Lions cornerback Morice Norris in concussion protocol, team will ease him back in over next two weeks
Detroit cornerback Morice Norris returned to the Lions' facility two days after he was hospitalized in Atlanta after suffering an injury in a preseason game that required him to be taken off the field in an ambulance, the Associated Press reported Sunday. Head coach Dan Campbell provided an update on the cornerback Monday, saying Norris is in the concussion protocol and the team will take it easy with him over the next 10-14 days. Norris posted and reposted encouraging updates on his Instagram account Saturday morning after he suffered a scary injury the previous night that cut short the Lions' preseason road game. He posted a story with the caption, "Amen Amen I'm all good man don't stress it appreciate all the check ins and love." Then he reposted a post from fellow Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold, who included a screenshot of a FaceTime call with a smiling Norris. "My dawg [Morice] called me today," Arnold wrote in his Instagram caption Saturday morning. "Sometimes we forget how precious life is and everything. That goes into playing this game that we love but we serve an almighty... God thanks for protecting my brother." After suffering an apparent head injury early in the fourth quarter of Friday's preseason game in Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Norris was taken off the field in an ambulance. Rather than continuing to play, the Lions and Falcons let the clock run before officials eventually announced the game was suspended with 6:31 remaining. The Lions announced late Friday night Norris was in stable condition with "feeling and movement in all his extremities." Norris, who signed with the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State last year, went down on the first play of the exhibition's fourth quarter. While making a tackle, the second-year corner's head appeared to hit the leg of Falcons running back Nathan Carter. After receiving about 20 minutes of medical staff attention, which concluded with Norris being put on a backboard — with his head and neck braced — he was evacuated to an Atlanta hospital. When the clock started running again, players on the Falcons' offense and Lions' defense gathered in a circle, hand-in-hand with their heads bowed. At the time the game was called, the Lions led, 17-10. But that was on no one's mind. "Something like that happens, it puts things in perspective," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said postgame. Campbell noted he and Falcons head coach Raheem Morris agreed it didn't feel right to finish the game. Norris' social-media activity Saturday morning is a welcome sight, as is the ongoing support he receives around the league and from fans everywhere.

Fantasy Baseball 2-Start Pitcher Rankings: Will Warren, Cade Horton lead list of top streamers for this week
At this time of year, streaming starters in fantasy baseball is the key to victory. In most cases, there aren't enough weeks remaining to make it worth taking a chance on a young starter with loads of potential. Chasing volume is the name of the game, which means that successful managers will grab at least one name off this list before sending him to waivers next week. I've also listed a few hitters who can provide temporary help thanks to a favorable schedule. Two-Start Pitchers (listed in order of preference) Cade Horton, Cubs, 41% (@ TOR, vs. PIT): Horton has found his groove in the majors, tossing 22.2 scoreless innings while allowing just 17 baserunners in his past four starts. Fantasy managers cannot ignore this excellent combination of recent success and substantial upside from someone who was a notable prospect, especially when he is heading into a two-start week that includes a weekend matchup with the lowest-scoring team in baseball. Will Warren, Yankees, 46% (vs. MIN, @ STL): Warren has had a couple of poor starts this summer but deserves credit for allowing two or fewer runs in seven of his past nine starts. His premium strikeout skills (10.4 K/9 rate) make him especially appealing in points leagues, but he is worth the risk in roto formats as well. It helps that he will face a depleted Twins squad and a mediocre Cardinals offense. Chris Paddack, Tigers, 25% (@ CWS, @ MIN): Paddack has had one good start and one bad start for the Tigers, which mostly corresponds to his inconsistent pattern during his tenure with the Twins. I'll admit that the 29-year-old is a risky option, but he also has plenty of upside for a two-start week with favorable matchups. For those who are chasing wins, Paddack is a risk worth taking. Bailey Falter, Royals, 12% (vs. WSH, vs. CWS): Falter did not fare well in his initial start with the Royals but still deserves credit for posting solid results (3.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) in 22 starts with the Pirates. His appeal is similar to that of Paddack, as he will make two home starts against teams who sit last in their respective divisions. He has an excellent chance to pick up a win, which is fantasy gold at this time of year. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] José Soriano, Angels, 36% (vs. LAD, @ ATH): There is an easy way to decide on Soriano in roto leagues this week — how much do you care about your WHIP? The righty induces so many grounders that he should log a respectable ERA. And the ability to keep the ball on the ground makes him a good fit at the Athletics' hitter-friendly park. But plenty of those grounders sneak through the infield, which means that Soriano's 1.40 WHIP is likely here to stay. Cade Cavalli, Nationals, 14% (@KC, vs. PHI): It has been a long road back to the majors for Cavalli, who threw 4.1 scoreless innings in his first start since 2022. The 26-year-old is still regarded as a solid prospect, and has a favorable matchup this week against a Royals offense that ranks 29th in runs scored. I can see the case for chasing Cavalli's upside over adding some of the boring veterans on this list. Yu Darvish, Padres, 40% (@SF, @LAD): Darvish has been inconsistent since returning from the injured list on July 7. He seemed to turn a corner when he tossed seven scoreless innings on July 30, but took a step back when he allowed three runs over four frames in Arizona last time out. He is backed by a solid lineup and dominant bullpen, but his matchups this week are fairly difficult. He is best left for those in 15-team leagues. Miles Mikolas, Cardinals, 9% (vs. COL, vs. NYY): Adding Mikolas would be the ultimate case of chasing a win in deep leagues. The veteran is not an effective starter, as is evidenced by his 5.11 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. But he could pick up a victory against the 30-87 Rockies at the outset of the week. Dean Kremer, Orioles, 22% (vs. SEA, @HOU): Kremer enjoyed an effective stretch during late June and most of July before taking a step backward by allowing 12 runs over 17 innings in his past three starts. The right-hander has little upside for a two-start week that includes matchups with a pair of potential postseason teams, which means that his value is mostly limited to roto managers who could use 8-10 strikeouts. Gurriel has become the team's cleanup hitter, which makes him the top option to add, in hopes that he will often drive in the likes of Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte. In deeper leagues, Tyler Locklear (5%) and Alek Thomas (1%) are solid streamers as well. Mickey Moniak, Rockies, 18%: The Rockies are another team with seven games this week, and their hitters will enjoy playing four of them at home. They could also fare well at the start of the week against a Cardinals staff that lacks elite arms. Five of the contests will come against righties, which makes the lefty-hitting Moniak a great option. Jordan Beck (37%), Tyler Freeman (8%) and Warming Bernabel (29%) are good options as well. Colt Keith, Tigers, 18%: The Tigers will face seven unimposing right-handed starters this week. The lefty-hitting Keith should bat leadoff in all seven games, which could lead to plenty of hits and runs scored.

Cleveland has cut AL Central deficit from 15 1/2 games to 6. The record divisional comeback is 14
It's been a tough few weeks for the Cleveland Guardians — except on the field. Star closer Emmanuel Clase joined teammate Luis Ortiz in being placed on leave as part of an investigation into sports betting. Then the front office traded away former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber as he neared a return from Tommy John surgery — not exactly the type of move a team makes when it fancies itself a contender. And yet, the Guardians have won nine of their last 11, even after a loss Sunday to the Chicago White Sox. They are a half-game behind the New York Yankees for the final wild card in the American League. After losing to Detroit on July 6 — just over a month ago — the Guardians had dropped 10 in a row and trailed the AL Central-leading Tigers by 15 1/2 games. That lead is now six. If Cleveland actually catches Detroit and wins the division, it would be the biggest comeback in the divisional play era. Here are the largest comebacks to date, according to Sportradar. 1978 New York Yankees (14 games): New York won the AL East thanks to Bucky Dent's homer in a one-game playoff at Fenway Park, and although this was a painful episode in Red Sox history, the Yankees won this more than Boston lost it. New York went 30-9 to finish the regular season. After stumbling in early September, the Red Sox later won eight in a row to force the playoff. 1995 Seattle Mariners (13 games): After a win on Aug. 2, the California Angels led Seattle by 13 in the AL West and Texas by 11. Then the Angels went 22-34 the rest of the way while the Mariners were 36-20. When the teams met in a one-game playoff, it was a 9-1 blowout in Seattle's favor, and although wild cards were in the playoffs for the first time, California couldn't even salvage one of those. 2012 Oakland Athletics (13 games): Fresh off two straight pennants, the Texas Rangers led the Angels by 6 1/2 and the A's by 13 at the end of June. But Oakland went 33-13 down the stretch, forcing the Rangers to settle for a wild card. 1973 New York Mets (12 1/2 games): Tug McGraw's famous phrase — 'Ya gotta believe!' — was a rallying cry of this comeback. New York was 12 1/2 back in early July and still in last place in late August, but the Mets took a weak NL East with an 82-79 record and then beat Cincinnati to win the pennant. 2006 Minnesota Twins (12 1/2 games): Detroit was 35-14 and led the Twins by over a dozen games, but there was enough time left for Minnesota to edge the Tigers in the AL Central when Detroit dropped five in a row to end the regular season. Although there are similarities between 2006 and this year, the good news for the Tigers is that they did make the World Series that season as a wild card. Trivia time Which team did the Red Sox a momentary favor by routing the Yankees 9-2 to help force that playoff game in 1978? Line of the week Shea Langeliers had five hits — including three solo homers — for the Athletics a 16-7 win over Washington on Tuesday night. Langeliers became the fourth catcher with two three-homer games, joining Johnny Bench, Gary Carter and Travis d'Arnaud. Comeback of the week The New York Mets led Milwaukee 5-0 in the fourth inning Sunday, but nobody who has watched those two teams recently should have been shocked when the Brewers chipped away and eventually won 7-6 on a solo homer by Isaac Collins in the bottom of the ninth. Milwaukee, which had a win probability of 7.1% in the fourth according to Baseball Savant, has won nine in a row to take a five-game lead over the Phillies and Blue Jays for baseball's best record. The Mets, on the other hand, have dropped seven straight and lead Cincinnati by only 1 1/2 games for the National League's final wild card. Trivia answer Cleveland, which won just 69 games that season.
