the order rotation guy.
Trevor Story (3-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run scored)
He may be the most consistent member of this Red Sox squad in 2025. Solid and contributing all the way around.
Kristian Campbell (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB)
A fantastic day at the dish for Campbell, who's looking more and more comfortable at the big league level with every series come and gone.
Three Duds
Triston Cass (0-for-4)
I feel so bad for Triston because I know how much he's beating himself up for it. He's had a rough season so far and today was no exception.
Carlos Narvaez (0-for-4)
I don't know if he has much competition right now between Blake Sabol and Yasmani Grandal warming up in Worcester, but today wasn't a great day compared to the rest of the series for Narvaez.
Wilyer Abreu (0-for-3, 1 BB, 3 Ks)
Not a golden sombrero but a silver one? Maybe just a regular old straw hat one? Three Ks in the game isn't pretty.
Play of the Game
A home run is flashy, but give me Campbell's two-run single in the third. Any time you have the bases loaded, you have to take something from it—especially with what feels like a creeping issue with offense with RISP. Padding the lead for the victory is worthy of a game-making play.

"The Password" Jhostynxon Garcia called up to Majors by Boston Red Sox

Red Sox prospect Jhostynxon Garcia – who is fittingly nicknamed "The Password" – has been called up to the big leagues. Boston called up the outfielder from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday ahead of a crucial four-game series against the New York Yankees. Garcia is not in Thursday night's lineup in the Bronx, but will wear No. 51 for the Red Sox. He's the No. 3 prospect in Boston's farm system, and has taken the roster spot of outfielder Wilyer Abreu, who was placed on the 10-Day Injured List with a right calf strain. The Red Sox posted a video of Garcia getting the good news from Worcester manager Chad Tracy on Thursday: Red Sox fans have been enamored with the 22-year-old Garcia all season thanks to his incredible nickname. He's known as "The Password" because of the spelling of his first name, which is pronounced Yos-TIN-son if you want to say it rather than try to spell it out. The native of Venezuela initially joined the Boston franchise as an international free agent in 2019. He quickly climbed the Red Sox system over the last two years, starting the 2024 season Single-A before finishing the year at Double-A. Garcia began this season with Portland but was called up to Triple-A Worcester in late March. In his 66 games with the WooSox, Garcia slashed .303/.367/.564 with 17 home runs, 12 doubles, and three triples to go with 56 RBI and 52 runs scored. He mainly played in the outfield in the minors, with 73 games in center field, 15 in right field, and three in left field between Portland and Worcester this season. Garcia recently started to do some work at first base, and played his first game at the new position for Worcester this past Sunday. Boston also moved on from struggling infielder Abraham Toro on Thursday. Toro was designated for assignment, while David Hamilton was recalled from Worcester to take his spot on the roster. Toro helped the Red Sox stay afloat after first baseman Triston Casas was lost for the season in early May, when he slashed 296/.296/.537 for the month. But his numbers dipped in each month since, and he hit just .137 in his 14 games in August. In his final at-bat for the Red Sox, Toro grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the 10th inning of the team's 4-3, 11-inning loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. Hamilton hasn't been much better in the Majors, with the speedy infielder slashing just .174/.227/.265 in his 69 game for Boston. But Toro was redundant on the Red Sox roster after veteran first baseman Nathaniel Lowe was signed earlier this week.

Red Sox promote prospect Jhostynxon Garcia, place OF Wilyer Abreu on injured list

NEW YORK (AP) — After calling up highly-rated prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer in June, the Red Sox added another prospect Thursday when they recalled outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia from Triple-A Worcester. Garcia was called up to replace Wilyer Abreu, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain. Abreu originally was injured Sunday and the move is retroactive to Monday. The 22-year-old Garcia signed with the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent from Venezuela in 2019 and is Boston's No. 3 prospect according to which also ranks him as the 77th overall prospect in baseball. He was given the nickname 'The Password' by fans on social media due to the spelling of his first name. 'He swings a lot,' manager Alex Cora said about Garcia before the Red Sox opened a four-game series with the Yankees. 'Drives the ball to right-center, can do that with two strikes. He's a great defender and a good baserunner.' Garcia was not in the starting lineup Thursday but is likely to start in center field Friday. Garcia has split this season between Double-A Portland and Worcester and hit .289 with 20 homers, 73 RBIs and an .875 OPS while primarily starting in center field. With Worcester, Garcia is hitting .303 with 17 homers and 56 RBIs. Abreu is hitting .253 with a team-leading 22 homers and 69 RBIs in 108 games. Cora said he did not get any testing but is optimistic Abreu will miss the minimum amount of time. 'I think it's the right move and hopefully he'll be back with us as soon as possible,' Cora said. Promoting Garcia and putting Abreu on the IL was among five roster moves for the Red Sox, who began Thursday with eight losses in their last 12 games and trail the Yankees by two games for the AL's first wild-card. Infielder David Hamilton was recalled from Worcester along with pitcher Richard Fitts. Boston also designated infielder Abraham Toro for assignment. Hamilton, who hit eighth and started at second base Thursday, is hitting .174 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 69 games this season. He also has 17 stolen bases in 21 chances after stealing 33 bases in 98 games last season. Toro hit .239 with seven homers and 27 RBIs in 77 games. He batted .271 before the All-Star break but hit .171 over his last 25 games. 'We're not here without him,' Cora said about Toro. 'He did an amazing job.' Fitts is 1-4 with a 4.83 ERA in 10 starts for the Red Sox, who acquired him from the Yankees for Alex Verdugo in December 2023. He last started for Boston on July 28 in Minnesota and was 2-1 with a 4.00 ERA in six starts at Worcester. Walker Buehler, who is 7-7 with a 5.40 ERA in 22 starts, is slated to start Monday in Baltimore but Cora said the Red Sox had not talked about it yet. ___ AP MLB:

Yankees-Red Sox finally has the ingredients again to reawaken dormant rivalry

Access the Yankees beat like never before Don't miss Greg Joyce's text messages from The Bronx and beyond — he's giving Sports+ subscribers the inside buzz on the Yankees. Sign Up Now It lies dormant sometimes, the way volcanos do. Mount Vesuvius, remember, was still and inactive for a thousand years. The citizens of Pompeii and Herculaneum believed for centuries that they'd heard her last rumble. The citizens of Pompeii and Herculaneum, alas, were incorrect. And around 79 AD, Vesuvius showed them just how wrong they were. Advertisement Red Sox/Yankees is downright – is Vesuvian a word? Let's make it a word – Vesuvian in that way. When you are in the middle of the chronic rumble, you have a hard time believing it will ever be quiet ever again. And then it does – a few years sometimes, a few decades, more – but we in New York and New England have learned our lessons. It will be back.
