Govt to rebuild homes for Petagas and Bukit Vor fire victims
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor visited the affected families at the temporary relief centre at Sri Putatan Hall on Wednesday (June 18).
He said the state is committed to helping the victims recover and rebuild their lives.
'We understand the hardship these families are facing, having lost everything to the fires. The state government will help rebuild their houses so they can start anew,' he said.
The fires, which occurred on June 16 and 17, left 74 people from 28 families homeless, including 20 families (46 individuals) in Kampung Petagas, and eight families (28 individuals) in Bukit Vor.
Hajiji added that to ease the burden of the victims, each head of household has received various forms of assistance, including RM1,000 in Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI), RM1,000 from the Sabah Welfare Foundation (YKS), and RM1,000 from the Sabah Zakat Centre under the Islamic Religious Council (MUIS).
Fire victims also received food baskets and RM300 from Perbadanan Baitulmal Negeri Sabah.
'For houses that were completely destroyed, the government will rebuild them on the existing sites through Rumah Mesra SMJ.
'For partially damaged houses, the government will assist with cash aid between RM5,000 and RM10,000, depending on the extent of damage,' he said.
Hajiji stated that the state government remains deeply concerned about the people's welfare and will continue to ensure that no one is left behind during difficult times.
'As a caring government, we are committed to looking after the welfare of the people, especially during times of hardship,' he said.
Also present at the event were Deputy Chief Minister and State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, and State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong.
Petagas assemblyman Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Awang Sahari, Secretary for Home Affairs and Research Datuk Awang Shahminan Sahari, and Putatan district officer Masawi Salleh were also present.

New home brings relief to OKU couple in Kiulu

KIULU (July 18): A couple with disabilities from Kampung Tinompok Pukak can now live more independently after receiving a new home under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Housing Programme. Hendary @ Hendary Felik Lapik, 51, who is non-verbal and wears a prosthetic leg, received the key to his new house from Kiulu assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai in a small handover ceremony today. Perched beside a paddy field, near the river and just off the roadside, Hendary's new home sits on family-owned land, offering both accessibility and a peaceful environment. He lives with his wife, who also has a speech disability, and their two daughters, aged two and five. Prior to receiving the house, Hendary and his family lived in a household shared with his extended family. According to his brother, Bonnyface Bin Felik Lapik, who is also the Village Development and Security Committee chairman of Kampung Bolotikon, the home marks a new phase of independent living for the couple and their children. 'This gives them the space to live on their own, while still being close enough for family to visit and assist when needed. 'It will help them manage better as a family and give the children more room to grow,' he said, adding that the family helped facilitate the application for the SMJ house. Hendary supports his household through various types of small-scale work in the village. In a brief exchange during the handover, Hendary expressed his gratitude through gestures, thanking the assemblyman and government for the assistance. He also invited several friends with similar disabilities to be present, wanting to share the moment with them. Joniston said the SMJ housing programme is part of the state government's ongoing commitment to improve the living conditions of rural residents, especially those with low income and physical challenges. 'We want to make sure that people with different needs, including those with disabilities, are not left behind. A home like this can have a big impact on daily life.
