Malaysia Masters 2025: Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing take down Olympic queen Chen Qing Chen again

Malay Mail21-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — The national women's doubles pair, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing once again stole the spotlight when they recorded a stylish victory over 2024 Paris Olympic champion, Chen Qing Chen who teamed up with Wang Ting Ge of China to advance to the second round of the Malaysia Masters 2025 at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, yesterday.
The first round yesterday saw Pei Kee-Mei Xing, currently ranked 24th in the world, display an energetic performance to defeat the Chinese pair 21-19, 21-19 in 53 minutes, their second victory over the same pair after the 2025 German Open in February.
'This time, we have higher expectations. At the beginning of the match, we started well, but then we started making some mistakes and feeling nervous. However, today, we managed to overcome all that.
'We were a bit nervous too because she (Qing Chen) is still an Olympic champion and very experienced but we really appreciate the opportunity to play against them,' Mei Xing told reporters here yesterday.
Asked about the match against the seventh seeds of the tournament, Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian of China in the second round following their victory over national representatives Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting (21-11, 17-21, 21-13), Mei Xing said yesterday's victory was the best tonic to face tomorrow's challenge.
Meanwhile, national men's doubles, Muhammad Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian defeated eighth seeds Kittinupong Kedren-Decaphol Puavaranukroh of Thailand, 21-15, 21-18 in the first-round action, which lasted 40 minutes.
It was their first win after six first-round losses since the China Open in September last year, and it was a boost for Muhammad Haikal, who had previously suffered a thigh muscle injury since last December.
'Of course, I am very happy, but there is still much to improve. The action at home gave us extra motivation. I feel comfortable after returning from injury, but after playing for a long time I start to feel tired because this is my first tournament since returning,' he said.
In another action, national men's doubles pair Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong also advanced to the second round after defeating Taiwan's Chiang Chien Wei-Wu Hsuan Yi 21-14, 21-16.
However, luck was not on the side of the national professional men's pair, Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, when they lost to Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han from Taiwan, 19-21,15-21. — Bernama

Bergson equals Indra Putra's record in JDT's 5-3 win over Negeri Sembilan

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) striker Bergson da Silva equalled national football legend Indra Putra Mahayuddin's record as the all-time top scorer in the Malaysian Super League with 106 goals, after scoring in extra-time to help JDT bounce back to defeat Negeri Sembilan FC 5-3 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium tonight. The visiting team began the match aggressively as they shocked the defending champions in the eighth minute through Joseph Esso, who cleverly netted a pass from Ameyaw Alexander Agyakwa. Four minutes later, Agyakwa again produced an assist when his free-kick was well received by Jovan Motika to put Negeri Sembilan comfortably ahead at 2-0. JDT then made a slight change by bringing on winger Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi in the 29th minute, and it paid off as his corner-kick in the 38th minute was headed home by Jon Irazabal. Three minutes later, Jaoa Figueiredo made it 2-2, reviving the defending champions' spirit heading into the break. In the second half, JDT pressed on and took the lead in the 57th minute through Irazabal, who completed a pass from Hector Hevel. Before the visitors could regroup, Arif Aiman fired a powerful shot one minute later to extend the lead to 4-2. However, Negeri Sembilan refused to relent and Motika again found a touch of goal in the 60th minute, to close the gap.. JDT substitute striker Bergson put the icing on the cake in extra time with a scissor kick, etching his name in Super League history. In other matches of the night, Selangor defeated DPMM FC 3-0 while Kelantan Red Warriors drew 1-1 against Imigresen FC. — Bernama

Is FOMO fuelling the rise of pickleball?

Pickleball, a fast-paced hybrid of tennis, badminton and table tennis, has exploded in popularity across the country. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : If you're an avid social media user, chances are you've come across videos of friends, or even celebrities, playing pickleball – the paddle sport that combines elements of ping-pong, badminton and tennis. Of late, the popularity of this activity has been skyrocketing, and even those who previously had little interest in sports have seemingly become ardent players. Could the psychological phenomenon known as FOMO – or 'fear of missing out' – be at work here? Psychologist Norezzati Hanafiah believes that FOMO – often associated with social pressure or unhealthy lifestyle habits – can actually be used positively, such as by encouraging individuals to lead more active lifestyles. From a psychological perspective, this drive is closely tied to the human instinct to be accepted within a social group, which is essential for emotional well-being. As such, in the context of pickleball or other light sports, FOMO can become a positive motivator. 'One might start as a spectator, then develop an interest in trying it out, which can become a turning point towards adopting a healthier lifestyle. If handled properly, FOMO can spark healthy habits that spread widely within a community,' she said. Norezzati Hanafiah. Beyond physical benefits, pickleball also contributes to mental health through its relaxed and fun social aspects — enhancing mood, providing ongoing motivation, and offering social therapy for those dealing with work stress or burnout. According to Norezzati, the approach to health promotion is evolving, with a greater focus on the 'fun-first' concept, as seen in pickleball. This makes physical activities more enjoyable and effective than approaches that emphasise aesthetics or weight loss. 'When an activity is seen as fun rather than a burden, people are more likely to stick with it. This makes a healthy lifestyle something to enjoy rather than something one is forced into,' she stressed. Norezzati added that social media plays a major role in spreading the pickleball trend, and creating a sense of normalisation that encourages more people to try the sport without feeling embarrassed or self-conscious.
