Texas football: Even without a spring game, the Longhorns will be kept busy on Saturday

This Saturday figures to be a busy day for the Texas football team. The Longhorns will participate in their final practice of the spring, there's a meet-and-greet with fans that's scheduled for the afternoon, and the program will be keeping tabs on the NFL draft throughout the day to see where its former players land. And then, of course, there's prom. Advertisement Wait, prom? "I've got 22 guys that should still be in high school (and some) have prom this weekend," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian explained after practice on Tuesday. The football part of Saturday's schedule, though, is clearly what is most vital to the Longhorns. As Sarkisian noted, "we've got some moving parts. We just want to make sure that we capitalize on those two hours that we get together." MORE: Arch Manning has some advice to grandson Arch | Golden Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian watches from behind the play during the first quarter of the Longhorns' 2024 Orange-White spring game at Royal-Memorial Stadium. The Longhorns aren't holding an end-of-spring scrimmage this year, but will hold a fan fest on Saturday. What will Saturday look like without a spring game? As has been previously reported, discussed, debated and analyzed, Texas isn't playing its annual Orange-White spring game this year. Sarkisian said last month that he felt it would be easier to develop his team without the spring-ending showcase that's traditionally been played at Royal-Memorial Stadium and has been open to the public. Advertisement So what will things look like on Saturday as Texas wraps up its spring and gets ready for the summer? On Tuesday, Sarkisian outlined his plans: "It'll be a practice with scrimmage portions," he said. "A lot of game-like scenarios, which is what we've been doing at the end of the last couple weeks. We've been doing a lot of 'move the field.' We've been doing a lot of red-area work. We're trying to create situations, but not having them scripted to where they have to play the game. We're putting them in as many game-like situations as we can to see the response." Sarkisian stressed the importance of creating non-scripted situation for his players. He said that during a scrimmage last Thursday, two younger players caught the ball on third-down and fourth-down plays but didn't realize where the first-down marker was. "Those are things that we're trying to teach the game right now," Sarkisian said. "It's not just about running plays, it's how those plays work within the framework of the situation of the game. So we'll do a lot of that work Saturday." Advertisement In addition to Tuesday's workout and what Texas has planned for Saturday, the Longhorns also will practice on Thursday. Sarkisian said that going into this week, "I think everybody in the organization has a thing, two, three, 10 that we can improve upon. If we can really focus in on those things over the next few days all the way through Saturday morning, I think we'll be at a lot better place come June when we come back and start our summer program as we get ready for fall camp." Texas quarterback Arch Manning autographs hats for fans following the Longhorns' season-opening 52-0 win over Colorado State on Aug. 31, 2025. Longhorns will host a fan fest on Saturday While there won't be a scrimmage to watch on Saturday, Texas fans will still get a chance to visit DKR. Texas has announced a "Football Fan Day" that will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through 2 p.m. Starting at 10, Texas will host a street festival outside the stadium that features a Ferris wheel and food trucks. There also will be an on-field experience for kids. Throughout the day, fans will have photo opportunities with Sarkisian, the Golden Hat and Lone Star Showdown trophies, Bevo XV, Hook 'Em and the Texas cheer and pom squads. Advertisement Texas players will sign autographs on the field around noon. All fans in line for autographs will receive a 2025 Texas football poster to be signed. Texas outfielder Jonah Williams had a breakout series last weekend for the Longhorns' baseball team, but the former Galveston Ball star came to Texas as a five-star football signee. The early enrollee has focused primarily on baseball this spring. Sarkisian speaks on Jonah Williams' two-sport plans One Longhorn who fans shouldn't expect to see on Saturday? Freshman safety Jonah Williams. The five-star early enrollee from Galveston Ball also plays baseball and is coming off a breakout weekend against Auburn. Texas and Texas A&M will play at UFCU Disch-Falk Field at 3 p.m. on Saturday, and Williams figures to be playing in left field for Jim Schlossnagle's team. "The guy's out there looking like Juan Soto right now," Sarkisian said. Advertisement Aside from attending some meetings and being an observer at a few football practices, Williams has devoted most of his attention this spring to baseball. This past weekend he told reporters that "(My plan is) stick firm with baseball in the spring and in the fall, it's football time." But is that a realistic long-term plan? Can Williams play both baseball and football for the next two or three years or will he need to eventually pick a sport? "Back in the day, that's what guys used to do a lot. It wasn't as uncommon," Sarkisian said. "I think it's really important that Schloss and I work well together. We've got a great relationship. I did the dual-sport thing there for a couple years and so I respect it. "There'll be that natural transition, however far they go, and then transition him back into football. But guys like Jonah, those elite athlete types, this is all he knows. His whole life, he's been playing multiple sports. He's been doing multiple things. As long as we can create enough balance for him, I think he'll be fine." UPDATE: Texas A&M 2025 spring game date, time, and channel announced

UPDATE: Texas A&M 2025 spring game date, time, and channel announced Due to weather concerns, the starting time of the annual Texas A&M Maroon & White Spring game has been moved up to 12:30 p.m. CT. Texas A&M football's 2025 offseason officially launches later this month. Spring practices begin on March 20 and culminate in the much-anticipated Maroon & White spring game on Saturday, April 19. Over the past two months, recruitment has been the center of attention as head coach Mike Elko and his team have meticulously assembled an exceptional lineup of future prospects for the 2026 class. Amidst the evolving college football landscape, discussions surrounding spring games persist, sparked by Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian's decision to forgo the Orange-White game in favor of an NFL-style offseason training plan. However, for the Aggies, the spring game remains a pivotal moment for growth and live-action reps, especially for redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed, who is slated to take the helm in the 2025 season following last year's bittersweet 1-4 finish after an impressive 7-1 start. While the time change won't affect the outcome, fans who plan to attend the game will now need to plan ahead. Texas A&M 2026 spring game date, time, and channel announced

Texas A&M football's 2025 offseason will officially begin later this month. The spring practice period will begin on March 20 and lead up to the annual Maroon & White spring game on Saturday, April 19. Over the last two months, recruiting has been the primary focus, as coach Mike Elko and his staff have put together an elite list of future visitors in the 2026 recruiting class. Due to the everchanging college football landscape, the debate surrounding spring games moving forward will continue, as Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian started the conversation after opting not to play the Orange-White game next month and will instead adopt an offseason training regime similar to the NFL offseason. For the Aggies, Elko knows that finishing 1-4 after a 7-1 start last season demands his newly constructed roster to take the field for live reps, especially redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed, who will enter the 2025 season as the starter. On Tuesday, an official time and channel were announced for the Maroon & White spring game on April 19. It will air at 2:00 p.m. CT. and be available to stream on SEC Network+. Texas A&M's 2025 spring game date has been revealed

Texas A&M's 2025 spring game date has been revealed Texas A&M's 2025 football season kicks off next month, with the spring season approaching and the annual Maroon & White spring game scheduled for mid-April. According to a team representative who spoke with Austin American Statesman's Tony Catalina, the game is set for 2:00 p.m. CT. on April 19, while the upcoming practice dates have not been announced. Before the official announcement, the future of Texas A&M's spring game was in question due to the new trend in college football regarding the adoption of an NFL O.T.A-like offseason, headed by Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, who announced during his appearance on the "Up and Adams Show" that the annual Orange-White game will not be held this year. This is a personal choice, likely due to the Longhorn's deep run in the College Football Playoff, wanting to prevent any potential injury or added wear and tear before the 2025 season. For the Aggies, this spring season is vital based on how the 2024 campaign ended, while coach Mike Elko and his staff hope the 13 transfer portal additions mesh with the returning roster. The Aggies will also welcome in a majority of the program's 9th-ranked 2025 recruiting class, featuring several players that will see play time as soon as the 2025 season. Texas football to hold fan event in place of spring game, according to Chris Del Conte

Texas football to hold fan event in place of spring game, according to Chris Del Conte Show Caption Hide Caption Why Texas football enters Arch Manning era with lofty expectations Cedric Golden and Houston Chronicle columnist Kirk Bohls discuss the end of the Texas season and quarterback Arch Manning taking over behind center. Texas football fans are losing the traditional Orange-White spring game after coach Steve Sarkisian announced its cancellation earlier this month. However, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte assured the Longhorn faithful during an interview with On Texas Football that there will be a fanfest to replace the game in the spring. Del Conte didn't lay out a specific schedule, but he did talk about a meet and greet with the Texas football team that will coincide with the baseball team's three-game series against Texas A&M. More: Steve Sarkisian contract: 3 things to know about new deal for Texas football coach 'I know people are disappointed about a traditional game, but the ultimate goal is to win a championship, and the health and wellness of our student-athletes is most important,' Del Conte said. 'It's unusual, playing a 16-game schedule, but every year, we want to play that 17th game. I applaud Steve for his thinking, I understood it. I understand the disappointment, but you have to look at it in its totality.' The Longhorns' traditional spring game is usually held in April, but Sarkisian pointed to the wear and tear that his team has gone through as a reason to cancel it. Texas made two College Football Playoff runs the past two seasons, playing 14 games in the 2023-24 season and 16 in 2024-25. The development of incoming young players who enrolled this winter is another factor in Texas' decision. The Longhorns have sent 25 players to the NFL combine the past two years, leaving plenty of roster spots open for players who have just stepped foot on campus.
