AI Does 50% Work At Salesforce, But Mass Layoffs Not On Cards Yet: CEO Marc Benioff
On The Circuit With Emily Chang podcast for Bloomberg, he spoke at length about the transformative power of AI, but added it can either replace humans or enhance them, and he believes in the latter. AI will support and improve human work, instead of taking it away or replacing people completely, he added.
With the advancement of AI in the tech industry, Mr Benioff said that some jobs will disappear but new ones will also be created. He explained that Salesforce has already undergone major changes, such as thousands of employees in his company being given new roles and there being a pause on hiring engineering jobs for now.
According to Fortune, in the first quarter, the San Francisco-based software company has redeployed more than 50 percent of the people already working with them, he said.
His company has created an AI tool that can do tasks like customer service without human supervision with 93 percent accuracy, Mr Benioff said.
Humans have led to the formation of some of the greatest innovations and also created several businesses that seek to solve real-world problems, he said. They possess a "superpower" that AI lacks, which is the capacity to show empathy or establish genuine connections with others, Mr Benioff added, reported Fortune.
"All of us have to get our heads around this idea that AI can do things that we were doing, he added, stating, "We can move on to do higher-value work."
Apple iPod founder Tony Fadell also stressed the importance of being hands-on with the tools, instead of just learning about them in theory. He said that companies nowadays are not hiring freshers like they used to but are looking for those who already have experience.
He said that junior-level jobs, like entry-level or fresher jobs, in all industries are at high risk as businesses are no longer willing to spend time training freshers or interns.
Last month, Mr Benioff said that AI does up to 50 percent of all work at Salesforce, including critical tasks like customer service, development, and engineering.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated in May that 20 percent to 30 percent of the company's code was generated by Artificial Intelligence.
In April, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said more than 30 percent of his company's coding work was done by Artificial Intelligence.
In May, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that within the next 12 to 18 months, AI will soon be doing most of the coding work for his company's Llama Project. Currently, AI can help in auto-completing a section of code and soon will become even better than the top coders, he added.

‘We're AI,' popular indie rock band admits
An indie rock band with more than a million monthly listeners on Spotify has owned up to being an AI-generated music project following days of speculation about whether the group was real. Named Velvet Sundown, seemingly a nod to Lou Reed's band The Velvet Underground, the digital group has become a viral hit, generating ferocious online discussion after racking up hundreds of thousands of listens. An updated Spotify profile, consulted on Tuesday by AFP, admitted that the group was an 'ongoing artistic provocation'. 'All characters, stories, music, voices and lyrics are original creations generated with the assistance of artificial intelligence tools employed as creative instruments,' Velvet Sundown's profile added. Recently created social media profiles, featuring photos of the group that look suspiciously fake, have teased readers about the group's origins, offering often contradictory information. Experts have long warned about the dangers of AI-image, video and music generators blurring the lines between the real and fake. A major study in December by the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), which represents more than five million creators worldwide, warned about the danger of AI-generated music. It forecast that artists could see their incomes shrink by more than 20 percent in the next four years as the market for AI-composed music grows. Stockholm-based streamer Spotify declined to comment directly about Velvet Sundown when contacted by AFP. Spokeswoman Geraldine Igou wrote that the platform does not 'prioritise or benefit financially from music created using AI tools'. 'All tracks are created, owned, and uploaded by licensed third parties,' Igou insisted. Rival music streaming service Deezer displayed a warning for 'AI-generated content' for Velvet Sundown. 'Some tracks on this album may have been created using artificial intelligence,' it said. The Spotify rival has an AI-music detection tool that is able to identify songs generated using popular software models such as Suno and Udio. Deezer said in April that it was receiving more than 20,000 fully AI-generated tracks on a daily basis, comprising 18 percent of all uploaded content, an increase from the previously reported 10 percent in January. Reports on Tuesday said an imposter posing as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been using AI-generated voice and text messages to high-level officials and foreign ministers.

Abu Dhabi-Hyderabad Etihad Boeing 787: No issue with fuel control switches, return flight was precautionary; inspection followed Air India crash preliminary report
Following the Air India crash preliminary report, Etihad Airways inspected a Boeing 787's fuel control switch locking mechanism after a flight returned to Abu Dhabi as a precaution. The focus is on preventing inadvertent fuel supply cutoff. MUMBAI: An Etihad Airways Boeing 787 returned to Abu Dhabi shortly after take-off for Hyderabad on Sunday, following which the airline carried out an inspection of the aircraft's fuel control switch locking mechanism as part of an engineering work order. On Thursday, the airline said the pilots decision to return was a precautionary measure. The locking mechanism of fuel control switches on Boeing aircraft is under global scrutiny after it was mentioned in the preliminary report on the June 12 Air India AI-171 Boeing 787 accident which killed 270 people. On Monday, in a statement to the Times of India on a query about the said engineering work order, the airline said: "Etihad always ensures its maintenance is fully compliant." 'Etihad has not experienced any issues with fuel control switches. The return of flight EY352 on 13 July was a precautionary measure and not related to the aircraft's fuel system," the airline said. The said aircraft (A6-BLI) took off and climbed to about 9500 feet when the pilots diverted it back to Abu Dhabi. TOI had reported that since the aircraft operated a flight on Monday, it is unlikely that a problem was detected in the locking mechanism. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released the preliminary report into AI 171 accident on Saturday, July 12. The Etihad engineering work order came a day later, on July 13. TOI had accessed the said document, it instructs engineers to inspect whether the locking mechanism on the fuel control supply switches in the said Boeing 787 aircraft can be moved without lifting. Why is this particular locking feature on Boeing aircraft in focus now? The AAIB report said that fuel control switches on Air India B787 transitioned from ``Run'' to ''Cutoff'' three seconds after the aircraft lifted off from Ahmedabad runway. 'In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cut off (the fuel supply). The other pilot responded that he did not do so", the report said. Fuel control switches have a locking mechanism to prevent inadvertent movement from 'Run', which starts and continues the fuel supply to 'Cutoff' which discontinues the fuel supply or vice-versa. The switch has to be lifted and then moved forward where it drops into a slot and this starts the fuel supply. Similarly, to cut the fuel supply the switch has to be lifted and pulled back into a slot. But a faulty lock can be moved without lifting and so can inadvertently move during different stages of flight, such as a take-off for instance. The AAIB report referred to a 2018 safety bulletin issued by the US aviation regulator which instructed airlines to inspect for locking system failure in the fuel control switches of Boeing aircraft, including Boeing 787. A faulty locking system could cut off fuel supply to the engines without pilots input. The AAIB report said that Air India did not carry out the inspection as it was not mandated by the FAA. The Etihad engineering work order follows the 2018 directive issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). 'If the switch cannot be moved without lifting, the locking feature is functional. No further action is needed. If the switch can be moved freely without lifting, the locking feature has failed or is disengaged. Replace the Thrust Control Module (TCM)', said the Etihad work order.

OpenAI lists Google as cloud partner amid growing demand for computing capacity
OpenAI has included Alphabet's Google Cloud among its suppliers to meet escalating demands for computing capacity, according to an updated list published on the ChatGPT maker's website. The artificial-intelligence giant also relies on services from Microsoft, Oracle, and CoreWeave. The deal with Google, finalized in May after months of discussions, was first reported by Reuters citing a source in June. The arrangement underscores how massive computing demands to train and deploy AI models are reshaping the competitive dynamics in AI, and marks OpenAI's latest move to diversify its compute sources beyond its major supporter Microsoft, including its high-profile Stargate data center project. Earlier this year, OpenAI partnered with SoftBank and Oracle on the $500 billion Stargate infrastructure program and signed multi-billion-dollar agreements with CoreWeave to bolster computing capacity. The partnership with Google is the latest of several maneuvers made by OpenAI to reduce its dependency on Microsoft whose Azure cloud service had served as the ChatGPT maker's exclusive data center infrastructure provider until January. Google and OpenAI discussed an arrangement for months but were previously blocked from signing a deal due to OpenAI's lock-in with Microsoft, a source had told Reuters.
