Why Texas football enters Arch Manning era with lofty expectations
Cedric Golden and Houston Chronicle columnist Kirk Bohls discuss the end of the Texas season and quarterback Arch Manning taking over behind center.
Texas football fans are losing the traditional Orange-White spring game after coach Steve Sarkisian announced its cancellation earlier this month.
However, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte assured the Longhorn faithful during an interview with On Texas Football that there will be a fanfest to replace the game in the spring. Del Conte didn't lay out a specific schedule, but he did talk about a meet and greet with the Texas football team that will coincide with the baseball team's three-game series against Texas A&M.

'I know people are disappointed about a traditional game, but the ultimate goal is to win a championship, and the health and wellness of our student-athletes is most important,' Del Conte said. 'It's unusual, playing a 16-game schedule, but every year, we want to play that 17th game. I applaud Steve for his thinking, I understood it. I understand the disappointment, but you have to look at it in its totality.'
The Longhorns' traditional spring game is usually held in April, but Sarkisian pointed to the wear and tear that his team has gone through as a reason to cancel it. Texas made two College Football Playoff runs the past two seasons, playing 14 games in the 2023-24 season and 16 in 2024-25.
The development of incoming young players who enrolled this winter is another factor in Texas' decision. The Longhorns have sent 25 players to the NFL combine the past two years, leaving plenty of roster spots open for players who have just stepped foot on campus.

Texas Rangers CF Evan Carter leaves with right wrist soreness after spectacular catch
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers center fielder Evan Carter exited Friday night's game against the Chicago White Sox with right wrist soreness, three innings after making a spectacular diving catch. Carter made the highlight grab to take a hit away from Mike Tauchman leading off in the fourth inning. Carter put his right hand down to the ground as he was lunging forward to make the catch with his gloved left hand. When the Rangers took the field in the seventh, Wyatt Langford moved from left field to center, and Sam Haggerty entered the game to play left. The Rangers said only that Carter left the game because of the soreness. Carter had three home runs in his previous four games, reaching base at least three times and with at least one extra-base hit in each of those games. He was 0 for 2 with a walk against the White Sox, and in the only at-bat after that defensive play had a flyout to left. ___ AP MLB:

Texas surging with elite edge Jamarion Carlton after recent visit
Texas surging with elite edge Jamarion Carlton after recent visit Texas has picked a few huge commitments over the last week for their 2026 recruiting class as four-star defensive lineman Dylan Berymon and four-star defensive tackle Corey Wells made their pledges to the Longhorns. They have another blue-chipper in their sights as well and that's four-star edge Jamarion Carlton. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder named Texas in his top five schools last week and also set a July 10 commitment date. Carlton was back in Austin last weekend to see the Longhorns, and he got to take in a bunch of what the program has to offer and what they have in store if he commits. "This official visit was amazing," Carlton told Rivals earlier this week. "Just to be able to chill with the players, get some good advice and then being able to know what plan they have for me. At Texas, the plan to develop me into reaching my highest potential as a player and as a person was great. The time with the players and the coaches was pretty fun." Carlton had a productive junior season for Temple High School. He amassed 57 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, and a forced fumble. Rivals has Carlton ranked extremely high in their rankings. In addition to being the No. 46 overall prospect he's also the No. 4 edge rusher and the No. 4 recruit in the state of Texas. Texas Tech hosted Carlton at the end of April and LSU in May. He still has official visits to Texas A&M and Baylor before he commits, so last weekend was immensely important for Texas and their chances to land Carlton. After spending time with players on the Longhorns roster as well as edge coach LaAllan Clark, Carlton can envision himself playing in Austin. "I can see myself there," Carlton said. If Texas can snag Carlton, they'll inch closer toward a top 10 class for the 2026 cycle. Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love reveals what he loves the most about Matthew Golden
Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love reveals what he loves the most about Matthew Golden Jordan Love gives glowing review of Matthew Golden After being selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, expectations are high for Matthew Golden. The former Longhorn is expected to be a key piece of the Packers passing attack. So far, he has made a good first impression with his new team. In his only season with Texas, Golden was one of the best wide receivers in the SEC. While catching passes from Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning, he added 987 receiving yards and nine touchdowns to his resume. He also averaged 61.7 yards per game. Due to his speed, Golden was hard to stop and saw his stock rise heading into the draft. During his first few months with the Packers, Golden has shown the traits that made him successful with the Longhorns. They have stood out to his new quarterback, Jordan Love, so far in minicamp as he gets more comfortable with his newest weapon. "He's been looking good," Love said. "I think from the get go, from Day 1 when he got here, he's showcased just the versatility he has running routes, the speed he has, and his ability to catch." At the moment, Golden is focused on learning a new offense before the start of the new season. That is something that rookies are doing league-wide. However, Golden seems more comfortable every day, which Love has noticed. "I think for him, every day he's been getting better just understanding what he needs to do," Love added. "You could tell the first couple days there might be a couple routes here and there where he just might be thinking a little bit too much out there, and not just going out there and playing fast, which is expected for some one who just got here and is learning the whole offense." While the regular season is still months away, Golden's play has stood out ahead of what could be a special rookie season.
