Top Philippine Bank Likely to Sustain Record Profit, CEO Says
'It's not ideal, it's not what we want but we can live with it,' Chief Executive Officer Nestor Tan said on US tariffs in an interview with Bloomberg Television's Haslinda Amin on Tuesday. 'I don't think the banking sector will be affected that much. Of course there may be a slowdown.'
Washington began imposing this month a 19% tariff on Philippine goods, on par with most of its neighbors.
BDO, owned by the family of late billionaire Henry Sy, reported a net income of 40.6 billion pesos ($710 million) in the first half of the year, up 3% from a year ago. Profit rose 12% to a record 82 billion pesos for all of 2024.
Shares of BDO, among the heavyweights in the benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index, edged higher after falling as much as 2.1% earlier Tuesday. The stock has dropped 1.4% this year.
Tan said a stable geopolitical situation and macroeconomic indicators will be key for the Philippines to attract investors. He expects BDO's revenues to grow by low double-digit levels this year.
'There are two things that we're looking at. Number one is stability and we're seeing that slowly happening. Second is probably a more benign interest rate environment,' the bank executive said. He expects the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to further cut its key interest rates twice for the rest of the year.
'It impacts our margin negatively because the yields are expected to go down a few basis points,' Tan said. 'But we're hoping that with lower interest rates, capital expenditure lending will start to pick up, and that we hope the volume will offset for the margin compression.'
The bank last month raised 115 billion pesos from a 1.5-year bond, the Southeast Asian nation's largest corporate bond sale. Tan said it's part of the bank's funding mix 'and when we expect rates to go down, we try to keep our liability short.' He sees the bank returning to the bond market next year.
The government is targeting lower economic growth of 5.5% to 6.5% this year compared with a previous goal of as much as 8%. BSP Governor Eli Remolona has said the monetary authority has room to continue its easing cycle next year after possibly two more quarter-point cuts for the rest of 2025.

Acer ramps up Puducherry contract manufacturing capacity
Chennai: IT hardware manufacturer Acer is ramping up its contract manufacturing footprint both in Puducherry as well as neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The company, which uses Puducherry based Plumage to make a range of computers, notebooks and other products, is looking to expand production capacity with Plumage as well as start a similar contract manufacturing set up near Chennai. Speaking to TOI, Acer India president & MD, Harish Kohli said, "Plumage are in very serious dialogue with Puducherry government asking for about 15 to 20 acre where they want to build a much larger setup. What they have done now is a single line on which the manufacturing will happen and in this they can make per shift 500 laptops a day which effectively means close to 2 lakh units in a year." Acer, which has had a manufacturing/assembly set up in Puducherry since in the late 1990s, is also all set to establish contract manufacturing footprint in Tamil Nadu as well. "In the next six to eight weeks another vendor like Plumage with whom we do some work already are going to expand into the notebook business for us and their location is going to be in Tamil Nadu near Chennai," said Kohli. Plumage's older Puducherry plant currently makes all-in-one computers for Acer. "They also do for us the Intellectual Flat Panels as well as make products for our 100% subsidiary Altos India which sells server and workstation class machines," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Godrej Riverine - Exclusive Payment Plan 30:40:30 Godrej Properties Get Quote Undo You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai | Gold Rates Today in Chennai | Silver Rates Today in Chennai With Acer currently conceptualising and making products made for India, in India, it is also exploring export opportunities in the South East Asian region in markets like the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. Ukraine claims attack on key hub for Russian oil pipelines
Ukraine claimed a strike on an important hub for Russia's network of crude-exporting pipelines, though flows from the system to Europe seem to remain uninterrupted for now. A worker stands at the oil tank terminal of the state-run company MERO, which transports crude oil and protects the strategic crude oil reserves of the Czech Republic, on June 17, 2025 in Nelahozeves, near Kralupy nad Vltavou. The Czech Republic has phased out Russian oil in a painstaking process taking much longer than the three years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, its mastermind Jaroslav Pantucek, CEO and board chairman of Mero said. (Photo by Michal Cizek / AFP)(AFP) The attack on an oil-pumping station in Unecha caused damage and a large-scale fire in the area of the facility in Russia's Bryansk region, near the border with Ukraine and Belarus, the General Staff in Kyiv said in a Facebook post. Explosions were heard in the storage area and where the main and support pumps are located, according to the statement. It wasn't possible to independently verify Ukraine's claims on the Unecha strike. Russian oil-pipeline operator Transneft PJSC didn't immediately respond to a Bloomberg request for comment. The strike is the latest in a flurry of intensified drone attacks on Russian oil and gas infrastructure this month, ahead of a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Friday. Earlier this month Ukraine hit four Russian refineries, with operations at three plants owned by oil giant Rosneft PJSC being disrupted. On Tuesday, Ukraine said it attacked a key helium plant in Russia. The Unecha station is a key facility of the Druzhba pipeline network, through which Russia sends its crude to Hungary and Slovakia, and transits Kazakh oil to Germany. The station is also part of the Baltic Pipeline System-2, a link that takes Russian crude to the port of Ust-Luga, the country's second-largest oil-export facility on the Baltic Sea. 'Crude oil deliveries are on schedule,' Hungarian refiner Mol Nyrt. told Bloomberg on Wednesday, while the country's foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, condemned the attack in a Facebook statement. Slovak pipeline operator Transpetrol said that so far there's no record of any request 'to change the approved current monthly schedule' for crude flows via the Druzhba link. The flows of Kazakh oil through the Transneft system is being carried out as normal, without restrictions on the acceptance of oil from shippers, the country's energy ministry said by email. The Bryansk region's governor, Alexander Bogomaz, said in a Telegram post that a fire broke out at a fuel infrastructure facility in the Unecha district as a result of Ukrainian rockets and drones attack. The fire has been put out, he added, without providing further details on potential damage.
