Asking both Chouhan and Tankha to amicably settle the defamation case, a two-judge bench of the top court led by Justice M M Sundresh and Justice Rajesh Bindal, said, "Please do not make us hear this case. Let us close it. Both of you sit together and settle this."
During the course of a brief hearing, the apex court asked the senior lawyers Mahesh Jethmalani and Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chouhan and Tankha to sit together and settle the defamation case.
Congress leader Tankha in his defamation complaint has alleged that Chouhan, BJP state president V D Sharma and former minister Bhupendra Singh carried out a "coordinated, malicious, false and defamatory" campaign against him for political mileage by accusing him of opposing OBC reservation in the 2021 panchayat elections in Madhya Pradesh.
The allegations were vehemently rejected by Chouhan and others.
The Supreme Court had in March this year extended its November 11, 2024 interim order of granting exemption to Union Agriculture minister, Chouhan from personal appearance before a Madhya Pradesh trial court in connection with the criminal defamation case lodged against him and two other BJP leaders of Madhya Pradesh, by Tankha.
Earlier on November 11, while granting relief to Chouhan and two other BJP leaders of Madhya Pradesh -- state president V D Sharma and former minister Bhupendra Singh -- the apex court in its order had stayed the execution of bailable warrants against them in the defamation case filed by Tankha.
The apex court was hearing the appeal filed by Chouhan against the October 25 order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court refusing to quash the defamation case against him.
Tankha, in his complaint in the trial court, had said there were defamatory statements made against him in the run-up to Panchayat elections in the state in 2021.
On January 20, 2024, a special court in Jabalpur decided to examine the plea filed by Tankha against the three BJP leaders under Section 500 (Punishment for defamation) of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) and summoned them.

To regularise illegal houses, Goa govt plans bill to bypass comunidade
Panaji: State govt is likely to introduce two different bills in the monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly, scheduled to be held from July 22, to regularise illegal structures on comunidade land and govt land. The govt, through the bill, will empower the administrator of the comunidade to decide on the application — bypassing the comunidade — to regularise the illegal structures on the respective comunidade, not exceeding an area of 300sqm. Initially, govt wanted to issue an ordinance, but as the assembly was being summoned, state govt decided to introduce bills in the monsoon session. In 2012, BJP govt tried to consider regularising illegal houses that were built up to the year 2000 on comunidade properties in Goa, but it did not see the light of day as no comunidade gave any no-objection certificates (NOCs) to applicants. State govt has started discussions, and already three meetings have been held to finalise how illegal houses and encroachments can be legalised on govt and comunidade land. 'We held three meetings. Govt will bring two bills to legalise illegal houses and encroachments on govt and comunidade land. There will be a few more meetings to finalise the bills,' a senior govt official said. Collectors will decide on applications and collect the market price amount for the land from the applicant. Once the money is paid, govt will issue a sanad. 'On comunidade land, the deputy collector will issue an order, collect the amount, and issue the sanad. The comunidade will not have any role to play, but the money will be deposited in the respective comunidade once the land has been regularised,' a senior officer said, noting that this is still under discussion. While some ministers are pushing to finalise as soon as possible, there is opposition from other ministers in the cabinet as it will encourage illegalities in the state. 'The govt wants to have a cut-off date of 2025, which means all the illegalities will be legalised in the state,' the senior official said. In his budget speech, chief minister Pramod Sawant decided to regularise illegal structures up to 1,000sqm in urban areas and 600sqm in rural areas by amending the Goa Regularisation of Unauthorised Construction Act, 2016. In 2012, BJP govt tried to consider regularising illegal houses that were built up to the year 2000 on comunidade properties in Goa, but it did not see the light of day. Similarly, in 2001, BJP attempted to regularise the illegal houses. The govt even issued a notification in 2001, but the effort was in vain because govt did not take comunidades into confidence. In 2001, govt said that the comunidade had to give a NOC to legalise illegal structures on comunidade land, but not a single comunidade gave an NOC to encroachers.

BJP to highlight Ambedkar 'insult' by RJD's Lalu Prasad

Thousands brave rain to pay last respects to Vijay Rupani
Rajkot: There was an outpouring of grief as people of Rajkot turned out in large numbers despite the pouring rain to bid adieu to Vijay Rupani on Monday. The mortal remains of the former chief minister, who was onboard the ill-fated London-bound flight AI 171, were flown from Ahmedabad to Rajkot for people to pay their last respects. Thousands attended his final procession and cremation. Earlier in the day, Chief minister Bhupendra Patel and other ministers of the state govt were present at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to pay their respects to the 68-year-old departed leader when his remains were handed over with state honours to his wife Anjali, and children, Rushabh and Radhika, who broke down as they received the coffin. People lined the route from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to the city airport and showered petals on the ambulance carrying Rupani's remains. The body was then flown by chartered aircraft to Rajkot for final rites. At Rajkot, huge crowds waited for the flight to touch down at Hirasar airport. The family boarded the ambulance that carried the coffin out of the airport and broke down seeing waiting family and friends. Traffic was diverted, and people paid homage to the leader from the terraces and balconies of their houses. Rupani's final journey passed through Kalawad Road, Astron Chowk, Malaviya Chowk and Corporation Chowk, and stopped at the Pujit Rupani Trust, which he had formed for social work, before reaching the Ramnathpara crematorium. Rupani died on Thursday when his flight to London crashed moments after take-off in Ahmedabad, killing 241 of the 242 flyers on board. Like the bodies of most passengers on the ill-fated plane, Rupani's body could not be visually identified. His remains were identified after DNA samples from his family members were matched with DNA from the remains. Rupani was chief minister of Gujarat from Aug 2016 to Sept 2021 and was instrumental in steering the state through the post-Covid recovery phase.
