Michael Rosen says Allan Ahlberg was a ‘pioneer of great children's literature'
Children's author Rosen, 79, who wrote the book We're Going On A Bear Hunt, wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter: 'Goodbye Allan. You were a pioneer of great children's literature, both in picture books and poetry.
'You were clever, funny and wise. My children loved your books. So did and so DO I.'
Francesca Dow, head of children's literature at Penguin Random House, said: 'Allan was one of the most extraordinary authors I have had the privilege and pleasure to work with.
'His brilliant books – so many of them created with his late wife, Janet, the highly talented illustrator – have been described as 'mini masterpieces'.
'Allan's are some of the very best – true classics, which will be loved by children and families for years to come. Dear Allan, we will all miss you enormously.'
Ahlberg was born in Croydon and raised by his adoptive parents in Oldbury in the Black Country.
In 1975, he published his first children's book with his wife Janet, Here Are The Brick Street Boys.
Together they went on to publish a number of books, including Each Peach Pear Plum (1978), Peepo! (1981), and The Baby's Catalogue (1982), their picture books Funnybones (1980) as well as the books in The Jolly Postman series.

He wrote some books for older readers as well, including the poetry collections Please Mrs Butler (1983) and Heard It In The Playground (1989).
Following his wife's death from breast cancer in 1994, he wrote a tribute to her in the form of Janet's Last Book (1997).
Ahlberg and his wife Janet were among the most loaned authors in the decade leading up to 2010, according to figures from PLR (Public Lending Right).
In 2014, Ahlberg revealed he turned down a literary lifetime achievement award because of the sponsor Amazon's tax arrangements.
The author said it was 'unacceptable' to take the honorary award from reading charity BookTrust when the online firm's name was attached to it.
Ahlberg is survived by his wife Vanessa, daughter Jessica and stepdaughters Saskia and Johanna.

She is the creative genius behind hit BBC comedy Fleabag and the last James Bond blockbuster. And it appears Phoebe Waller-Bridge may be working on a new creation – after being spotted in north London with a folder of notes hidden under her arm. The actress, 40, looking relaxed as she stepped out in denim dungarees in north London, raised hopes that she might be beavering away on a new script. After all, she signed a $100million five-year deal in 2019 with Amazon following a fierce bidding war between Hollywood studios to sign her up once Fleabag's final season had ended. But Ms Waller-Bridge, whose partner is Martin McDonagh, 55, a British-Irish playwright and filmmaker, has so far failed to replicate that early writing success for the streaming giant. The Crashing star's long-awaited Tomb Raider TV series seems to have run into a wall as sources say the idea is 'dead'. Amazon Studios' $100million bet on the British actress doesn't seem to have paid off - yet - with the Fleabag creator's scripts taking a long time to appear and then being judged not ready to shoot. There are no signs of the series being filmed 'in early 2025', which was the promise from a Prime Video executive last year. And Game Of Thrones star Sophie Turner, who was reportedly in negotiations to play Tomb Raider protagonist Lara Croft, is busy with other films for much of this year. That deal has become one of the most notorious flubs in Hollywood - a black mark against Salke which may even have contributed to her demise. Waller-Bridge has taken on two acting roles over the past six years - in Disney's Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny and animated Paramount film 'IF'. She also contributed to the script of 2021 James Bond film No Time To Die. She is, however, due to star in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, an American fantasy film, alongside Barbie actress Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, star of McDonagh's The Banshees Of Inisherin and In Bruges. Ms Waller-Bridge, who was part of the writing team on Bond movie No Time To Die, has been dating Mr McDonagh since 2017. In a Vanity Fair interview two years ago, the actress gave a glimpse into their relationship and how they sometimes swap notes when working on scripts. 'It's really useful being with someone who I think is a genius, it just ups your game,' she said.

It comes after the former Top Gear star, 65, said bovine tuberculosis had been found on his Diddly Squat Farm last week. On Friday, in a post to X, formerly Twitter, he said: "It looks like this year's harvest will be catastrophic. "That should be a worry for anyone who eats food. "If a disaster on this scale had befallen any other industry, there would be a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth." In response to a person in the comments section saying that drama makes good TV, he said: "Yes. But most farms don't have TV shows to keep them going." Asked if the farm would be able to survive without adjacent businesses like Clarkson's pub and shop, he said: "Not a cat in hell's chance." In another response, he said: "Normal weather would help. "It never stopped raining in 2024 and never started in 2025." Last Thursday, he wrote on X that a pregnant cow had contracted bovine TB on his farm near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Cattle which fail a TB test, or animals that have inconclusive results for two consecutive tests, are classed as "reactors", and must be isolated and slaughtered. Asked in the comments of his X post about the prize bull called Endgame, which Clarkson bought recently for £5,500, he said: "His test was 'inconclusive'. "I couldn't bear it if we lost him." Bovine TB is recognised as a problem which devastates farm businesses and is mainly spread through close contact when cattle breathe in droplets of mucus containing Mycobacterium bovis bacteria exhaled from an infectious animal. Badgers can carry the disease and culling has long been a part of the Government response to the crisis, despite criticism from wildlife and animal welfare campaigners, such as Queen guitarist Sir Brian May. The Government said in June it will not be extending the badger cull and retains its commitment to end the practice before the next election. Oxfordshire is an "edge area" for bovine TB, meaning it is a buffer zone between high risk and low risk areas, so most herds are subject to six-monthly TB tests by default. The every-day running of Clarkson's farm is documented in a Prime Video series, which first aired in 2021, and brings to light common problems faced by British farmers. Article continues below Clarkson has become a vocal supporter of farmers and attended a protest in London against the Government's move to introduce inheritance tax on farmland in November 2024.
