CM to unveil several projects
Gandhinagar: As the nationwide 'Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam' campaign completed a year on June 5, the state govt said it planted 17.48 crore saplings and secured the second position in the country.
Kutch district led by planting 2.95 lakh saplings over the past year, the govt said.
Chief minister Bhupendra Patel will preside over the state-level environment day function at Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre on Thursday to mark
World Environment Day
. He will unveil several projects of the environment and forests department at the event, a govt statement said on Wednesday.
An official statement mentioned that 1.76 crore saplings were planted in rural areas of the state, while 15.72 crore saplings were planted in urban areas over the past year.
The statement also noted that in Gujarat, 5,500 villages established 'Matruvan' as part of the 75th Van Mahotsav in 2024. Additionally, under the 'Van Kavach' scheme, 10,000 saplings were planted using the Miyawaki method, preparing 122 Van Kavach over 200 hectares in 2024-25.
On Thursday, the chief minister will launch a dashboard for plastic waste management, update the GCZMA website, virtually inaugurate the new building of GPCB's Bharuch regional office, the air laboratory of GPCB's Morbi regional office, and the newly constructed CETP in Halol.

KDMC began the campaign by planting 3,000 trees at the Ecological Park in Umbarde. This initiative was led by KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel. KDMC has pledged to plant over one lakh trees in Kalyan-Dombivli in the coming days. In addition to the 3,000 trees at the Ecological Park, the plantation of 8,000 trees near the NRC Company at Ambivli was also initiated by KDMC with assistance from NGOs on Thursday. At the time, Commissioner Goel said, "Citizens should also take the initiative and cooperate to save the environment, reduce pollution, conserve water, and segregate waste." KDMC also launched the Miyawaki method of tree planting at the solid waste project in Umbarde. Commissioner Goel stated that similar Miyawaki forests will be created at six other locations within the municipal limits. KDMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Jadhav said, "The Miyawaki forest will be created at Barave, Khadegolivali, Tisgaon, and Dombivli." Commissioner Goel mentioned that around 50 social welfare organisations from across the city have been enrolled in the drive, including various local groups. Additionally, KDMC plans to involve school and college students once schools reopen, to further the goal of developing the city into a green city. No official version of Bharat Mata portrait, so cannot be allowed in govt events: Kerala government
The Left government in Kerala on Friday made it clear that it was not in agreement with the use of the Bharat Mata portrait at the Environment Day event at the Raj Bhavan here as the picture was not authorised as the official version by the Constitution or the Indian government. Kerala Agriculture Minister P Prasad , who boycotted the event at the Raj Bhavan a day ago over the use of the portrait, said that those in constitutional offices cannot convert government programmes into political events . Prasad, while talking to a TV channel, said that no Bharat Mata portrait has ever been acknowledged as the official or authorised version by the Constitution or any of the governments in power since independence. Live Events He further said that the portrait about to be used at the event was not carrying the Indian flag, but that of a political organisation, and therefore, it could not be honoured during a government event. The minister said that the particular political organisation and the Governor were free to pay homage to the portrait at private events, but it cannot be done in state government programmes. "We all have a political view, but those in constitutional positions have restrictions on how they express it," he added. He said that the government view was that such a stand ought not to have been taken by a constitutional establishment and expressed hope that it will be corrected by the concerned persons. On eve of the programme, a new schedule was sent to us and it included the paying of floral tribute to Bharat Mata portrait. "So, I enquired with the Raj Bhavan about the floral tributes and asked them to send me a picture of the portrait. The portrait was the one used by the RSS and was not recognised or authorised as an official version, I informed the Raj Bhavan that we cannot offer floral tributes to it," he said. The minister said that the Raj Bhavan in response said they cannot remove the portrait. On being told that the opposition was criticising the lack of response on the issue by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Prasad said that the Congress-led UDF was trying to gain political mileage out of it especially in view of the upcoming bypoll in Nilambur assembly constituency. After knowing Raj Bhavan's stand, the state government relocated the event to the Secretariat's Durbar Hall and the Raj Bhavan went ahead with its programme. Later, in a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan, the Governor said, "Whatever be the pressure, from whichever quarters, there will be no compromise whatsoever on Bharat Mata." In his speech at the Raj Bhavan programme, the Governor said two ministers--state Education Minister and Agriculture Minister--had agreed to attend the function but they did not turn up for the event. While Sangh outfit Bharatiya Vichara Kendram strongly backed the Governor, the ruling CPI(M) and the Congress criticised the Raj Bhavan on the matter.

Telangana committed to environmental restoration: Forests minister Surekha
HYDERABAD: Stating that the responsibility to protect nature lies with everyone, Environment & Forests Minister Konda Surekha on Thursday emphasised that both government and public should work in unison to tackle the growing plastic crisis. Speaking at an event organised by Telangana Pollution Control Board (TGPCB) to celebrate World Environment Day under theme 'Ending Plastic Pollution-Globally' at TGPCB's Sanathnagar office, the minister underscored the importance of eliminating single-use plastics (SUPs) and advocated the promotion of sustainable alternatives such as jute bags, paper products, cotton bags, stainless steel, and bamboo. She also encouraged the use of public transport, solar energy and effective solid waste management as key sustainable practices. 'Plastic pollution is not just a local issue. It's an international threat to biodiversity, public health, food security and our future. Plastic does not degrade easily and it pollutes our land, rivers, and oceans for hundreds of years, threatening all life forms,' she added.
