A cool, gritty Greek taverna has landed in the Shire – here's why you need to check it out

Say yasou to Homer Rogue Taverna – Cronulla 's newest 100-seat Athenian restaurant and wine bar from local legends Harry and Mario Kapoulas (yep, the brothers behind HAM café). Fresh from a culinary journey through Athens (we're sensing parallels to Homer's The Odyssey), they've brought back the Greek capital's culture and flavour to The Shire – minus the Mykonos clichés.
Homer is gritty, grungy and gloriously unpolished – hence the 'rogue' in its name. The fitout is deliberately unpretentious; we're talking industrial concrete, mid-century chairs, a graffitied wall and a glorious three-metre wine fridge you're encouraged to explore yourself. The music is a vibe – you might even find a bouzouki player meandering between tables.
The food? Made to share. Head chef Kirri Mouat (ex- Icebergs) and chef James Watson have eschewed fine-dining fare in favour of a menu full of Athenian attitude. There's charcoal-roasted chicken souvla, spanakopita, hand-rolled dolmades, saganaki flatbreads and family recipes like Mum's moussaka.
Feeling adventurous? Try the koulouri sesame (Greek bagel) with tirokafteri dip, the beef stifado (stew) wrapped in crisp chicken skin to resemble a cigar, or baked manouri cheese in kataifi pastry drizzled with hot honey. Yep, that custom-built wood-fire oven is working overtime.
To drink, there's Greek coffee, ouzo and mini Martinis. The wine list has a good balance of Greek and Australian drops, with Greek varietals like savatiano served by the glass or carafe. They've also teamed up with Young Henrys to brew their exclusive Homer's Epic Lager.
At Homer, bookings are recommended – but walk-ins are welcome. So, breeze in from the beach, share a few plates, sip on something spirited – and relax. As owner Harry puts it, 'At its heart, it's about people coming together for a good time, good food and good drinks, with an atmosphere that reflects that.'
These are the best new restaurants in Sydney.

Strictly Come Dancing has announced six celebrities who will be hitting the ballroom later this year, but one in particular has excited professional dancer Dianne Buswell Strictly Come Dancing's Dianne Buswel l has branded a 2025 contestant 'extremely cool' as Doctor Who enthusiasts were left 'screaming' following a major announcement. ‌ With mere weeks remaining before the annual BBC programme kicks off, the initial quartet of celebrities were unveiled on Monday (August 11). ‌ The opening reveal caught supporters off guard as Harry Aikines-Aryeetey was disclosed during an instalment of children's news show Newsround. Known as Nitro, Harry is most famous for taking part in the Bradley and Barney Walsh edition of Gladiators. ‌ Additionally, Harry is a multiple gold medal-winning Team GB sprinter, who became the first competitor to secure gold medals in both 100 and 200 metres at the World Youth Championships. "After the Christmas Special, it was so nice I just had to do it twice! I'm so excited to be part of the Strictly family this series and I'm ready to give it all I've got. I'll be bringing tons of energy to light up the dance floor. Let's hope I'm as quick picking up the routines as I am on the track," he said. Later during the evening, Strictly enthusiasts were urged to watch The One Show as three additional contestants were being revealed by Roman Kemp and Alex Scott. ‌ The opening member of the trio disclosed was Love Island champion Dani Dyer, with the daughter of EastEnders icon Danny Dyer wed to Jarrod Bowen. On joining Strictly Come Dancing, Dani said: "Getting the opportunity to be on Strictly is the second most amazing thing I've done this year! I feel very very blessed and cannot wait to get my dancing shoes on." The third and final celebrity revealed on the magazine programme was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a former footballer who represented Leeds United, Atlético Madrid and Chelsea during his playing career. ‌ Following his retirement, Jimmy has established himself as a recognisable figure in football commentary for leading UK sports broadcasters, taken charge of clubs including Burton Albion and Northampton Town and worked as an assistant coach with the England national squad. "Swapping the pitch for the ballroom is certainly not something I've done before but I'm looking forward to tackling a fun challenge! Bring on a new type of footwork, with hopefully no own goals," he joked. Nevertheless, it was the reveal of Doctor Who icon Alex Kingston that seems to have generated the greatest buzz across social media platforms. ‌ Following her rise to fame on the medical drama ER as Dr Elizabeth Corday, Alex went on to portray one of the legendary sci-fi programme's most beloved characters. Featured on Doctor Who from 2008 to 2015, Alex brought River Song, aka The Doctor's Wife, to life alongside three different Doctors on television and remains active in audio adventures and literary works. Alex has also appeared in Douglas Is Cancelled, Treason, Gilmore Girls, Boudica, Lost in Austen, Dodger, A Discovery of Witches, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and Arrow. Her impressive theatre credits include portraying Lady Macbeth and Nurse Ratchet in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. On the official Strictly Instagram page, Dianne, who claimed the Glitterball Trophy with blind comedian Chris McCausland last year, captured everyone's sentiments. She posted: "Extremely cool love this!" To which Alex, who is presently in Italy, responded: "So excited to get dancing!". ‌ Adding to the praise was Motsi Mabuse, who penned: "Welcome to the Strictly family, Alex! Can't wait to see your personality shine on that dance floor, here's to sparkle, rhythm, and unforgettable moments! Woop Woop." Countless Doctor Who enthusiasts couldn't hide their delight as they anticipate discovering whether Alex excels at dancing as much as she does at fighting aliens. @bobby_seagull declared: "Was such a big fan of hers on Doctor Who!" @mommagledders shared: "I love her so much! She would be great with Johannes!". @stephlhulme penned: "Ahhh! I am a big Whovian and this announcement has made my day." @richardfrankscomedy noted: "Such a cool signing." @giselle_barajas1234 exclaimed: "DOCTOR WHO FANS ARE SCREAMING. YES ALEX." @calum_creates suggested: "I know it's been done before, but please can Alex dance to the Doctor Who theme!"

'I worked for King Charles – this is what royals really think of Prince Harry announcement'

EXCLUSIVE: Former royal butler Grant Harrold thinks that Harry and Meghan will likely be "more careful" not to cause any "further upset", but there's one thing that the Royal Family dread A former royal butler has weighed in on what he reckons is the Royal Family's "biggest concern" regarding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix deal. It comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they would be extending their lucrative deal with the streaming giants, in what was described as a "multi-year, first look deal". ‌ In this new partnership, Netflix can approve or turn down any projects before anybody else, an agreement the New York Times described as a "first-look deal" with the couple, who now have "more options" but "less investment". ‌ It stands to reason that the royals might be apprehensive about the prospect with a range of Harry and Meghan-helmed TV and film projects on the horizon. ‌ However Grant Harrold, who worked as a butler for King Charles, thinks there may be less to worry about this time. Indeed, he suggests that Harry and Meghan will likely be "more careful" not to cause any "further upset", but there's one thing they really don't want to see again. ‌ Grant, speaking on behalf of OLBG, said: "I do think they will start being more careful not to cause further upset as they move into their future business ventures. 'If they cause any more damage with these programmes it will impact any on-going attempts to build bridges. 'I think the Royal Family are beyond this now. I don't think they'll be surprised or disappointed by it, because they're used to them doing what they want now. Their biggest concern will be another tell-all documentary on their fallouts with the family.' ‌ In the original arrangement five years ago, the Sussexes, who stepped away from their royal duties for a new life in California in 2020, landed an eye-watering deal reportedly worth more than 100 million dollars (£74 million). Announcing the latest deal on Monday, Meghan said: 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As ever brand. My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.' ‌ It comes before the grand premiere of season two of With Love, Meghan, which is due to air this month. In the latest instalment of her lifestyle programme, the Duchess is set to grace our screens with a "fun and heartwarming" season. It promises "celebrity chefs, talented artists, and beloved friends" as they take on some "hands-on adventures" that will reportedly be packed with "laughter and discovery". As part of the first deal, Harry and Meghan produced a number of programmes that spanned everything from scripted series to lifestyle, with the shows also including Polo, Heart of Invictus, Harry and Meghan and Live to Lead. Harry and Meghan would be a phenomenal success, scooping 23.4 million views when it aired in December 2022. It was so popular that it became the most viewed documentary over its initial four days.
