Advice emerges as a key aspect of bank customers' experience

This story was originally published on CX Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily CX Dive newsletter. More consumers are looking to their banks for advice as their overall financial health deteriorates, according to a J.D. Power report released Thursday. More than one-quarter of bank customers are 'very interested' in bank advice or guidance. That number is particularly pronounced among younger generations. More than one-third of customers under the age of 40 are currently seeking advice. Customers are most interested in short-term solutions, according to Jennifer White, senior director for banking and payments intelligence at J.D. Power. 'We see a shift in consumer thirst for content that is around short-term solutions, things like, 'Ways to help pay my bills on time?'' As consumers become more anxious about the economy, they're looking to their financial institutions for guidance, creating an opportunity for banks to build lasting relationships. Providing financial advice drives trust and in turn satisfaction, according White. 'There's many factors that influence satisfaction, but the factor that has the highest weight in driving customer satisfaction is the level of trust that a customer has in their financial institution,' she told CX Dive. Trust is driven by several key factors, including a bank's ability to resolve a customer's problem, a customer's confidence they have the account right for their situation, and a bank providing a customer support and guidance during a challenging time. Customers' thirst for short-term solutions reflect that increase in vulnerable customers, White said. More than 2 in 5 bank customers are considered financially vulnerable, meaning they have trouble paying their bills on time, are unable to cover living expenses for a minimum of six months and are seeing their credit deteriorate. The best banks don't treat guidance as an afterthought and make it available beyond branch locations, according to J.D. Power. Customers are most satisfied with retail banking advice from Bank of America, followed by U.S. Bank and Chase. 'Most of the institutions that are at the top of the list have embedded advice or guidance throughout their ecosystem,' White said. 'They're combining in-person experiences with digital engagement.' Perhaps that's offering a personal financial management tool or even a banner interruption that educates customers on scams, White said. But even if customers don't follow bank advice, the act of offering it grows customer satisfaction. 'No advice results in the lowest overall customer satisfaction,' White said. 'Advice that isn't acted on is still higher than that, but advice that is acted on is the highest.' A £10,000 investment in Standard Chartered shares 10 years ago is now worth…

Despite some operational problems, a focus on fast-growing developing regions means Standard Chartered's (LSE:STAN) shares have provided solid returns over the last decade. At £11.56 per share, the FTSE 100 bank has risen 20.3% in value from the 961.3p it traded at 10 years ago. It's an ascent that would have turned a £10,000 lump sum investment back then into a cool £12,028 today. The overall return improves further too, when adding in dividends over the last decade. Since mid-2015, dividends from the business have totalled 109.7p per share. As a consequence, a £10k investment in the bank back then would have produced a total shareholder return of £13,169, or 31.7%. That's not bad, but it's hardly a stunning result. To put that in perspective, the broader Footsie's delivered a return of 82.9% in that timeframe. Fellow emerging market bank HSBC has also delivered better returns over that time. With capital gains and dividends combined, StanChart's Asian rival's total returns stand just above 100%. As I alluded to above, the bank's suffered a number of performance-denting setbacks between 2015 and 2020. Compliance issues resulted in severe reputational damage and heavy financial penalties. It also had to heavily restructure to improve performance and beef up the balance sheet. But with these issues now in the distant past, could Standard Chartered shares deliver better returns from now on? Like any bank, the company's highly sensitive to broader economic conditions. During downturns, profits can slump as demand for financial services declines. At the same time, loan impairments can shoot through the roof. This is a significant danger for the FTSE company as the key Chinese economy splutters, causing wider problems across its Asia Pacific region. Standard Chartered sources around three-quarters of revenue from customers in this territory. Worryingly for the country's banks, China's property sector continues to soften as well. StanChart's been no stranger to substantial real estate-related writedowns in recent years. Established banks like this also face intense competition from digital banks. According to Statista, net interest income among digital-only competitors will grow at an annualised rate of 9.36% between 2025 and 2029. Having said that, Standard Chartered's enjoying its own successes in the digital realm. Its Mox and Trust platforms (in Hong Kong and Singapore, respectively) have enjoyed strong take-up following their launches in recent years. And the bank has significant resources to continue building its presence in this key growth segment. What's more, while Asian banks may suffer some discomfort in the near term, the long-term outlook for the continent remains extremely bright. As with StanChart's African and Middle East markets, there's scope for substantial profits growth as personal wealth levels climb and populations steadily increase. Today, the stock trades on a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 8.2 times. It also trades on a sub-1 price-to-earnings growth (PEG) ratio of 0.6. Such readings fail to reflect Standard Chartered's enormous growth potential, in my view. I think it's a top FTSE 100 share to consider right now. TSA Announces Big Change at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

Over the past several months the Transportation Security Administration has been rolling out new technology to screen passengers before their travels. One of the busiest airports in the United States will be seeing that upgrade this month. On June 5 the TSA announced a new security checkpoint located at the south end of the terminal on the arrivals level at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The new checkpoint is designed to screen up to 750 passengers per hour. "It will be open daily 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. This is the first checkpoint on the baggage claim level as part of innovative designs in a space constrained terminal. This will provide a new option for travelers for convenience as well as additional queuing and re-composure space to improve the customer experience," the TSA said in a statement. The security administration revealed what passengers can expect when encountering the latest version of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2). "A TSA officer will scan the passenger's photo identification and a camera will capture a real-time photo of the passenger. CAT-2 uses facial matching technology to compare the features on the photo ID against the in-person, real-time photo," the TSA said. "Once the unit confirms a match, a TSA officer verifies it and the traveler can proceed to security screening. TSA officers can perform additional passenger verification if needed. Through a secure Internet connection, the units also verify that an individual is ticketed for air travel, negating the need to show a boarding pass." The TSA also revealed photos captured by the new equipment are "never stored or used for any other purpose than immediate identity verification." Travelers who don't want to participate in the facial matching process have the option to opt Announces Big Change at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 6, 2025
