Bako Research Station Bolsters Sarawak's Biodiversity Stewardship

KUCHING, July 14 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government has strengthened its commitment to tropical biodiversity research and conservation with the official launch of the Bako Research Station, located about 30 kilometres from here, today.
The State Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, described the Bako Research Station as more than just a physical facility as it is a vital platform for knowledge exchange, scientific innovation and long-term efforts to protect Sarawak's rich biodiversity.
'The station's impact goes beyond Bako National Park. Its research capabilities will benefit SFC (Sarawak Forestry Corporation) and surrounding communities outside the park's boundaries,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) statement today.
A product of strategic collaboration between Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and the SFC, he said the research station aims to serve as a hub for scientific discovery and environmental stewardship.
'Findings by researchers and students here can help SFC better manage national parks throughout Sarawak. We must find ways to manage these parks that balance ecosystem preservation with the needs of nearby communities,' he said.
Len Talif hoped that the new research station would serve as a catalyst for broader public understanding and support for conservation, as he acknowledged that awareness among local communities about the value of national parks remains limited.
He said the partnership between UNIMAS and SFC is expected to elevate Sarawak's standing in global biodiversity research and strengthen both institutions' international profiles.
'There is a wealth of knowledge here at Bako that we can share with the world. We have achieved notable success in this field, and it's time to build on that,' he said.
The Bako Research Station is equipped with research laboratories, field equipment storage, and fully equipped teaching and learning facilities to support both academic and field-based studies.

Agriculture Ministry unveils new paddy varieties MR CL3 and MR CL4 to tackle weedy rice issue

PASIR SALAK, July 14 — The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) through the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) today introduced two new padi varieties to address the weedy rice issue in the country. Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the development of the new MR CL3 and MR CL4 varieties was the result of a strategic collaboration between Mardi and BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd over the past 20 years. 'MR CL3 and MR CL4 mature earlier, at 99 days, and have a yield potential of over seven tonnes per hectare,' he said during the launch of the new Clearfield padi varieties at the Felcra Berhad Seed Centre here. Also present were KPKM secretary-general Datuk Seri Isham Ishak, Perak Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun, MARDI Governing Board chairman Dr Azman Ismail and Mardi director-general Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani. Mohamad said both varieties are also resistant to leaf and neck blast diseases and can be utilised under current KPKM initiatives such as the five padi planting seasons in two years programme and the Large-Scale Smart Padi Field (Smart SBB) programme. As for the commercialisation of the new varieties, he said it would be carried out through the Clearfield Production System, which includes padi varieties, imidazolinone herbicide (Trek) and stewardship guidelines, to tackle the weedy rice issue. He added that the MR CL3 and MR CL4 varieties were specifically bred to be resistant to imidazolinone herbicides. Weedy rice, also known as 'padi angin' in Malaysia, is a problematic weed that can significantly reduce crop yields. Prof Dr Mas Fawzi Appointed As 5th Vice-chancellor Of UTHM

JOHOR BAHRU, July 14 (Bernama) -- Prof Dr Mas Fawzi Mohd Ali has been appointed as the fifth vice-chancellor of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) for a two-year term effective today. The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) in a statement today said the appointment was made based on his expertise and extensive experience in engineering and university governance. Mas Fawzi, 51, holds a Bachelor's degree in Electromechanical Systems from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, United Kingdom (1997) and a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Research) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2007). In 2009, he obtained a Doctor of Engineering in Earth and Life Environmental Engineering from Tokushima University, Japan. Throughout his academic career, he has held several key positions, including deputy dean at the Centre for Graduate Studies and Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering; director of the Strategic Planning and Risk Management Office; and assistant vice-chancellor for strategic and corporate affairs at UTHM. 'He also has industry experience, having served as a calibration engineer at Samsung Electronics Display Sdn Bhd and as an industrial engineer at Sharp-Roxy Electronics Sdn Bhd before joining the public service in 2004,' the statement said. MoHE, in the same statement, expressed confidence that Mas Fawzi's combined experience in administration and industry will enable him to steer UTHM into becoming a respected centre of knowledge that is both innovative and in line with current needs. At the same time, the ministry also extended its appreciation to former UTHM vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Ir Ts Dr Ruzairi Abdul Rahim for his service and leadership throughout his tenure. -- BERNAMA
