‘Smoke alarms save lives': occupants evacuate after Muskoka house fire

Fire crews in Muskoka responded to a fire that caused 'significant' damage to a home in the Bracebridge area Sunday morning.
According to Kevin Plested, Bracebridge's fire chief, Stations 1 and 2 were dispatched to reports of a house on fire at around 9:30 a.m. near Wellington Street and Santa's Village Road.
Six apparatuses and approximately 30 firefighters were involved in the response.
Plested told CTV News that the two occupants heard their smoke alarms activate and evacuated safely. One of them reportedly suffered a minor ankle injury.
'Residents are reminded that working smoke alarms save lives,' said Plested, in an email to CTV News. 'In this case, the owner of the property was diligent in ensuring they had working smoke alarms installed on all levels of the home.'
Plested adds that the home suffered significant damage, but it is believed to be insured.
The fire is not believed to be suspicious. An investigator remained on site after the incident.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Bellevue Avenue and Denison Square shortly before 5 a.m. and found the victim, a man in his 40s, suffering from serious injuries. He was rushed to hospital via emergency run. Police say the suspect, a 38-year-old man, fled the scene but has since been arrested. 'This stabbing was unprovoked but targeted,' said Insp. Todd Jocko. 'The suspect has been arrested and he will be charged accordingly.' A large police presence remains in the area, as the investigation continues. 'It's very early in this investigation, so there's not a lot of information that I can share,' Jocko added. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators.

(Ontario Provincial Police/Facebook) A Cochrane resident is facing several charges after being stopped by police twice within 24 hours last weekend, the Ontario Provincial Police reported Sunday. Initial stop The first incident occurred on the morning of Sunday, July 27, when officers pulled over a pickup truck on Sixth Avenue in Cochrane. A roadside breath test using a breathalyzer revealed the driver had a warn-range blood alcohol concentration, resulting in an immediate three-day licence suspension. More violations Monday The following morning, at about 6:45 a.m., police stopped a motorcycle on Third Avenue after observing it speeding and producing excessive noise. Police confirmed the rider was the same individual from the previous day's stop. Penalties and charges As a result, the 26-year-old motorist was charged with driving while under suspension, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, careless driving, driving without plates, driving a motorcycle without a proper rear light, failing to surrender a vehicle permit and producing unnecessary noise. Additionally, the motorcycle was impounded for seven days at the owner's expense. The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 2. In a social media post related to the incident, OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer urged motorists to 'Drive safe.'

Officers responded to reports of a person being stabbed around 5 a.m. near Bellevue Avenue and Denison Square, Toronto police said in a post on X. When police arrived, they found a man in his 40s "serious stab wounds," the post read. He was taken to hospital in critical condition. Wales Avenue is closed near Augusta Avenue Sunday morning, police said. Bellevue Square Park also remained closed to the public as of 1 p.m. Sunday.
